The Edgar football team won its ninth state championship this past Thursday, shutting out Potosi/Cassville 19-0 in the WIAA Division 7 State Championship. Butt was a part of that balanced team effort in the defensive battle. Offensively the junior running back led Edgar with 45 yards on the ground and a score. Butt added a receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter. On the defensive side, he had four tackles for the Wildcats
Where were you when Christian Collins ran wild at the WIAA State Football Championships? The senior running back, and Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch award winner on WSN, put on a historic performance as Notre Dame bested Catholic Memorial 49-28 in the WIAA Division 3 State Championship game. Collins rushed the 39 times for 408 yards and five touchdowns in the victory, adding one punt return for ten yards. Collins set the record for rushing yards in the state championships, regardless of division, and tied the all-divisions record with five touchdowns. His 408 yards on the ground tied Melvin Gordon's record while at Wisconsin for the Camp Randall rushing record. Collins was named the State Finals MVP on WisSports.net.
If you didn't know LaMont Hamilton the football player before Thursday evening, there's no chance you came out of the Division 4 state championship game without doing so. One of the better multi-sport athletes in the state, Hamilton showed out as Racine St. Catherine's held off Baldwin-Woodville 26-22. The junior wideout/defensive back had four catches for 155 yards and three touchdowns on the day, added 8 rushes for 33 yards, and completed a pass for 28 yards. If that wasn't enough, Hamilton added two tackles on defense, a punt return for four yards, and an 83-yard kickoff return for his fourth touchdown of the day. For the game, he had 275 all-purpose yards, not including his 28-yard pass. He set records for the State Championships in Division 4 in most receiving yards and the longest kickoff return in his incredible performance.
Bay Port finally got over the hump and won a state championship game this past Friday at Camp Randall. Viewed as one of, if not the, best football program not to win a championship in the state, Moon did his best to change that storyline. The junior running back started the game off with a bang, taking the first offensive snap 80 yards for a touchdown. Moon finished with 24 carries for 241 yards and three touchdowns for the game, adding touchdown runs of 4 and 67 yards. Moon averaged a touch over ten yards per carry as Bay Port held off Muskego 25-18 to win the WIAA Division 1 State Championship.
Schaumberg was a key reason why the Lomira football team took home its very first state title, playing in its first state championship against Grantsburg. The senior running back took on a work horse load of carries out of the backfield, rushing 29 of the 39 times for the Lions. He took turned those 29 carries into 216 yards on the ground and three scores. Defensively Schaumberg added two tackles and a tackle for loss. Schaumberg scored the final touchdown of the game for Lions as they took home the 26-19 victory in the Division 6 State Championship.
Slinger is a state champion in football for the second time in the school's history after the Owls squeaked out a 31-30 win over Rice Lake in the WIAA Division 2 State Championship game. Thiede was calm, cool, and collected as he orchestrated the Slinger offense from his quarterback position. The senior signal caller completed 12 of 15 passes on the day for 181 yards and a touchdown. Thiede added a team-high 48 yards and two touchdowns on the ground on eleven rushing attempts. Thiede led the efficient Slinger offense to points on five of its seven possessions, with one of the non-scoring possessions ending in kneel downs to close the game out.
Tubbs capped off his prep career by leading Stratford to its tenth WIAA State Championship in school history, something no other team has accomplished in the state. The senior quarterback effected the game with both his arm and his legs in the 21-6 victory over Wrightstown in the Division 5 State Title game. Tubbs was five of five passing for 31 yards and a touchdown. He carried the ball 15 times for 94 yards and another score. Defensively Tubbs added four tackles as the Tigers won a third straight state title, even with moving up a division to D5 due to the WIAA Tournament Performance Factor.
