Opening Week Boys Basketball Highlights

Every week, we're going to update an article with the top highlights, scoring outputs, record breaking performances, and more in boys basketball.

Below are some of the top moments, statistical nights, and more from the opening week of the boys basketball season.

Opening Night, November 26

Loyal 40, Almond-Bancroft 39
As you can see from the video above, this matchup between two of the top teams in Division 5 was a good one. Junior Bryce Deegan knocked home this tough game-winner for Loyal in what was the game of the night.

Sturgeon Bay 87, Chilton 56
Senior Jackson Starr got his final prep hoops season off to a hot start. The 6-3 forward scored a game high 33 points, which also was a career high for Starr.

Saint Thomas More 87, Messmer 76
Delvito Velzquez had a great start to his sophomore season, going for 29 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for Messmer despite the loss. He made six three point shots in the win.

For Saint Thomas More, Omar Fofana had 26 points and 11 rebounds while Kenari Parr added 25 points and 9 rebounds.

Hustisford 57, Rio 47
Caleb Peplinski had a monster night for Hustisford, going for 29 points and 20 rebounds in his first game of his senior year. He went 11 of 14 from the field.

Golda Meir 97, Brown Deer 90
The trio of Ameer Anderson, Kaleb Colbert, and Ahmir Woods helped lead the high scoring Golda Meir offense in game 1. Anderson scored a team high 32 points, while Colbert added 25 and Woods 14 in the win.

Catholic Central 70, University Lake/Trinity 30
Sophomore Sam Fait had a great debut in his second year on varsity. The 6-2 guard poured in a career high 35 points in the victory.

Wauwatosa West 76, Waukesha South 67
Jalen Brown had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists in his sophomore season debut with the Trojans. Senior guard Jake Hansesn had 20 points, and 4 rebounds while junior Matthew Kloskey added 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 steals.

Royall 72, Ithaca 38
Royall started its season off with a bang upending Ithaca 72-38. Senior lead guard Carter Uppena had a game high 30 points for the Panthers on 11 of 17 shooting, adding 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Racine St. Catherine's 68, Burlington 54
Less than a week after winning a state championship on the gridiron, St. Cats took home an opening night victory. LaMont Hamilton, who amassed over 200 all-purpose yards in that game scored a game high 39 points for the Angels.

Wisconsin Dells 84, Portage 62
The Dells got an opening night win without its top player back in Raphael Berje. A trio of players scored over 20 points in the Chieftains in Isaiah Hanna-Funmaker, 28 points; Brady Young, 25 points; and Jared Ward, 24 points.

Waterford 68, New Berlin Eisenhower 57
Caden Gustafson put together a herculean effort in the second half for Waterford, scoring 33 of his game-high 39 points to will the Wolverines to a victory.

Sheboygan Lutheran 67, Cedar Grove-Belgium 64
The top seed in Division 5 had an opening night test in its 3-point victory over Cedar Grove-Belgium. Brenne Hackbart, Andrew Krueger, Marion Boyland, and Zach Leonhard scored in double figures as head coach Nick Verhagen won his 250th game while coaching the crusaders.

Cumberland 68, Southwestern Piasa Birds (IL) 46
Wyoming commit Gavin Gores had a great first game for Cumberland as they competed in the Kevin Brown Memorial Tournament of Champions. The 6-10 froward had 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Westfield 77, Princeton/Green Lake 50
Westfield junior Austin Lyon scored a career high 38 points in the lopsided win. He added four rebounds and five assists.

Mount Horeb 91, River Valley 56
Junior wing Josh Manchester proved why he's one of the best scorers in the state in the Vikings opening season victory. The 6-3 Division I college recruit scored 32 points on the night, putting him 32 points shy of the school's all-time scoring lead.

Saint Mary's Springs 63, New Holstein 61
Emmitt Huhn scored the game-winner for Springs, which you can see at the clip above. He finished with a team high 14 points for the Ledgers. 

Freshman Debuts

Owen Birschbach, New Holstein
Birschbach led the Huskies in scoring with 27 points despite losing 63-61 to Saint Mary's Springs on a buzzer-beating game-winner.

Thomas Freeman, Belmont
Freeman, a 6-3 forward with the Braves had a great debut despite a 79-70 loss to Iowa-Grant. Freeman scored 26 points on 8 of 13 shooting, going 10 of 13 from the free throw line. He added 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks.

Jase Navis, Mauston
Navis had a stellar varsity debut in his freshman season with Mauston, who took down Westby 69-58 on opening night. The 6-4 forward scored a game high 30 points in the win.

November 27

Xavier 90, Winneconne 59
Winneconne had a tough second game falling to a very good Xavier team. Junior guard Park Ingles had a game high 30 points in defeat however.

November 29

Port Edwards 59, Nekoosa 40
Port Edwards began its season with a good win over Nekoosa playing in the Cranberry Classic at Assumption. Senior wing Brynden Beck scored a game high 30 points in the win. He surpassed 1,000 points in his career with that output.

Wausau East 84, Eau Claire North 60
Wausau East was led by its stellar senior trio in an opening season win at the Eau Claire North Thanksgiving Classic. Big man Charlie Cayley had 13 points, 20 rebounds, 6 assists. Wing Jesse Napgezek had 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists and Jaydan Garrett added 18 points and 4 assists.

Mosinee 57, New London 47
Brayden Reinke had a great start to his sophomore season for Mosinee, going for a productive double-double. He finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds.

Kewaskum 102, Sheboygan South 74
Kewaskum had a bang of a start to its 2024-25 season, crossing the 100-point threshold to get things going. UW-Parkside commit Zach Behn led all scorers with 33 points while junior guards Charlie Gambino and Chase Cook added 26 and 20 points respectively.

Marshall 77, Fall River 69
Marshall begins the 2024-25 season with high expectations in Division 4 and got tested in its first game. Senior lead guard Kenyon Miggins led all scorers with 30 points.

Saturday, November 30

Oregon 74, Stoughton 73
A game of the night nominee, this definitely had the best ending of any game as Vaughn Karvala knocked down the game winner in the video above to give Oregon the win. The top 2026 prospect had 26 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks in the game for the Panthers. Stoughton got 36 points from junior Jacob Hibner.

Brookfield Central 64, New Berlin Eisenhower 61
Anthony Rise of Brookfield Central had a big day for the Lancers, competing at the Catholic Memorial Autism Classic. The NCAA Division II Hawaii-Hilo commit poured in a game-high 32 points and added seven rebounds.

Menomonee Falls 102, Carmen Northwest 99
A wild shootout at Menomonee Falls on the opening weekend of hoops is exactly what we got in this one. For Falls, senior Carter Patti had a team high 31 points. Trey Frye added 20 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds while Jasper Warren had 11 points and 16 rebounds. For Carmen, Javante Edwards had 54 points which is the top mark for anyone in the state thus far.

Freedom 70, Slinger 55
Sophomore sensation Donovan Davis had himself a great opening game to his year. The Division I recruit had 36 points, shooting 14 of 21 from the field. He added 17 rebounds and four steals.

Wauwatosa West 103, Mukwonago 75
The Trojans finished out their opening week with a second straight impressive win. Junior Matthew Kloskey poured in a career high 38 points on 16 of 18 shooting, adding eight rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Senior Jake Hansen crossed the 1,000 point mark as he added 15 points.

Peshtigo 73, Crivitz 70
Peshtigo outscored Crivitz 7-4 in overtime to win this one, though Kade Thoma did everything he could for Crivitz to secure the win. The junior post put together an emphatic double-double with 30 points and 21 rebounds.

Lomira 77, Kettle Moraine Lutheran 68
Lomira got win number one with new head coach Dan Domask. Junior post had a big night, scoring 30 points while adding 17 rebounds and four assists.

Kewaskum 76, Port Washington 72
A day after dropping 33 points, Kewaskum senior Zach Behn scored 43 in the Indians tight victory. He's over 1,200 for his career with at least 22 more games left.

Germantown 89, Sun Prairie West 82
In what might have been the game of the weekend, Germantown needed three overtimes to outlast Sun Prairie West for an opening season victory. Junior Cahlil Jones was exceptional for Germantown, scoring a game high 37 points while adding 10 rebounds.

Lake Mills 74, West De Pere 67
One of the top matchups of the weekend resulted in one of the best performances as well for Lake Mills. Senior and Minnesota State-Mankato commit AJ Bender poured in a career high 43 points for the L-Cats.

Shawano 81, Clintonville 58
Logan Sipple started out his senior year well for Shawano, scoring 31 points in the Hawks first win of the season. It came four days after he had 18 against Ashwaubenon.

Racine St. Catherine's 79, Racine Park 70
It required overtime, but St. Cats knocked off Park in the finale of the Racine Case Thanksgiving Classic. No surprise that other-worldly athlete LaMont Hamilton balled out. Four days after scoring 39 in the opening night win and nine days after scoring four touchdowns and winning a football state championship, Hamilton scored 40 points in this one.
