Counsell had a hot start to her sophomore season, leading the Whitefish Bay girls basketball team to a pair of close wins to improve to 3-0 on the year. First in a 50-45 win over Appleton East, the 5-7 guard had a game-high 20 points along with six rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Counsell followed that up with 19 points, five assists, and three rebounds in a 64-63 win over Waunakee.
Huhn had an exciting start to his senior year recording a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the Ledger's opening 63-61 win over New Holstein. The 6-7 post added a steal and three blocks in the win. The double-double won't be what is remembered from this one however. With three seconds left, Huhn dropped into the post from the opposite block, received a post entry pass, and put in a game-winning layup as the clock expired, giving Springs an opening night victory.
Fireworks is the best way to describe Oregon's first game of the season, and Karvala provided them. Trailing Stoughton 73-71, Karvala caught a pass in transition, pulled up from behind the arc, and knocked down a game-winning three point shot to secure a win for the Panthers. The high level Division I recruit is one of the best juniors in the state and a bonafide game changer. On top of the game-winner, Karvala finished with 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four blocks.
Hustisford got a 51-47 opening night win over Rio as Peplinski basically put the team on his back en route to the victory. The 6-4 senior forward recorded a 20-20 game and had a great all around performance for the Falcons. Peplinski had 29 points and 20 rebounds in the game, adding two assists, two steals, and a block. He was 11 of 14 from the field and went 6 of 11 from the free throw line.
Waldrop was excellent in Notre Dame's second game of the season, pitting two state tournament teams from last year against each other, having played Hartford. The junior forward poured in a career high 31 points in the Triton's 87-65 win over Hartford. Waldrop currently holds an NCAA Division II offer from Grand Valley State and with the graduation of the talented 2024 class at Notre Dame, she's stepping into a much bigger role with regards to playmaking.
