2023-24 Recap
Pewaukee (29-1 overall) went undefeated in the Woodland West and captured its first WIAA State Title in program history, defeating three-time defending Division 2 state champion Notre Dame, 60-52, in the D2 state championship game. Wisconsin Lutheran (17-8) finished second, going 9-3, followed by Pius XI Catholic (19-8, 8-4), and New Berlin Eisenhower (15-10, 7-5). Rounding out the league standings were Greendale (11-15, 3-9), New Berlin West (9-17, 3-9), and West Allis Central (2-23, 0-12).

Players to Watch
Georgia Acampanado, sr., Pius XI Catholic – Acampanado, a 5-7 guard, was voted first-team all-conference last season. The NCAA Division II Kentucky Wesleyan recruit averaged 13.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 2.2 steals per contest for the Lady Popes. Georgia has compiled over 900 points, 650 rebounds, 300 assists, and 250 steals in her career.
Tatiyana Edwards, jr., Greendale – Edwards, a 5-10 forward, tallied 9.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game as a sophomore for the Panthers.
Kenley Frey, sr., Wisconsin Lutheran – Frey, a 5-5 guard, was voted first-team all-Woodland West as a junior. She averaged 11.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.8 steals per contest for the Vikings. Kenley was 27-for-78 from behind the arc.
Giselle Janowski, jr., Pewaukee – Janowski, a 5-9 guard, received first-team all-Woodland West and WBCA all-state as a freshman and sophomore. The Wisconsin recruit tallied 15 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game and shot 35-for-96 on three-pointers. Giselle entered her junior year with 886 points, 270 rebounds, 188 assists, and 113 steals. She has helped Pewaukee to a 57-3 record with two state tournament appearances (state runner-up in 2023).
Megan McDowell, sr., New Berlin Eisenhower – McDowell, a 5-11 wing/forward, received second-team all-league last season, averaging 10.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 2.1 steals, and 2.0 blocks per contest.
Julia McRae, jr., New Berlin West – McRae, a 5-7 guard, averaged 10.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.8 steals per contest as a sophomore for the Vikings.
Addison Miranda, sr., Pius XI Catholic – Miranda, a 5-8 guard, earned second-team all-Woodland West last season, tallying 12.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. The NCAA Division II William Jewell College recruit made 81 of 206 (39.3%) from 3-point land. Addison has helped the Lady Popes to a 68-15 record.
Kaelyn Nommensen, soph., Wisconsin Lutheran – Nommensen, 5-11 guard, received second-team all-league in her debut season. She tallied 11.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.
Kennedy Retherford, sr., Pewaukee – Retherford, a 5-9 guard, contributed 7.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per contest for the Division 2 state champions. The NCAA Division II Truman State recruit has helped Pewaukee to an 83-7 record with three trips to state that resulted in one WIAA state title and two state runner-up finishes.
Anna Terrian, sr., Pewaukee – Terrain, a 5-9 guard, averaged 9.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game as a junior, earning first-team all-conference and honorable mention WBCA all-state. The Michigan State recruit shot 44-for-114 (38.6%) behind the arc. Anna has just over 800 career points and helped Pewaukee to an 83-7 record with three trips to state that resulted in one WIAA state title and two state runner-up finishes.
Amy Terrian, sr., Pewaukee – Terrain, a 5-9 guard, has been selected first-team all-Woodland West and WBCA all-state all three years, including being voted as the league’s player of the year last season. The Michigan State recruit averaged 18.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. Amy shot 101-for-193 (52.3%) from 3-point land, the third-most 3-pointers made in the state last season. She entered the year with 1,424 points, 345 rebounds, 317 assists, and 206 steals, helping lead Pewaukee to an 83-7 record with three trips to state that resulted in one WIAA state title and two state runner-up finishes.
Tess Wiczek, sr., Pius XI Catholic – Wiczek, a 5-7 guard, averaged 13.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game last season en route to being named first-team all-Woodland West and honorable mention WBCA all-state. Tess shot 57-for-149 on three-pointers. The NCAA Division I Lipscomb University recruit has over 900 points, 400 rebounds, 350 assists, and 200 steals in her career. Wiczek has helped lead the Lady Popes to a 68-15 record.
2024-25 Team Previews
1) Pewaukee claimed at least a share of the last three Woodland West titles and is the clear favorite in 2024-25, entering the year with a 29-game winning streak in the conference. The Pirates return the bulk of their roster from last year’s team which went undefeated in the conference and captured the Division 2 state championship, ending the season with a 29-1 record. Seventh-year head coach Jim Reuter, 143-24 record, told WSN that they are fortunate to have players with a lot of varsity experience, very high basketball IQs, and a variety of ways to score the basketball. “Playing uptempo, aggressive, and fast-paced will be our strengths.” Coach Reuter explained that they play unselfishly, move the ball well, and have demonstrated a culture of leadership and high expectations. Michigan State recruit Amy Terrian, reigning Woodland West Player of the Year, and Wisconsin recruit Giselle Janowski headline the roster for the Pirates. Other top returnees include Anna Terrian, a Michigan State recruit, and Kennedy Retherford, a D-II Truman State recruit. Pewaukee posted non-league wins over Arrowhead and Kimberly last season; the Pirates' only loss last year was against Nazareth Academy (IL). Pewaukee opened the season with wins over Notre Dame and Hortonville pushing its winning streak to 17 games, the longest active streak in the state. The Pirates have other notable non-league games versus Homestead (Dec. 21), Arrowhead (Jan. 11), Kimberly (Feb. 1), and Laconia (Feb. 22). Pewaukee, which took home the program’s first gold ball last season, is the top-ranked team in the Division 1 WSN Preseason Rankings.

2) Pius XI Catholic returns four starters from last year’s team which took third (8-4) in the conference and advanced to a Division 2 sectional semifinal, ending the season with a 19-8 record. WBCA Hall of Fame head coach Scott Herrick, who has a 483-130 career record, has a 442-120 record in 21 years as the Lady Popes’ leader, including guiding them to a pair of WIAA state championships. Coach Herrick told WisSports.net that their strengths include experience, chemistry, and athleticism. Tess Wiczek, an NCAA Division I Lipscomb recruit and the team’s leading scorer last season, highlights the Lady Popes’ roster. Georgia Acompanado, a D-II Kentucky Wesleyan recruit, and Addison Miranda, a D-II William Jewell recruit, join Wiczek as top returnees. The Lady Popes have notable non-league games remaining against Brookfield East (Dec. 17), Hartford (Dec. 27 at Hartford Holiday Shootout), and Oak Creek (Feb. 22). Pius XI Catholic opens league play versus New Berlin Eisenhower on December 3. The Lady Popes’ first meeting against Pewaukee isn’t until January 16. Pius XI Catholic is ranked No. 6 in the WSN Preseason Rankings for Division 2.

3) Wisconsin Lutheran returns four starters from last year’s team which finished second (9-3) in the Woodland West and 17-8 overall, falling to state qualifier Wauwatosa East in a D2 regional final. Randall Strutz, who has a 64-80 record in six years at the helm, told WSN that their strengths include outside shooting, guard play, athleticism, and overall depth. “Some areas of focus this year will be consistent levels in our effort and resiliency.” Kenly Frey and Kaelyn Nommensen, the team’s top two scorers last season, highlight the Vikings’ roster. They also return Beth Langebartels and Reese Grudzielanek as starters. The Vikings have notable non-league contests remaining against Hartford (Dec. 7), Waukesha West (Dec. 17), Germantown (Jan. 18), and The Prairie School (Jan. 21). Wisconsin Lutheran opens league play at Pewaukee on December 3.

4) New Berlin Eisenhower brings back four starters from its 2023-24 team which went 7-5 in the Woodland West and 15-10 overall. WBCA Hall of Fame head coach Joel Claassen, who has a 703-210 record in 37 years as a head coach, is 50-26 in three years as the Lions’ leader. Coach Claassen told WSN that their experience, depth, and transition game are strengths while size is a weakness. Megan McDowell, second on the team in scoring and rebounding last season, will take on a leading role. Another top returnee for the Lions is Autumn Tevz, the team leader in assists last season. Alina Siodlarz and Maya Johansen also return as starters for the Lions. New Berlin Eisenhower is ranked No. 10 in the Division 2 WisSports.net Preseason Rankings.

5) New Berlin West welcomes back three starters from its 2023-24 squad that finished 3-9 in the Woodland West and 9-17 overall. First-year head coach Marcus Greben, who previously served as the JV coach of the program, told WSN the team is senior-driven with five seniors on the roster. “We are well-positioned to build a successful team this year,” he added. Isabelle Freisleben and Julia McRae, who scored in double figures last season, highlight the Vikings squad. Genevieve Schneider rounds out the group of returning starters.

6) Greendale brings back all of its key players from last year’s team which went 3-9 in the league and 11-15 overall. The Panthers will need to adjust to a new head coach as Stacy Sinks takes over the program. They had a balanced scoring attack last season with four players netting at least nine points per game: Tatiyana Edwards, Peyton Yoder, Giselle Paszkiewicz, and Greta Dombrowski.
