Wisconsin Valley Girls Basketball Preview

2023-24 Recap

Marshfield (17-8 overall) and Stevens Point (18-8) shared the Wisconsin Valley title, posting 11-1 records after splitting their meetings. Wausau West (9-15, 7-5) took third, followed by Wisconsin Rapids (9-16, 6-6). Rounding out the conference standings were Merrill (14-12, 5-7), Wausau East (7-17, 2-10), and D.C. Everest (3-22, 0-12).

Players to Watch

Ayla Christiansen, sr., Wausau West – Christiansen, a 5-9 wing, averaged 11.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.6 steals per game, earning second-team all-WVC last season. Ayla shot 31-for-81 from behind the arc. 

Kirsten Hall, sr., D.C. Everest – Hall, a 5-10 wing/forward, received second-team all-WVC last season, averaging 12.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game for the Evergreens. Kirsten also connected on 34 three-pointers. 

McKenzie Holm, sr., Marshfield – Holm, a 5-5 guard, will take on an expanded role after averaging 5.0 points and 1.9 assists per contest last season for the Tigers. 

Zaida Kolbeck, sr., Marshfield – Kolbeck, a 5-4 point guard, tallied 9.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.2 steals per game last season, earning second-team all-conference. Zaida shot 35-for-95 on three-pointers. 

Harper Mead, sr., Wausau West – Mead, a 6-0 forward, contributed 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season for the Warriors. 

Kristin Radtke, sr., Wisconsin Rapids – Radtka, a 5-9 guard, was voted first-team all-WVC last season, averaging 12 points per game for the Red Raiders. 

Jada Seubert, soph., Stevens Point – Seubert, a 5-9 guard, was named Wisconsin Valley Player of the Year and honorable mention WBCA all-state as a freshman. The Division I prospect averaged 19.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 4.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game with 41 three-pointers made for the Panthers. 

Ellie Strong, jr., Stevens Point – Strong, a 5-5 guard, received second-team all-league last season, averaging 7.2 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.0 steals per contest for the Panthers. 

Lindsey Weiler, sr., Stevens Point – Weiler, a 6-0 forward, contributed 8.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for the Panthers last season.  

2024-25 Team Previews 

1) Stevens Point has claimed at least a share of the last two Wisconsin Valley championships and is the favorite in 2024-25. The Panthers return four starters from last year’s team which finished 11-1 in the conference and 18-8 overall. Second-year head coach Janel McCarville told WSN that they are very active and aggressive on defense which will allow them to get out in transition as often as possible. “Offensively we will need to protect the ball - limit turnovers and make the most out of every possession.” Coach McCarville explained that they are more experienced and battle-tested this year which will pay off against strong opponents. Division I prospect Jada Seubert, the reigning WVC Player of the Year, headlines the Panthers’ lineup. Other top returnees are Lindsey Weiler and Ellie Strong. Stevens Point begins conference play at Wausau West on December 13.

2) Marshfield will reload after three starters graduated from last year’s team, which claimed a share of the Wisconsin Valley title and went 17-8 overall. Heidi Michaelis is in her second stint as the Tigers' head coach. She compiled a 305-103 record in 17 years as their leader before stepping down in 2018.  Zaida Kolbeck, second on the team in scoring last season, will move into a featured role for the Tigers. Emma Ridgway and McKenzie Holm also return as starters. Marshfield opens WVC play at home against Wisconsin Rapids on December 10. The Tigers’ first meeting against Stevens Point isn’t until January 10.

3) Wausau West returns several contributors from its 2023-24 squad which finished third (7-5) in the WVC and 9-15 overall. Ayla Christensen, second on the team in scoring last season, will move into a leading role this season. Other top returning players for the Warriors include Harper Mead and Paige Anderson. Wausau West opens Wisconsin Valley play at Merrill on December 10.

4) Wisconsin Rapids brings back its top three scorers from last year’s team which finished 6-6 in the WVC and 9-16 overall. Kristin Radtke, the team’s leading scorer last season, highlights the Red Raiders' lineup. Sydney Holberg and Gabby Neilitz also return as double-digit scorers. Wisconsin Rapids’ first league contest is at Marshfield on December 10.

5) D.C. Everest will look to take a step forward this season with the return of three starters from last year’s team which went winless in the league and 3-22 overall. The Evergreens had a coaching change in the offseason, Lauren Bullis, a 2013 D.C. Everest graduate, was hired to lead the program. Bullis, who spent one season as the head coach at Spencer (2018-19), told WSN that veteran leadership and experience are strengths. Kirsten Hall, the team leader in nearly every statistical category last season, highlights the Evergreens’ roster.

6) Merrill graduated its top two scorers from last year’s team which went 5-7 in the Wisconsin Valley and 14-12 overall. Grace Reimann and Kaela Clerveaux lead the Bluejays’ returning group.
