Wisconsin Sports Network is pleased to showcase the WSN High School Basketball Awards.
The pre-season list has been trimmed down to 15 semi-finalists, with five finalists chosen after the week of the WIAA regionals. Winners are announced the week of the WIAA State Tournament.
Listed alphabetically by last name
Jamarion Batemon, Milwaukee Academy of Science
Batemon is regarded as one of the top shooters not only in the state, but the entire country in high school basketball. One of the top players regardless of position in the state, the 6-4 guard had connected on 42% of the shots he's taken from the outside, making 42 total in 14 games. The Novas' schedule has been anything but easy this year, making Batemon's numbers even more impressive. For the season he's averaging 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. Batemon was named one of six finalists for the Mr. Basketball award in Wisconsin and has committed play at Iowa State next season.
Chris Davis Jr., Sun Prairie East
Davis Jr. has been the most prolific scorer in the state the past two seasons, having averaged over 40 points per game through both campaigns. This season he's averaged 40.3 points per game while making 53 shots from beyond the arc at a 39.6% clip. Davis can score almost at will off the dribble as he's deadly in one-on-one situations. He also averaged 7.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 2.2 steals per game for the Cardinals. Davis is head to NCAA Division I Arkansas State next season, but beforehand, will likely finish as one of the top ten scorers in state history.
Charlie Gierl, Medford
Gierl has been the catalyst for a Medford team that recently took over sole possession of first place in the Great Northern conference. He's upped his scoring production to 19.6 points per game and has made 45 three-point shots in 15 games, shooting it at a 46.4% succession rate. Gierl also averages 6.6 rebounds for the Raiders. He's knocked down six three-point shots in three games this season already.
Tyler Haney, Sun Prairie West
Haney has grown into his role as primary scorer for the Wolves and is nearing the 1,000 point mark for his career this season, sitting just 69 points short. Though he plays primarily point guard, the 6-1 Haney has become one of the better scorers the tough Big Eight conference. He's currently averaging 22.2 points per game while shooting 43% from three. Haney has made 50 three-point baskets over the course of 14 games while also averaging 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Jake Hansen, Wauwatosa West
It feels as if Hansen was born to shoot a basketball, as he's become one of the better shooters in the state. A Division 1 prospect at just 6-1, Hansen's prep and quick release allow him to get his shot off over many defenders that have a height or size advantage. This season for the Trojans, he is averaging 20.5 points per game and has made 41 threes on the season at a 35% clip. Over his four-year varsity tenure Hansen has made 202 three-point shots in 92 career games.
Aiden Hawkinson, Waupun
Hawkinson has grown his scoring and playmaking ability year after year over the past four seasons, and from junior to senior year, he's taken a major leap. The 6-2 combo guard is averaging 27.6 points per game for a Waupun team that is 11-3 on the year. He scores from anywhere on the court, including the perimeter where he's made 50 three-point shots at a 37% rate in 14 games. He's made 222 from deep in 85 career games. Hawkinson's game is well-rounded however as he also averages 7.0 points, 2.1 assists, and 3.5 steals per game.
Myles Herro, Whitnall
Herro is one of the top unsigned seniors in the state, holding Division 1 offers from Cal Poly and Southern Illinois. A four-year varsity performer, Herro has grown into the primary scorer during his senior campaign. At 6-3, he is a point guard first in many respects but does have the ability to knock down shots as well. Herro is averaging 21.5 points per game and has connected on 28 threes this season. He also is averaging 6.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 2.3 steals per game.
Brooks Hinson, Marshfield
Hinson had to shoulder a much bigger scoring load earlier in the year as junior big man Chris Pohl was unavailable for the Tigers. That did not effect his efficiency from the perimeter. At 6-2, Hinson is a strong off-ball guard with a quick trigger that can get his shot up from almost anywhere on the court. This season he's averaging 17.0 points per game and is shooting 47.4% from three, making 45 total. Hinson is committed to play at NCAA Division II Northern Michigan next season.
Agape Keys Jr., Milwaukee Academy of Science
Keys is the third and sometimes fourth scoring option on arguably the most talented offensive team in the entire state. The 6-4 guard can handle the point off the point, but like his teammate Jamarion Batemon, can knock down shots at a high rate. He's averaging 17.4 points per game and has made 36 three-point shots in a 14 games at a 43% success rate. He is also averaging 3.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Keys Jr. is a member of the 1,000 point club and is unsigned as of this moment.
Andrew Krueger, Sheboygan Lutheran
Krueger may not put up the eye-popping numbers that some on this list do, but he's good at exactly what this award is for, shooting the three-ball. Of Krueger's 179 made field goals in three seasons on varsity, 159 of those have been from beyond the arc. This season he's made 37 three-point shots in 14 games at a 43% clip. At 5-11, he can't be given an inch of space, which is difficult for opposing defenses given the Crusaders balanced offense.
Cameron Lipinski, Cochrane-Fountain City
Lipinski is another on this list that has greatly improved year after year. That is apparent as his shooting from beyond the three-point line has risen from 35.7% last year to 43.5% in his senior campaign. He's got the Pirates sitting at 13-1 on the season as he's averaging 22.4 points per game. Lipinski has also tallied 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game on the season.
Ty Mahnke, Brookfield Academy
Mahnke currently has made more three-point shots than anyone in the entire state this season. The 5-9 has buried 69 shots from deep at a 38% clip. 74% of his points have come from the perimeter as Mahnke plays on a team with plenty of length and size that sucks defenders in and allows him just one more inch of space, which he fully capitalizes on. For the year Mahnke is averaging 18.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.
Drew Murphy, Verona
Murphy is one of the better all-around players in the state and leads a Verona team that is 12-3 and tied atop the Big Eight conference standings. A great leader for the Wildcats, Drew excels in many areas of the game. He can play floor general, knock down shots, and works at the defensive end of the court. For the season, Drew is averaging 24.2 points per game. He's committed to play at NCAA Division II Northern Michigan following his senior year.
Parker Stobbe, Beaver Dam
Stobbe is one of the shorter players on this list, but that doesn't stop him from knocking down shots from deep at a high level. He's had four games with five or more made three-point shots this season and has made on average 3.4 attempts per game. For the season, Stobbe is averaging just 12.6 points but is shooting 45.5% from beyond the arc and has made 51 total three-point shots.
Ben Wetzel, Deerfield
Wetzel has Deerfield rolling, sitting at 12-4 and one game back in the Trailways-South conference. Wetzel is the leading scorer for the Demons and has done so despite his 5-11 frame. He does have good length and uses it it well enough to get his shot off against larger defenders. Wetzel is averaging 17.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 3.5 steals per game this season, showcasing his versatility in his role. From deep, he's made 51 three-point shots, doing so at a 41.% rate.
