Athlete of the Week Nominees: February 3-9

Brayden Garey, Janesville Parker

Garey was one of three individual champions for the Janesville Parker wrestling team this past weekend that took home the Big Eight conference tournament team title. The Vikings finished with 237.5 total points, finishing just ahead of Verona who had 230.5. Garey, just a sophomore advanced to the state tournament last season and wrestled in the 113-pound weight class. On Saturday, Garey won the individual conference title at 120 pounds. He recorded three pins to do so. Garey will wrestle this upcoming Saturday, February 15 at Milton High School in a Division 1 regional meet.

Reese Grindell, Webster

Grindell has been the top scorer all season for a Webster girls basketball team that improved to 19-1 on the year with two conference victories last week. In the 63-54 win over Clear Lake on Tuesday the sophomore guard filled the stat sheet with 19 points and 11 steals. She added three assists and two rebounds. Grindell then scored ten points in a 58-36 win over Luck on Thursday. Webster now sits one game ahead of Clear Lake and Shell Lake in the standings and controls its own destiny in its quest for the first conference title in well over two decades.

Maya Kovacic, Brookfield East

Kovacic led the Spartans to three wins this past week and improve to 18-3 on the season. The junior guard poured in 21 points while making 11 of 15 from the free throw line in a 56-46 win over DSHA. She added seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. The Spartans then squared off with cross-town rival Brookfield Central and came away with a 58-44 victory. Kovacic tallied 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. The Division 1 college prospect finished her week off with 17 points and 4 rebounds in a 55-45 win over ranked Verona on Saturday.

Andrew Lehman, Ladysmith

Lehman was dominant this past week, leading Ladysmith to three wins as the Lumberjacks improved to 14-5 on the year and 10-4 in the Heart O'North. The senior guard started his week off with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals in a 63-55 win over Saint Croix Falls. He followed that up by scoring a career high 41 points in a 92-55 win over Spooner. He was 8 of 17 from the three-point line and added 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. To finish his week, Lehman tallied 32 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 assists, and 2 blocks in a 73-70 win over Barron.

Roman Thompson, Kettle Moraine

Thompson and the Kettle Moraine boys basketball team continued its perfect season this past week, winning three more games to improve to 19-0 on the year. The Lasers are quite clearly on a mission and Thompson is locked in here in February. In a 66-50 win over Muskego, the NCAA Division III UW-Eau Claire commit had just nine points. From there, he owned the week. Thompson had his first 30-point game in a 74-54 win over Catholic Memorial, finishing with a career high 32 in the victory. The 6-5 senior wing then showed out in a 73-62 win over Nicolet playing in the Deer District Prep Showcase at the Fiserv Forum. Two days after setting a career high in points scored, Thompson topped that by going for 34 in the win over the ranked Knights.
