Cuba City is the WIAA State Champion for the 12th time in program history, beating St. Mary Catholic, 53-50, in the Division 4 state title game.
The Cubans, which have won the most WIAA state titles in girls' basketball history, trailed most of the first half before taking a 28-27 halftime lead.
The second half was much different, Cuba City led nearly the entire half, which had two lead changes and was tied twice.
Junior Ashley Rowe made a layup with 7:37 left, giving the Cubans a 44-42 lead, and they didn't let St. Mary Catholic get any closer than one point the rest of the way.
Cuba City shot 22-for-58 from the field, 3-for-14 from three, and 6-for-11 from the free throw line. The Cubans compiled 18 steals, scored 23 points off the turnovers, and held a 36-14 scoring advantage in the paint.
Rowe scored a team-high 15 points for the Cubans and added six rebounds and three assists.
Seniors Ella Vosberg and Olivia Olson contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively. Vosberg added 10 steals, the second-most in a D4 state tournament game. Olson, a Milwaukee recruit, chipped in three assists and three steals.
Fellow senior Dea Crist also made an impact for coach Jason Derby and the Cubans, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Cuba City finishes the year with a 25-5 record. The Cubans' 12 WIAA state titles and 18 appearances are state records.
St. Mary Catholic shot 18-for-51 from the field, 10-for-29 from deep, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Zephyrs' three-point shooting kept them in the game, making five in each half after going 1-for-14 from behind the arc in their state semifinal win over Durand-Arkansaw.
St. Mary Catholic ends the year with a 26-4 record. They finish as state runner-up for the second time in the team's third overall trip to the WIAA state tournament.
