Gavin Gores of Cumberland has been selected as the top senior Post Player as part of the WSN Senior Basketball Awards.
At 6-foot-10, Gores can play inside and out, with his back to the basket or with the ball in his hand in space. He was instrumental in leading Cumberland to a share of the Heart O'North conference title, the first for the Beavers in 53 years.
The Player of the Year in the Heart O'North, Gores is a two-time first team and one-time second team all-conference selection and was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state.
The Wyoming recruit averaged a robust 34.1 points, 14.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game for the Beavers this season and led them to a sectional final where they lost to eventual Division 4 state champion Aquinas.
In 103 games, Gores tallied 2,360 points, 1,108 rebounds, 174 assists, and 119 blocks. His 920 points this season tied for the 13th highest scoring season in state history, while the 2,360 career points lands him inside the top 20 all-time.
Head coach Brian Dutton said this about Gores:
"I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Gavin the last two years and have known him since he’s been in sixth grade. What has enabled him to get to a place to be selected for an award like post of the year is his work ethic. He’s always been a talented young man, but the last two years I have noticed a burning desire in Gavin to be the best he can be. It’s kind of a cliche, but Gavin is the first in the gym and the last to leave every day. That drive is going to serve him well in the years ahead.
Gavin had a good season scoring the ball this year, but the goal was for the team to win. Gavin led the team on and off the floor to the first conference championship for Cumberland in 53 years and the first regional championship for the school in I believe over twenty years. His defense in the late season against some of our conference’s better players was really the key to us winning."
Finalists for the award were Gores, Will Garlock of Middleton, Jaxon Moss of Racine Park, Ayden Phillips of Almond-Bancroft, and Andrew Rader of Notre Dame.
Past winners of the award include Will Hornset of De Pere (2024), Simeon Murchison of Milwaukee Hamilton (2023), JJ Paider of Neenah (2022), Cade Meyer of Monroe (2021), Grant Manke of Bangor (2020), David Skogman of Waukesha West (2019), Grant Basile of Pewaukee (2018), Owen Hamilton of Prescott (2017), Taurus Adams of Brown Deer (2016), Diamond Stone of Dominican (2015), Davante Jackson of Brown Deer (2014), Luke Fischer of Germantown (2013), and Luke Heller of D.C.
