2024 Season Recap

Cuba City (23-3 overall) placed first in the SWAL last season. Boscobel (16-5) and Mineral Point (21-4) tied for second. Fennimore (13-8), Iowa-Grant (14-9), Southwestern (5-15), Riverdale (4-18) and Darlington (2-19) finished out the standings. Cuba City would advance to the Division 4 State Championship game falling to Fall Creek. Fennimore was also a Sectional Semi Finalist.

Team Previews

Cuba City gets the nod for the top spot in the SWAL this season. With only two players lost to graduation and the return of five All-Conference selections (Payton Gile Sr P, Josie Kruser JR 1B, Ella Vosberg Sr SS, Addy Schauff Jr 2B, Ayla Nolan Sr OF) the Cubans are bound for a strong season and will look to go deep at the end of the season. SWAL rivals Mineral Point, Fennimore and Iowa-Grant are in their half of the sectional while Oakfield, Horicon, and Waterloo are in the other half.

Mineral Point will once again look to challenge Cuba City for the top this season. The Pointers have all five all-conference selections returning this season (Liz Hoffman Sr P, Maddy Kabat Jr CF, Jadyn Schultz Jr 2B, Ava Ingwell So RF, Eliza Ingwell Sr SS).

Fennimore looks to compete for a top spot in the SWAL this season. The Golden Eagles return all but one starter from a season ago that fell to conference champion Cuba City in the sectional semi-finals. Third year Head Coach Cassie Roach Says, “We have players ready to step up. Last year we gained a lot of experience, both physically and mentally when it comes to big games, so the team is hoping to build on all that we learned to continue working towards another successful season and strong playoff run”. Alex Bausch Sr 2B, Jessa Braudt Sr OF/P, Wren Hipenbecker Sr 3B - All-Conference, Jenna Ruchti Sr OF/UT, Kayahna Furrer Jr P/UT (All-Conference, First Team All-District, Honorable Mention All-State), Kylee Mumm Jr OF/DP, Kylie Cole So C/1B (All-Conference Honorable Mention), Addison Meckley So OF/DP (All Conference Honorable Mention), and Brylie Zink So SS/OF highlight the many returnees for Fennimore this season.

Newcomers: Libby Day Sr C, Leah Edge Sr IF/OF, Tatum Schildgen Sr 1B

Bailee Bray Jr UT, Brooklyn Richardson 3B, Campbell Fitzgerald UT/P, Brooklyn Mumm So OF/DP

Iowa-Grant has many returning letterwinners from a season ago and will look to be right in the middle of the SWAL this season. Lakyn Holman Sr P/IF, Kaycee Lindner Sr C, and Pajessa Baker Jr UT are some of the Panthers top returning players this season for Head Coach Dan Baker. Baker mentioned that senior leadership and team chemistry are their strong points this year.

Notable Losses: Makaya McCarthy, Lillian Pettit, Betley Cutts.

Newcomers: Trinity Baker Jr C/IF, Faith Kite Sr IF/OF, Quinn Hoeper Jr P/IF

Southwestern returns just two all-conference picks in Lauren Koeller Sr OF and Hailey Brant Sr P. The Wildcats also have a new head coach this season with Samantha Bates taking over.

Riverdale returns its two all-conference selections in 2025. (Macy McKay Jr P and Jocelyn Adams So) will join several others including Elaine Olson Jr OF and LIlly Bar Jr 1B.

Boscobel will likely take a step back this season. The Bulldogs graduated the heart of their team in Gretta Grassel P (Conference POY, All State and All District Selection), who is now playing at Mississippi State, along with seven other seniors. The Bulldogs also have a new head coach this season with Sandra Murray taking over.

Darlington will look to senior leadership and returning key players in 2025. The Redbirds bring back six players from last year: Lylah Norgard Sr SS (honorable mention all-conference), Ella Winslow Sr IF, Maddy Corley Sr C, Sydney Wiegel Jr IF/P, Lilly Ritchie So OF, Raynie Norgard So IF/OF. Eigth year Head Coach Molly Rice mentioned that the SWAL is one of the best conferences in southwest Wisconsin and will provide tough competition every game.

Notable Losses: Sophie Wiegel P, Mazie Crist 2B, Braelyn Grossen DP.
