Triple Threat Athlete of the Week: Andrew Nies, River Ridge

The Triple Threat Athlete of the Week is an honor given on WisSports.net to the top senior boys and girls three-sport athletes in the state. Players are recognized each week on WSN, with a boys and girls winner of the Pat Richter Award at the end of the season to the best three-sport athlete of the year.

The Triple Threat Athlete of the Week is presented by the U.S. Marine Corps. The award recognizes student athletes who embody the spirit of teamwork, perseverance, and discipline across multiple sports. The mission of Marine Corps Recruiting Station Milwaukee is to find qualified men and women in Wisconsin and the surrounding area interested in becoming a United States Marine. Marines maintain the legacy of the Marine Corps by winning our nations battles and returning to their communities as quality citizens whether they are active duty or reservist. The coveted title of Marine applies only to those who graduate from the Recruit Depots or Officer Candidate School. RS Milwaukee will provide any qualified man or woman the opportunity to attend the training required to become a Marine - Enlisted or Officer.

Football Honors: four-year varsity starter... two-time team captain... 54 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles as a freshman... 951 rush yards and 14 touchdowns, 69 tackles, 5 tackles for loss; second team all-Six Rivers running back and inside linebacker as a sophomore... 758 rush yards and 10 touchdowns, 80 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 1 fumble forced and recovered for touchdown; first team all-conference running back and inside linebacker as a junior... 1,299 rush yards and 19 touchdowns, receiving touchdown, 97 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, 3 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions for touchdowns; first team all-conference running back and inside linebacker; WFCA all-region running back as a senior... part of Timberwolves conference title teams as freshman and sophomore and four playoff teams... tallied 3,021 rush yards and 44 offensive touchdowns, 300 tackles, 39 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 3 defensive touchdowns in career.

Basketball Honors: four-year letter winner and three-year starter... captain during his senior season... played in 10 games as a freshman... averaged 5.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game as a sophomore... averaged 7.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game as a junior... averaged 9.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game; second team all-Six Rivers-West as a senior... Timberwolves went 84-15 and won three conference championships with Nies... tallied 588 points, 305 rebounds, 131 assists, and 185 steals in career.

Baseball Honors: four-year letter winner... batting .283 with 19 RBIs, 18 runs scored, and 7 stolen bases this year... Timberwolves are 13-4 so far this season.

Favorite Sport (and why): "My favorite sport has always been football since I can remember. I love the physical contact and the strategy behind the game."

Best Part of High School Sports (and why): "I love being part of a team with my friends and I love to compete."  

Best Advice from a High School Coach: "All of my football coaches have always stressed, 'Play every play like it is your last.'"

Most Memorable Moment in High School Sports: "My most memorable moment was being able to play alongside my two older brothers."

Best Part of Playing Three Sports: "The best part of playing three sports is you get to be competitive year round and be with your friends."

Most Difficult Part of Playing Three Sports: "The most difficult part of playing three sports is not being able to spend as much time on the farm as I would like."

Favorite Opponent (and why): "My favorite opponent to play against would either be Blackhawk-Warren or Potosi-Cassville in football because I knew it would always be a physical and fun game."

Favorite Professional Team: "My favorite professional team is the Green Bay Packers."

Favorite Professional Athlete: "My favorite professional athlete is Leo Chenal."

Favorite College Team: "My favorite college team is the Platteville Pioneer Football Team."

Cumulative GPA: 3.7

Toughest Individual You’ve Competed Against (and why): "The toughest individual I have competed against was Owen Seffrood from Blackhawk-Warren. I played against him all four years in football. He always put out 110% and never took a play off."

Most Admired High School Teammate (and why): All of them.  They each bring something to the sports I play with them."

College Plans: "I plan to attend UW-Platteville to play football and major in animal science."

Activities Outside of Sports: "I love to help on our dairy and beef farm. I also enjoy hunting and fishing."
