Megan Johnson of West Salem has been selected as the 2024-25 female recipient of the Pat Richter Award from WisSports.net as the U.S. Marine Corps Three-Sport Athlete of the Year.
Johnson was a 12-time letter-winner, competing in tennis, basketball, and softball.
In Tennis, Megan was a two-time WIAA state qualifier, finishing sixth in Division 2 as a senior for coach Julie Kamla and the Panthers. Johnson was named Coulee Player of the Year as a sophomore, junior, and senior, helping the Panthers to their first two league titles in program history.
On the basketball court, Johnson was a three-time first-team WBCA all-state selection, a two-time Coulee Player of the Year, and led West Salem to a pair of trips to the WIAA State Tournament. As a senior, the 5-11 wing averaged 19.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 4.1 steals per game for coach Mike Malott and the 22-5 Panthers. Johnson finished her career with 1,880 points, 652 rebounds, 219 assists, and 299 steals.
In softball, Megan was a two-time WFSCA all-state selection, earning second-team as a junior and honorable mention her senior season for coach Brian Babiash and the Panthers. Johnson helped the Panthers claim three regional titles, including as a senior when West Salem finished one win away from the Division 2 WIAA State Tournament.
When Johnson was profiled on WSN in September, Johnson said that the best thing about playing three sports is the bonds, friendships, and sisterhood with her teammates.
"I love the sense of community that I get to experience with each one of my teams," said Johnson.
She also explained the challenges of playing three sports.
"Being in three sports can be a lot of work, especially when you are trying to balance being a kid, life, and school. It gets stressful at times, but having sports to distract me from the stress helps a lot."
Johnson is signed to play basketball at Winona State University, an NCAA Division II program in Minnesota.
