Rivals Unite Against Childhood Cancer

On Friday Night, December 19th high school basketball games will be played all over our fine state.  However, one game on this particular night is bigger than the rest.  It's not the top ranked teams in the state, it doesn't feature division one recruits and it's not being played at a big fancy arena.  It does however involve two rival teams that are teaming up off the court to raise money to help fight childhood cancer.

The North Fond du Lac girls team travels to Lomira to take on the Lions in what in recent years usually has major implications in the Flyway conference race.  And while this year the game on the court will be an important one in the Flyway everything surrounding it will be about a bigger cause.  All the proceeds from the game will go to the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer).  The MACC fund was founded in 1976 to help find a cure for childhood cancer.  It was founded by former Milwaukee Buck Jon McGlocklin and is no stranger to high school hoops in Wisconsin with the WBCA All-Star games raising over $1 million for the MACC Fund since there inception.

It is a cause that really hits home for current Lomria player Kelsey Weiglein and former Lion (and current UW-Parkside player) Katie Weiglein whose brother Cody passed away last February after a three year battle with the terrible disease.    "After Cody passed away last season and then working with the MACC fund through the WBCA as an All-Star game coach our program was looking for a way to contribute," said Lomira Head Coach Aaron Olson.

"Although North Fond du Lac and Lomira are big time rivals, Gary  (Kuehl) and I have always had a friendly relationship as well as a great deal of respect for each other. Each year we know that both of our programs do a service-learning project to help others. It made sense to me that when Karin Weiglein brought this idea up to me, that we immediately include Gary and NFDL as well. He was extremely open to it right away, and once you give Karin the okay, things move very quickly."

The game is expected to be a fun and interactive fund raising event with creative things going on in the lobby before the game, in between quarters and a social event with both teams and families in the cafeteria afterwards.  There will also be a raffle, bake sale and a silent auction at the game.  The silent auction will feature special pink jerseys that the teams will be wearing in the game.  The raffle has many great prizes including an autographed Alex Rodriguez baseball.

There are also several sponsors on board that are helping to support the event.  These include  Jacobson's Farmers Supply, Leroy Meats, Brownsville Lions Club, Michels Corporation, American Bank, Bernhard Plumbing, Cole Oil Co., Lawsonia Golf Course, Bublitzs Family Restaurant and Autumn Ridge Golf Course.

So if the calendar is empty on Friday night come on out and watch some great basketball and more importantly, help a great cause.
