Weston girls basketball coach Lauretta Pickel had a busy day Friday. Her Silver Eagles knocked off North Crawford in an important Ridge & Valley Conference game, and only hours later she went into labor. She delivered a healthy baby boy Saturday morning. Congratulations to Lauretta, her husband Matt, and the new baby's older siblings Laurissa and Danny.
The last time a team defended UW recruit Taylor Wurtz with one defender she went for 47 points. Friday night Lomira choose the same strategy but got a different result. She "only" had 32 points in Ripon' 63-57 win. It's hard to say if anyone was guarding Slinger's Lindsay Walter Friday night, as she scored a school-record 39 points in a win over Hartford. Eleva-Strum junior Ronnie Moltzau scored 36 points Friday in a Dairyland Conference win over Lincoln (Alma Center), including 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Not to be outdone, Verona's Leslie Schaefer (pictured) and Janesville Parker's Catie O'Leary put on a display of their own Saturday. The AAU teammates and Division I recruits (Schaeffer to Kent State, O'Leary to Loyola (Ill)) had so much fun they decided they wanted to play some more.
Schaeffer's Wildcats pulled it out in overtime as she scored four of her 30 points in the extra period. O'Leary counted five three-point baskets (including a few from several feet behind the three-point line) among her 32 points.
There were several good games in the Fox Valley area. Appleton West got a key win over FVA foe Kimberly. It's quite a surprise considering Kimberly went 18-0 in conference last year while Appleton West was just 2-16. Here's a write-up and some video. Roncalli came from behind to defeat Saint Mary Central in overtime behind a career-high 17 points from junior Corey Paquette. Tennie Lichtfuss is the leading freshman scorer in the state at just over 17 points per game, and she helped her Oshkosh Lourdes team to a nice Trailways-North win over Green Lake.
There were some big early matchups between conference foes over the weekend as well. Brookfield Central hung on to give West Allis Central their first loss. D.C. Everest had only seven varsity players available against Wausau West, but found a way to pull off the "W". In another Wisconsin Valley matchup, Marshfield shot the lights out in the first half and cruised to an easy victory over Wisconsin Rapids. LaCrosse Central edged LaCrosse Aquinas in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Central senior Ashley Hammes is longing to be able to play full-time after being limited to only a few minutes each game so far this year by painful shin splints.
