Eau Claire North vs. Milwaukee Riverside, Game 2

Final--Lynn Stingley drives in a run with a single to right in the bottom of the fifth for Riverside. But we have a final in the second of two Division 1 quarterfinal games:

Eau Claire North 18, Milwaukee Riverside 2.

Next up is the first game of the afternoon session. Middleton (20-6) vs. Janesville (21-5-1). The Big Eight rivals split their season series, each winning on the other team's diamond.

Fifth Inning (add one)--Yes, we're still here.

After two pitching changes the 16th batter of the inning is up with North now leading 18-1. A fly ball to left and Riverside is now up for most likely its last turn at bat in the game.

In case you're wondering, the 18 runs doesn't make the top five for most runs scored in a Division 1 game. The most was 30 by Oconomowoc vs. Milwaukee Juneau in 1991.

The 10 runs scored in the fifth for EC North, though, is tied for second most in tournament history. Eau Claire Memorial scored 12 runs in the fourth inning in a game in 1961.

5th Inning--Tyler Brown is headed to Central Michigan to play basketball next year. But first the Huskies' first baseman has a state baseball title to pursue before putting the sandlot behind him.

Brown just ripped a two-run triple and scored on Brett Bodenburg's double to center to give North an 11-1 lead in the fifth.

You can make it 13-1.

Tyler Herrmann just blasted a two-run homer over the left-center field fence a few feet away from the scoreboard, to give Eau Claire North a 13-1 lead. Riverside will get at least one more turn at bat. But if the Huskies can keep their lead at 10 or more runs, they would win the game on the mercy rule.

4th inning--
As we approach the lunch hour, North leads Riverside 8-1. Jordan Dickerson delivered an RBI-single in the top of the fourth for North. Malcolm Frazier reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a wild pitch to break the shutout for Riverside in the Tigers' half of the fourth.

In the first game of the day, Wilmot topped Kimberly 4-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

2nd Inning--
It got ugly early and often in the second Division 1 quarterfinal of the day.

Eau Claire North jumped on Riverside for seven runs in the top of the first inning and lead 7-0 in the top of the second. The Huskies took advantage of three errors, four walks and a hit batsman to take it to the Tigers early.

Tyler Herrmann and Corey Bonnin had RBI singles as all seven runs off starter Malcolm Frazier were unearned.

Meanwhile, North was able to pull ace Matt Prosek and save him for the semifinals tonight. Prosek pitched a 1-2-3 first inning for Eau Claire North and then was relieved by Jordan Dickerson, who retired Riverside in order in the second inning.

Kimberly vs. Wilmot, Game 1

Final--
Landon Tenhagen's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh sent Wilmot to a 4-3 win over Kimberly in the first WIAA Division 1 quarterfinal game of the day.

Kimberly pitcher Brad Schreiber retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh. But Joe Felgenhauer reached on an infield single and moved to second when Brendon Hayden dropped a single into left field. Tenhagen then laced a line drive over the head of left-fielder Tony Lamers for the game-winning walk-off hit.

Wilmot will face the winner of the next game between Eau Claire North (19-4) and Milwaukee Riverside (17-12) at 6 p.m. which will begin about 10:30 a.m.

7th Inning--
The toughest throw sometimes is the easiest throw.

Justin Reichwein understands that point loud and clear after he airmailed a throw past first base to give Kimberly a 3-2 lead.

Sam Rein singled with one out and moved to third on double by Will Randerson for Kimberly in the top of the sixth. Reichwein then moved from catcher to pitcher, replacing Travis Sindles, and got Rein at the plate on a failed squeeze attempt.

But when Mitch Weber hit a topper back to the mound, Reichwein threw the ball past first baseman Jay Christian and Kevin DeBruin, who had pinch run for Randerson, scored the tie-breaking run.

Wilmot tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a wild and wooly series of events.

With baserunners on second and third and one out, the tying run was cut down when Chris Nelson was caught too far off base on a ground ball to first base.

Then when Tyler Thomas singled to left, a series of base-running blunders ended up giving Wilmot a run while Thomas was caught in a rundown between first and second.

One fan in front of the press box cracked "Is this the D-4 game?"

5th Inning--
Kimberly's Mitch Weber broke up a no-hitter by Wilmot's Travus Sindles with a lead-off single in the fifth, moved to second on a sacrifice by Devin Hiroskey and scored on a single to right by Luke Van Handel to tie the game at 2-2.

Kimberly got on the board in the top of the third when Weber reached base on a lead-off walk, moved to second on a Hiroskey sacrifice and scored on an error on Sindles on a topper back to the mound by Jamison Wells. However, Wells suffered an ankle injury at first base on the play and was replaced by Van Handel.

1st Inning--Kimberly ace Brad Schreiber is a Purdue University recruit and one of the state's elite pitchers.

But Wilmot treated the Papermakers' ace roughly with a two-run first inning. Landon Tenhagen had the key blow, an RBI-double to right field. Brendon Hayden also scored on a wild pitch to give Wilmot the early 2-0 lead.

A picture-perfect day but rain is part of the tradition so we're enjoing a nice spring day while we can.

Kimberly down in order 1-2-3 in the second on three fly balls. Meanwhile, Schreiber has settled down and retired four of the last five batters he faced. Wilmot holds a 2-0 lead after two innings.
