UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater Earn Spots In NCAA Baseball Field

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater have earned spots into the 54-team field for the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

This marks the third straight year that the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) has had at least two teams reach the NCAA field.

The Pointers (29-14) received an automatic bid after winning the WIAC tournament championship and will compete in the Oshkosh (Wis.) Regional.  UW-Stevens Point will open regional action against University of St. Thomas (Minn.) (31-10).  The Pointers are appearing in NCAA championship for the fifth straight season - and 11th time in program history - and own an all-time mark of 26-23.

UW-Whitewater (26-17) claimed one of the 13 available at-large bids and will participate in the Moline (Ill.) Regional.  The Warhawks will begin regional competition against Washington University (Mo.) (25-10).  UW-Whitewater is making its second straight NCAA showing - and 12th in program listings - winning the national championship in 2005 and possessing and all-time record of 32-22 in postseason contests.

Both regionals are double-elimination format and begin May 13.  Winners of the eight regionals advance to the NCAA championship finals in Grand Chute, Wis., May 22-26.
