With the Easter Holiday now behind us and most schools starting to come off Spring Break, the high school baseball season is officially in full swing. That doesn't mean it's too late for a couple more previews though. The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram has previews of a number of teams in their area, as does the LaCrosse Tribune.
Eau Claire Memorial has a new, but familiar coach looking to continue the program's success. Check out the Old Abes in action here (click play on the video player). The Bruce Red Raiders have had an excellent turnout, thanks in large part to their recent success. Shiocton, on the other hand, is struggling with numbers, but feel they can surprise some teams. Wrightstown thinks this could be the year they break through and get a win in the playoffs. Marathon is the defending Division 3 state champ, and come into the year with high expectations and the #1 ranking in the state.
In action from around the state, Ashwaubenon scored an extra-innings victory over Sheboygan South on Thursday. La Crosse Central's Bobby Juan slugged the Red Raiders to a win over cross-town rival La Crosse Logan. Onalaska remained unbeaten with a win over Mississippi Valley Conference rival La Crosse Aquinas. Roncalli is yet to suffer a loss as well, most recently dispatching Chilton by a score of 7-4. Almond-Bancroft's Braden Huinkins was impressive with his arm and his bat in defeating Tri-County. Stevens Point continued their recent string of come-back wins. Middleton rebounded from two losses over the weekend to defeat Sun Prairie on Tuesday. Finally, Cumberland baseball coach Mark Fuller picked up his 400th career win as the Beavers knocked off Luck Tuesday afternoon.
From the northern part of the state, Park Falls pulled off an impressive feat this week, when four pitchers combined to throw no-hitters in back-to-back games. Speaking of no-hitters, make sure to check out the running tally of no-no's; we're up to 17 as of right now. That includes an amazing SEVEN thrown on Tuesday, April 7. Hayward knocked off Ashland Thursday night in other games from "Up North".
Lastly, don't forget to check out the new High School/Amateur Baseball forum we've added this week. This will give those interested a place to talk about what's going on around the state in high school baseball, and also the happenings in amateur baseball such as the Northwoods League, the Home Talent League, the Rock River League, and any other number of wood bat and amateur leagues around the state. It's also your go-to place for discussion of college baseball, be it UW-Milwaukee, the WIAC, or MWC.
It's an exciting time for baseball here at WisSports.net, what with the expanded information on the WisBaseball.net page; the outstanding addition of Dennis Semrau and his wealth of knowledge and experience; the Opening Pitch blog with all the news, notes, and links you need from around the state; and the addition of a separate high school/amateur forum. So join in the conversations and Play Ball!!
