Hortonville 8, Little Chute 1

After managing just four hits off Little Chute pitchers Katie Van Dyn Hoven and Ashley Schider three weeks ago in a 2-0 loss to the Mustangs, the Polar Bears exploded for 10 hits — eight off starting pitcher Van Dyn Hoven — in a Valley 8 Conference rematch at Hortonville. "Our hitting wasn't very strong earlier in the year and we made it a point to work on that during practice," Hortonville shortstop Danielle Cooper said. "We've really come around with the bats." Winning pitcher Courtney Lautenschlager scattered nine hits, but walked just one and had four strikeouts. She would have finished with a shutout had it not been for a three-base outfield error in the top of the sixth. "I try to throw hard, but mix it up, too," Lautenschlager said. "Today, I had real good control. I was able to move it around the zone." Looking ahead?Little Chute played nowhere near the level it did three weeks ago when the Mustangs broke a long losing streak against Hortonville in a 2-0 win in Little Chute. The Mustangs (11-8 overall, 8-6 Valley 8) open tournament play Thursday against Freedom, and coach Nikol Waters wondered if her team was thinking about the Irish. "There seemed to be a lack of focus," Waters said. "I don't know if they're worried about Thursday or what, but we're not playing together as a team right now." Hortonville players and coaching staff seemed more pleased with the team's continued progress, but evening the score felt nice. "We were very upset with that loss," Lautenschlager said. "So yeah, we wanted to come back and beat them." "We're doing the same things in practice we did earlier in the year. We just got rid of the errors and started hitting the ball. We're back where we should be." — Gil Hart, Hortonville coach.

: Vikings take third place in East Central Flyway

The Reporter Staff

Winnebago Lutheran crushed Berlin on the road, 18-4, on Monday to finish in third place in the East Central Flyway softball standings. The Vikings scored sixth runs in the seventh, so the game went the distance, but it allowed the WLA hitters to have a few more whacks at bat. WLA knocked a season-best 19 hits led by Kyla Pieper and Melissa Collien who both went 4-for-6. "It was a nice chance to get some timely hits," said WLA coach Riley Westphal. "Some of them were nice shots and others were bloopers over the infield, but it was a good game for the girls to hit the ball again and everybody got the opportunity to hit the ball." With the victory, the Vikings (11-7, 10-5) finished in third place behind champion Winneconne and runner-up Waupun. Leah Jones had three hits and four RBIs for WLA and Steph Kramer had a huge day when she had a home run in the six-run WLA second inning and then a two-run triple in the third. "We played pretty solid defense and Emily pitched a nice game, too," Westphal said about Emily Muche's complete-game, six-hit performance. She walked four and struck out five.

Waupun 8-4, Ripon 0-10:

The Warriors got a strong pitching performance out of Ariel Griffis in the first game and the Tigers just outhit Waupun to win the second game. With the split, the Warriors finish 14-6 overall and 11-4 in the East Central to take second behind champion Winneconne. "Griffis turned in a nice shutout performance," said Waupun coach Thomas Hagstrom. "She did a pretty bang-up job in game one. She retired the last 13 batters she faced." Waupun struck for a five-spot in the fourth inning of the opener to give Griffis some insurance runs. Nichole Sturtz went 3-for-4 to pace the Warriors in game one. Kelsey Knaup and Holly Smits both chipped in with two hits apiece. Kayla Block went 4-for-4 for Ripon in the second game and pitcher Angela Hammer had two hits. Brit Kahl, who took the loss in the opener, threw in relief of Hammer and picked up the victory in game two. For Waupun, Brittany Schleicher, Chelsea Redeker and Brittany Flegner had two hits apiece.

Wisconsin Flyway

Kettle Moraine Lutheran 5, Springs 2:

The visiting Ledgers (5-10, 3-7) outhit the Chargers, 10-7, but gave up too many extra outs. "Four errors accounted for four unearned runs," said Springs assistant coach Tom Walentoski said. Becky Pollard led the way for Springs at the plate, going 3-for-3. Courtney Gutreuter had two hits, including a double. Rebecca Newton was the tough-luck loser for Springs in the pitcher's circle. She scattered six hits and a walk, while striking out a pair. The Ledgers loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but Kettle Moraine Lutheran outfielders Courtney Hughes and Alyssa Mayer made running catches on deep balls to end the Springs' threat. "They were beautiful catches by those kids," Walentoski said. "I couldn't believe it. They made great catches to end the game."

Nonconference

Laconia 9, Markesan 1: The Spartans took a 3-1 game and blew it open with a six-run seventh inning in Markesan.

Laura Eubanks had a hot bat for the Spartans (11-6), going 3-for-4 with all extra-base hits. She knocked in three runs. Megan Lynch went 2-for-3 for Laconia and Kaitlyn Schmidt pitched for the victory. Schmidt gave up six hits and four walks, with three strikeouts. "Megan had a good game and Kaitlyn had a good game, but Laura really hit the ball well tonight," said Laconia coach Scott Ritzema.

Lomira 2, Wayland Academy 0:

The Lions ground game helped them beat the Huskies in a windy nonconference game. Lomira scored a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh and played solid defense to preserve the victory. Kelsey Sterr threw a one-hitter over seven innings, striking out eight and walking two. "I thought our girls played very well despite the elements," said Lomira coach Jacob Fakes. "We had a gusting wind blowing straight in. You had to hit the ball on the ground. Anything in the air was caught. We were lucky enough to get a couple runs though."

Ships slip past Notre Dame

Victory sets up FRVC showdown with G.B. West

Press-Gazette

MANITOWOC — Any hopes Manitowoc had of at least gaining a share of the Fox River Valley Conference softball title hinged on getting a win on Monday.

The Ships had to beat Green Bay Notre Dame at Citizen Park in order to stay right behind Green Bay West in the league standings and set up a crucial contest with the Wildcats today in Green Bay.

The showdown is on.

Manitowoc scored two runs in the bottom of the third and held on to beat the Tritons 2-1. The Ships need to beat the Wildcats — a team Manitowoc beat 6-4 earlier this season — to clinch at least a share of the title. The Ships are 10-3 with one FRVC game remaining, while Green Bay West is 10-2 with two games left this week.

Jena Ansorge, who was moved back into the lead-off role for Manitowoc, started the Ships' rally in the third with a one-out single. Ansorge stole second, advanced to third on Kayla Kodet's groundout and then scored on Kendra Woepse's base hit.

Woepse then swiped second base before scoring on Tania Kiel's single to give Manitowoc a 2-0 lead.

That advantage stood until the top of the sixth inning when the Tritons got a run on Becky Kraszwski's RBI single. But Ships pitcher Cory Paquette struck out Notre Dame leadoff hitter Jamie McKeough with runners on first and third to get out the inning with the lead still intact.

Paquette finished with three strikeouts, while surrendering five hits and four walks to pick up the win.

The Tritons' Chelsea Clark limited Manitowoc to just four hits and one walk while striking out three.

Valders knocks off Mishicot

Herald Times Reporter

MISHICOT — Amanda Meidl's two-run double in the first inning staked Valders to the early lead and Sam Schnell pitched a five-hitter as the Vikings closed out their regular season with a 5-2 win over Mishicot in an Olympian Conference softball game on Monday.

Meidl's first-inning, two-out double scored Gina Kiel and Amber Kwasny — who also doubled in the inning — as Valders took a 2-0 lead.

Mishicot (10-7 overall, 8-5 in the OC) got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first, before Valders regained it's two-run cushion in the third when Kwasny doubled again and scored on Shawnae Schwoerer's fielder's choice.

The Indians got back within a run in the bottom of the sixth but Valders (6-8 in the OC) tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Tricia Tienor scored on a Mishicot error and Kiel came across the plate on Kwasn'y's fielder's choice.

Schnell allowed just five hits — four singles and a double by Megan Hischke — and did not walk a batter to earn the win. She also struck out five batters.

Ashlee Skarda was saddled with the loss, allowing seven hits and three walks, while striking out five.

Campbellsport, which pounded out 10 hits in the game, seized the lead with a five-run second inning and then added two in the third and one in the fourth in the win.

In the second game, the Cougars belted two doubles and three home runs and scored in five of the six innings they batted. Alyssa McGray paced Campbellsport's 13-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with a double and a home run.

Stephanie Milmoe, Chelsie Chada and Tabatha Romdenne each smacked triples in the game for the Raiders (6-14 overall, 5-9 in the EWC), with Chada's plating a run.

Pittsville nips Stratford, shares Marawood title

By Jake Miller

Marshfield News-Herald

jmiller2@gannett.com

PITTSVILLE -- Kaitlyn Minor just wanted to go home. There was so much waiting for her. It was an opportunity to help Pittsville earn a share of the Marawood Conference title. It was a chance to stamp "conference champs" on an empty softball banner in the Pittsville gym. It was a chance to be the hero.

Minor, perched on third base, took advantage of a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth to score the winning run as the Panthers edged co-Marawood Conference champion Stratford, 10-9, in eight innings on Monday. "My heart was pounding. I don't even know what goes through your mind," said Minor, who was 0 for 3 before drawing the walk that put her on base. "I just knew that I wanted to go home. Because I wanted to score that run." Stratford was playing for the win and the outright championship, but after scoring four runs in the seventh to tie the score at 9-9, the Tigers couldn't make it out of the next inning. The Tigers and Panthers will share the conference title with Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, which has won the conference every year since joining the Marawood 2001. Stratford, despite the loss, is still a conference champ. For coach Jason Tubbs, it's his first title, and for the Tigers, it is the first one since 1997. "I'm not frustrated at all. We tied for the conference championship. That's the way it is," Tubbs said. "To be honest, we're going to have to play them in regionals, probably. We'll take a shot at them there when we're the home team." For Pittsville, it is the first softball title in school history. "Those are two good programs that I'm proud to be right up there with them," said Brittany Zieher, who picked up the win. "And that's our first conference championship in softball at Pittsville."

The possible rematch would arise in the regional championship game if both teams advance to that level of the Division 3 postseason tournament. Runs came in bursts before the two teams headed into extra innings. Pittsville scored seven in the fourth as Taylor Wilke (3 for 3) and Zieher each picked up two RBI. The Panthers, who lead the Marawood South with a team batting average of .478, hit Stratford pitcher Cassie Krum well and took advantage of several crippling Stratford errors. Mackenzie Hautala and Stacy Halama added two hits apiece to Pittsville's offense. Krum entered the game with a 1.09 earned-run average over 641/3 innings of work, but suffered the loss, striking out 11 while walking seven. Stratford hit well, but stranded five runners in scoring position, including one in the top of the eighth. Krum led the Tigers with three hits, while Kiri Cook and Liz Marron each added two.

The potential winning run, Rachel Breitrick, was thrown out on a close play at home plate.

After singles by Erica Schuurmans and Julie Melnarik to lead off the bottom of the eighth, Basinski poked a grounder through the right side of the infield, bringing home pinch runner Tressa Mann with the winning run.

Rebecca Mann allowed only one hit and an unearned run after relieving Melissa Glenser, who allowed home runs to Veronica Bolle, Tania Kiel and Taylor Rothmund. Bolle also had a two-run triple in the first inning for Manitowoc (10-4 FRVC).

Wautoma 10-9, Wisconsin Dells 7-2

Wautoma still needs to wait to see how South Central Conference rival Mauston fares in the final days of the regular season, but all indications point to the Hornets clinching the league crown in their first season of competition.

"The players set this goal at the beginning of the season," Wautoma coach Leslie Fugate said, "and I was happy they were able to put it together."

In the meantime, the Hornets completed an impromptu twinbill versus Wisconsin Dells that was originally supposed to be played in the beginning of the season. Instead, the teams finished up the first game, which was interrupted by rain April 24, and then Wautoma polished off the sweep.

Pitcher Beth Klemann picked up both victories in the doubleheader and got offensive support from Pam Sommer, who finished the day with five hits and an RBI between the two contests.

Kelly Woehrer crossed home plate during a double-steal attempt to score in the 12th inning late Monday and give the Wildcats a dramatic win over the Patriots.

In the ninth inning, East had a chance to win the game with one out and a runner at third base. But on a bunt attempt, West s Holly Poeschl threw back to Kate Thompson at first for one out, then down to Sarah Pommerening at home to deal East its third out.

"For a team to make plays like that is great," West coach Dave Christman said. "These players have been playing defense all year. They made plays like that under pressure all the time. It was such a credit to both teams."

The second game of the scheduled twinbill was suspended in the fifth inning with the Patriots leading 2-0. The game will start back up next Monday.

SPASH softball shuts down Hodags

By Kyle Means

SPASH softball didn't live up to its championship pedigree in its latest win, but afterwards they got some shirts a champion would wear.

The Panthers sported "8 straight" on their backs after a 4-1 win over Rhinelander, a come-from-behind effort that yielded only five hits from the usually productive offense, but it still clinched SPASH its eighth consecutive Wisconsin Valley Conference championship.

"It's a very great thing to be a part of, and I'm glad to be the head coach of this," SPASH coach Tom Drohner said.

SPASH's offense had to rely on mistakes and close misplays to get its runs. Its three-run fifth inning started off with a triple from Megan Cherney, a hit that originally looked to be no more than a double but was misplayed in the outfield.

"I could have cried," Rhinelander coach Deb Rinka said. "That inning is systematic of what happens to us in our games. We play so well, and then we get shook up and throw that ball away. Instead of stopping the error, they get another error and another error."

The young Hodag team, with only four upperclassmen, disintegrated in the fifth after four solid innings behind starter Katrina Gehrig, who walked a batter with two outs to start the rally.

In a hectic sequence, Rachel Roth singled home a run, a throwing error from left field allowed a second run to score and Roth scored on a throwing error from the third baseman who chased the first errant throw.

At this point SPASH was up 4-1 and had the breathing room it needed after falling behind 1-0 in the first inning.

"I didn't think we played very well today, we weren't disciplined at the plate," Drohner said. "If we want to get to where we want to be we can't go to sleep mentally at the plate."

Freshman Nicole Henke started for the Panthers, giving up only three hits and no earned runs in her first varsity start. After Sara Specht's RBI single, the Hodags had a hard time even getting in position to score, only one hit came after the first.

"It was a little nerve-wracking, but the team really kept me going," Henke said. "I knew I had to hit my spots and stay focused, other then that I knew the defense would have my back."

Merrill 3, West 0

MERRILL -- Abby Arndorfer's triple brought in one of three runs for Merrill in a tight pitcher's duel against Wausau West.

Merrill was only able to score three against West's Eryn Edgerton, who struck out nine batters on the day.

Samantha Schmeltzer answered back for Merrill's side, striking out four while allowing West only two hits and no runs.

"It was a close game," Merrill coach Rick Bonnell said. "Both pitchers threw extremely well. A few girls for us came up and hit the ball deep, that was crucial."
