Ashland scored five unearned runs and strung all four of its hits in the five- run third surrounding two Cardinal errors and a passed ball. "All but one of our losses have been from one bad inning," Cardinals' Coach Ken Dischler said. "This one is on me. We had two huge conference wins last week and followed up with two subpar performances in which we didn't come ready to

play. The girls got the message that that will change for tomorrow's conference game." Andi Schemberger had a two-run double in the first for Park Falls and Kelsey Christianson had two hits. "We hit several deep balls, but they were playing deep and made the catches," Dischler said. "Molly Newhouse made a great running catch on a ball hit by Britt Engel with a runner on second and one out in the sixth. That might have been a game-changer." Park Falls is 8-5 on the season and 5-2 in Lumberjack Conference play.

In the second, Mayville was back at it with a leadoff single by Keshia Muche. Muche stole second and moved to third on Lea Pasbrig s single. After Pasbrig moved up to second, Kasey Schwartzmiller s infield ground ball was late at the plate to get Muche. Schwartzmiller moved up to second. Chelsea Jorgensen then drew a walk to load the bases. Abbie Mueller hit a long fly to center to score Pasbrig, with both runners moving up on the play.

Ariel Wald then hit a two-out, two-RBI single to bring in both Schwartzmiller and Jorgensen. The game remained 7-0 until the top of the sixth. Chelsea Jorgensen started the inning with a single. Abbie Mueller followed with a double and her fourth RBI of the night. Ariel Wald singled to move Mueller to third, and then advanced to second. After Bethany Hurst s groundball got Mueller at the plate, Wald moved to third and Hurst to second. Keshia Muche then singled up the middle tally two RBIs and put the Cardinals up 10-0. Neenah tries to make the most of a struggling offense

By Brett Christopherson

Post-Crescent staff writer

NEENAH — Don't get Richard Frost wrong. He'd love to gaze at a scorebook crammed with hits and runs.

But these days, the Neenah softball coach is living by the adage that beggars can't be choosers.

"We'll safety squeeze. We'll do anything we can," Frost said after watching his team rally to earn a 4-3 victory over rival Menasha on Monday in a Fox Valley Association softball game at Neenah High School. "We'll bunt for base hits. "We'll try to get a team to make a mistake or try to manufacture that run so one hit can score a run."

In other words, the offensive-starved Rockets (3-10 in the FVA) will take their production any way they can get it, which has proven to be a challenge this season, considering they've been blanked in seven of their 13 league games.

"We're just trying to be aggressive," said Neenah senior second baseman Amy Veldhorst, whose one-out triple in the sixth highlighted a two-run inning that tied the game at 3-3. "Just manufacture runs. We're sticking in there, sticking together."

The game-winning run came across in the sixth when Rockets junior center fielder Cassie Winters scored from third after a pitch squirted through to the backstop. Winters opened the inning with a single to right and put herself in that position by stealing third.

An inning earlier, Veldhorst scored the tying run on a one-out safety squeeze.

"We're trying to stay confident, but hitting the ball builds confidence," Frost said. "We haven't been able to make contact and get the hits at the right time. We lose a game (earlier) to Oshkosh West 1-0 where they're able to put two doubles together in one inning to score a run, and we can never put anything together.

"We're getting better. We're starting to make those transitions, and hopefully we're going to peak in another two weeks."

Menasha coach Tom McQuillan, meanwhile, only wished his offense could have peaked on Monday. The Bluejays (3-11) had runners on second and third in the fourth and couldn't score and then stranded another runner at third in the sixth.

"We haven't been able to get any key hits this year," McQuillan said. "It's been a tough year. We're not real sure how to win yet."

Redeker was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Leah Jones went 2-for-3 for WLA, but the Vikings collected only four hits.

"It was kind of the battle for second place," said Waupun coach Thomas Hagstrom. "We were tied for second going in."

Jets' defense falters against Kiel

By Steve Clark

Herald Times Reporter

MANITOWOC — The first time Kiel and Roncalli met on a softball field this season, the Jets' flawless defense played a big part in an 8-2 victory.

In the rematch on Monday, the Jets' defense again played a role in deciding the winner. But this time things didn't go Roncalli's way.

"We weren't quite sharp (defensively) today that's for sure," Roncalli head coach Louie Vigue said following his team's 12-6 loss in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference tussle. "We started out the year very solid with our fielding, (but) lately we've had that one inning in a game where we just mentally lose it."

And when the Jets did have a miscue on Monday, Kiel took advantage.

"We made them field the ball tonight, and that was the difference in the game," Kiel head coach Russ Mueller said. "(In the first meeting) we didn't put the bat on the ball. Tonight, we did a little bunting and put the ball in play a little more, and actually put the pressure on them, instead of them putting the pressure on us. It worked out for us tonight."

The Jets committed two errors in the first inning, which opened the door for four Raider runs, while another miscue in the third boosted Kiel to a 7-2 lead.

Once the Raiders built the lead, the Jets were never able to come all the way back.

"It felt pretty good to get ahead in the first inning. It really helped us out and kept us up high," said Kiel shortstop Abby Driscoll, who finished 3-for-4 and drove in four runs. "I think it keeps the whole team up and everybody in the dugout gets into it. It really helps out the whole team."

Driscoll got the Raiders started in the right direction singling to lead off the game before advancing to third when the Jets misplayed Kayla Sell's sacrifice bunt attempt. Kristin Wierck followed with an RBI-single scoring Driscoll with the first run of the game, while Kiel's next two runs scored on a Roncalli error and Sage Lang's sacrifice bunt.

Hilary Grybush capped the four-run frame with a two-out, run-scoring single that plated Leah Baus.

"We talked about that at our last practice to come out here and score early, put the onus on them to comeback instead of the other way around," Mueller said. "It makes a difference."

Roncalli came back in the bottom of the inning as Heather Roberts walked and Lindsay Balzan smacked a double to put runners at second and third. A pair of wild pitches from Kiel starter Rachel Mathes allowed both runners to score.

Mathes, however, would settle down. After allowing two hits in the first inning — Marissa Haug smacked a one-out single but was thrown out trying to steal second by Grybush — the Jets would not muster another hit in the game and Mathes finished with eight strikeouts and five walks in the contest.

Driscoll's two-run single highlighted a three-run third inning for the Raiders, while her bases-loaded walk in the fifth forced in another run. Sell, who was 2-for-2, drove home another with a single that put Kiel ahead 9-2.

"The last few games, the whole lineup has been hitting pretty good," Driscoll said. "We've been putting the ball in play."

Roncalli (5-7 overall, 5-4 in the OC) got one run back in the bottom of the fifth then scored three runs in the sixth and had the tying run at the plate before Mathes got Balzan to bounce out to end the threat.

"Today, they kept battling and kept working, and that's a great step for us," Vigue said. "We had that situation earlier against Kewaunee, where we just kind of fell apart and then nobody wanted to be there."

The Jets' rally in the sixth was aided by four Kiel errors, but the Raiders came back to all but seal the win with three runs in the top of the seventh. Driscoll added another RBI-single, while Sell plated a run with a double and then scored when Mathes reached on a Roncalli error.

That pushed the Raiders' cushion back to six runs and the Jets would muster only one baserunner in the bottom of the inning as Kiel finished off the win.

"That's the story of our season and it always seems like its one inning (of bad defense) that does it in," Mueller said. "Tonight we recovered from it and usually we don't do that. I give the girls credit for that."

Now the Raiders just hope to keep things rolling in a week in which they have a total of five games, capped by a doubleheader at home against Kewaskum on Friday.

"I think (this is a confidence boost," Driscoll said. "We have some tough games coming up and this is a good start to the week. Hopefully we can keep it going."

Notes: Baus added two hits in the game for Kiel. ... The Raiders finished with four stolen bases in the game, while Roncalli swiped seven bases as a team, including two each by Haug and Lindsay Brisch. ... Carrie Roberts took the loss for the Jets, allowing 10 hits and five walks, while striking out four.

Two Rivers drops pair to Kewaskum

Herald Times Reporter

KEWASKUM — Two Rivers nearly knocked off Kewaskum in the first game of a softball doubleheader on Monday, but ended up being swept by the Indians in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference twinbill.

The Raiders were edged in the opener, 3-2, before falling in the second game 7-1.

Two Rivers got an RBI-double from Amy Veldre in the first inning of the opener to take a 1-0 lead and held the advantage until Kewaskum scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to grab the lead.

Stephanie Milmoe, who went 3-for-4 in the opener and scored both Raider runs, came across the plate after a Kewaskum error to tie the game at 2 in the top of the fifth, but the Indians answered with the game-winner in the bottom of the inning and held on from there.

Ani Steinhauer allowed just five hits and a walk, while striking out four in taking the loss.

In the second game, Kewaskum scored single runs in the first and third innings before plating three runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Caitlyn Clarkson scored Two Rivers' lone run in the second game for the Raiders.

Softball: Spencer relentless in win over Marshfield Columbus

By Steve Pilz

For the Marshfield News-Herald

MARSHFIELD -- Spencer belted six extra-base hits, stole 12 bases and rode the reliable arm of pitcher Taylor Johnson to a 19-6 victory over Marshfield Columbus in six innings on Monday at Mary Rogers field.

Spencer jumped all over the Dons, batting through the lineup the first two innings.

Whitley Phillips' two-run double and Lindsey Ott's three-run double did the damage in the first frame as the Rockets went up 6-0.

Phillips was at it again in the second, cracking a run-scoring triple as the Rockets put up five more runs with the help of three walks and three stolen bases.

Phillips picked up her fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center that scored freshman catcher Deanna Szybowicz. It was one of four runs Szybowicz scored, while also adding three hits, two stolen bases and an RBI.

"One through nine these girls can put a bat on it", said Columbus coach Joan Raschke. "They're not scared to hit. I was proud we didn't give up. Amy (Hartl) did a nice job of pitching today."

Meanwhile, Columbus was trying to stay competitive, picking up single runs in each of the first three innings before cutting Spencer's lead to 13-6 by putting up three runs in the fifth with Mary Sullivan collecting an RBI single.

The Rockets put the game out of reach in their half of the sixth with the help of three free passes and another double by Ott, who picked up her fourth and fifth RBI .

Johnson fittingly retired the Dons 1-2-3 in the ninth.

"We got a lot of hits early and that seemed to boost our confidence," Johnson said. "In the beginning, I was a little frustrated because the strike zone was pretty tight, but I got into it after that."

"We had a let down in the middle of the game after Kiki (Phillips) went down (with an injury)," said Spencer coach Denny Christensen. "We hit pretty well today and Columbus also did a good job of hitting."

After Szybowicz's three hits, Whitley Phillips, Ott and Taylor Johnson each had two for the Rockets and Kevyn Bauman and Mary Sullivan each had two hits for the Dons.

SHIOCTON -- Amherst got the kind of win it wanted after a tough loss to Pacelli Friday, this time it outmatched Shiocton in a 15-2 blowout.

Amherst coach Tim Pederson said he needed to light a fire into his team during the game and they responded in time for the fifth inning. The Falcons scored eight in the inning, making sure that this game would have an early end.

Marissa Trzebiatowski hit a triple and Sam Doll hit a bases clearing double. Also, Remanda Maves went 3-for-4 and Kate Glodowski got two hits. Glodowski also pitched a complete game for the win.

The Indians are now 5-2 in the conference after losing their first two conference games to Columbus and Luther Prep. Freshman Katlyn Saley went 2x4 with three RBI while fellow freshman Karlee Tomlinson went 2x4 with a triple to lead Poynette. Indian catcher Madeline Dugolenski doubled for the 11th time this season while Elyse Rylander tripled. Taylor Hebel got the win with relief help in the fifth from Carmelia Wilson. The Warriors collected four hits and were led by leadoff batter Anna Martin who had a 2x3 game. The Warriors threatened in a couple of other instances but Dugolenski threw out runners to end two of those threats. The win assures the Indians of at least a title share for the 20th time in program history. "After the way our season began and even before it began, it somebody would have told me we'd be in the thick of the hunt here I'd have told them they must be dreaming," said Head Coach Bob Tomlinson. "However, our young kids just kept hanging in there and getting better as we played more and more games and our four pitchers have kept us there as well."
