Christianson relieved freshman Libby Slack in the third inning and threw 2-2/3 innings of no-hit ball for the win. "Libby deserved better," Cardinals' Coach Ken Dischler said. Stratford outlasts Pittsville

By Steve Pilz

For the Marshfield News-Herald

STRATFORD -- While most everyone else in Central Wisconsin took the night off because of inclement weather, Stratford decided it had precious few dates left in a season due to plenty of postponements earlier in the month.

So, despite an unusual number of sweatshirts on the field, and umbrellas and blankets in the dugouts, the hometown Tigers defeated Pittsville 12-6 on the strength of their pitching ace Cassie Krum.

"It was freezing out there," said Krum, who scattered eight hits and struck out 14, but had an uncharacteristically high number of walks with 11. "I don't want to make the weather an excuse. It may have affected me. It was hard to grip the ball, but the defense was awesome."

And so was Krum, all the way up until the fifth inning when Pittsville hit six consecutive singles on its way to scoring five runs in the frame. The big blow for the Panthers came on Taylor Wilke's two-run single.

After that it was all Krum, who struck out six of the last eight batters she faced.

Keri Doll and Hillary Kirsch both had RBI singles in the first to stake the home team to a 3-0 lead.

Krum helped her own cause in the third, as she stroked a double to left-center field that knocked in three runs to give the Tigers a 7-1 advantage.

Despite Pittsville's big fifth inning, the Tigers answered right back in the sixth with three more runs to put the game away. Doll knocked in two more runs with a single.

"For the weather conditions, we did pretty well against a great pitcher (Britt Zieher)," said Tigers coach Jason Tubbs. "I was real proud of our girls to score 12 runs. That was 100 percent the weather (refering to Krum's high walk count). It's tough to throw strikes or get a grip on the ball. She's a battler."

"We battled well against a really tough pitcher," said Pittsville coach Dan Hoffa. "We left too many on base. I'm proud that we gave them a game. With this weather, I was just happy they gave 100 percent."

The Raiders and Cardinals battled for the top spot in the Lumberjack Conference and both brought the lumber. Kylie Fitzgerald's two-out, two-run homer over the fence in center put Medford up 2-0. The Raiders scored five times in the second after two were out to lead 7-0. Park Falls got one back in the second and doubles by Kelsey Walasek, Kelsey Christianson and Devin Schmidt fueled a two-run third as Park Falls cut the deficit. Fitzgerald launched another two-run homer, which just cleared the fence in center, to put Medford up 9-2. A solo blast by Christianson sparked a four-run fifth for Park Falls to make it 9-7. The Raiders added an unearned run in the top of the seventh for insurance. Dyer had three hits for the Raiders and Fitzgerald, Morgan Beyer and Abbie Lavin had two each. Schmidt had three hits and Christianson, Tiffany Zwicke and Maddie Lamb had two each for Park Falls. Medford makes the turn at the midpoint in the LC at 5-0 and Park Falls falls to 3-2.

Shoreland Lutheran traveled out of their region to take on Lomira in a non-conference game this afternoon. It ended up being a very well played, pitching duel. Sophomore left fielder, A.J. Naumann rocked a ball to right field with one out in the top of the 10th to provide the game winning solo homerun. Shoreland s 1st run came in the 2nd inning when Alyssa Bahr led off with a single and advanced to 3rd on a ground out and a past ball. Bahr then slid under a tag on a wild pitch. Defense then took over for both the Pacers and the Lions. Lion s pitcher, Kelsey Sterr, with the help of a solid defense, limited Shoreland to only 2 hits in 3rd through 9th innings. For the Pacers, Rochelle Willkomm limited Lomira to only 2 hits through the 1st 6 innings. Lomira tied the game in the bottom of the 7th when Casey Maeder opened with a leadoff walk. She then advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt and 3rd on a single by Jamie Kenealey. Brenda Schwemer laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Alysha Kurz then singled home Maeter to knot it at 1. Lomira still had bases loaded with one out with the winning run at 3rd. With the infield in, Willkomm forced a grounder to 2nd for a force out at the plate. Then with 2 outs, the inning was ended with a pop out to short. Lomira again threatened in the 9th with a runner on 3rd before Willkomm forced a ground out to end the inning. After Naumann s homerun put the Pacers on top 2-1, Lomira had the tying run at 3rd with one out in the bottom half of the 10th. Centerfielder Alyssa Bahr made a nice catch and throw back to home to prevent tag up attempt and then right fielder Kaitlyn Biggs chased down a tailing fly ball to right to end the game.

Summer schooled - Rosholt 4, Horicon 0

By TOM KAHL

Sports Editor

HORICON - Roger Schliewe got a dose of his own medicine Friday afternoon.

Anna Zdroik, a Tennessee Tech recruit, pitches for Schliewe's Wisconsin Bandits softball club team in the summer. Zdroik put Schliewe's teachings on display while twirling a five-hit shutout as Rosholt blanked host Horicon, 4-0, in a Division 3 non-conference showdown.

Rosholt, ranked fourth by the Fastpitch Chronicle, stayed perfect in 11 tries. Horicon, ranked 13th, slipped to 8-3 on the year.

"I think definitely where Anna is at is thanks to Roger," Rosholt coach Tom Fields says. "He taught her a million things I couldn't have taught her.

"It's one of the biggest reasons Anna is going to Tennessee Tech. It's not often you'll see someone help kids from anywhere and to help kids along like that is very rare."

Zdroik scattered five hits and a pair of walks while striking out three. Horicon had runners on base in each of the first six innings but couldn't string together any offense against the Hornets.

The Marshladies have a college recruit of their own in the circle in UW-Green Bay-bound Chelsie Held. Horicon's three errors led to three of Rosholt's four runs.

"I was unhappy with our lack of focus," Schliewe said. "You can't make mistakes against a good team and expect to win.

"This is what I want our kids to face, a team that will make us play. I'm happy with the way we hit the ball."

Tanya Kluck led off the second with a double to center and scored when Held threw wide of third trying to catch her off the bag on a grounder. Later in the frame, Held looked back Chelsea Richter, but not long enough to deny a safety squeeze from Elizabeth Carson that doubled the lead.

Horicon got runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings. Perhaps the most curious play was Brittany Young's failed attempt to steal home on catcher Nichole Wierzba's throw back to Zdroik with Steph Wehner, Horicon's third hitter, up with two outs.

With one out in the fourth, Bri Schwartz bobbled Emily Richter's grounder and she later scored on Carson's single - her second RBI on the day. The Hornets pushed it to 4-0 in the fifth with Shelby Scharpf lost the handle on Dreem Carlson's liner directly at her.

Jeanie Limberg, the next batter, singled up the middle to put the game out of reach.

"We made some contact on the best pitcher we've faced this year," Fields said of Held, who struck out four without a walk. "The difference is we executed and they didn't, otherwise we might still be playing."

Both teams have eyes on Goodman Diamond later in the season with the standout hurlers they possess. Schliewe hopes his team will bounce back in time for Monday's Wisconsin Flyway clash with arch-rival Mayville (11-1), Division 2's 10th-ranked squad.

"It's a wake-up call that we need to make big plays in big games," Schliewe said. "We'll work on this and get better with a young team."

Young and Sam Davidson each had two hits for Horicon

Hogan's blast lifts Chippewa Falls over Beaver Dam, 2-1

By Citizen Staff

ASHWAUBENON - Chippewa Falls' Mikayla Hogan turned on a Kari Baker pitch for a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, lifting the No. 6 Cardinals past Beaver Dam, 2-1, Friday in the opening game of the Ashwaubenon Tournament.

"This is the way I know we can play," BD coach Peter Woreck said. "We gave a pretty big scare to the No. (6) team in the state."

BD (2-3) took lead in the top of the sixth when Chelli Wuesthoff scored from second on a Baker infield hit with two out.

Then in the bottom of the inning, Hogan turned on an inside pitch and hit the ball out of the park for the game-winning run.

Baker struck out four and did not walk a batter in the loss.

Brooke Malmory earned the victory for Falls (4-3).

BD faces Appleton North in the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. today. BD will then play either Germantown or Milwaukee Pius at 1:30 p.m.

By Paul Keup

Herald Times Reporter

VALDERS — While the Valders High School softball team achieved another first on Friday, Manitowoc Lutheran found itself reeling on a three-game losing streak.

In the first game of an Olympian Conference doubleheader, Valders topped Lutheran, 7-4, behind two hits by Gina Kiel and a complete-game outing by Sam Schnell.

The Lancers, a perennial OC heavyweight, had just lost their third game this week, but their coach didn't need any rah-rah pep talk.

"I didn't tell them anything," Lutheran head coach Don Menges said. "They knew I was upset with the first game."

The finale was a different story.

Amber Liermann and Brooke Schramm each had two hits as the Lancers salvaged a split with an 8-3 win as a sunny afternoon turned into a cool night.

"We didn't play our best in the first game, and we knew we needed to win the second one," said Liermann, who was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the opener while going 2-for-4 with a two-run triple in the nightcap. "We knew we should've won the first game, and it was our third loss in a row. We were more determined than ever."

Valders, meanwhile, was happy to get its first win over Lutheran in "at least four years," senior Amanda Meidl said.

"I'm disappointed not to win both games, but it's been a long time since we beat Lutheran," said Meidl, who made an over-the-shoulder catch in center field during the opener. "I'm happy with the split."

So is Vikings' head coach Jane Linzmeier.

"We've been doing a lot of 'firsts' this year," Linzmeier said. "We're taking at least one from teams that we haven't beaten in years. Lutheran is always strong."

Valders (4-4 overall, 4-3 OC) took the opener after coming back to answer — and exceed — Lutheran's early scoring outburst.

Each team scored three runs in the first, and Lutheran (7-4 overall, 6-2 OC) took a 4-3 lead after the top of the second.

But Valders scored three more in the bottom half on a leadoff error, a walk, and two singles.

"I liked how aggressive we were in the first game," Linzmeier said. "We didn't panic, and we stayed focus."

In between the games, Lutheran regrouped and it showed.

The Lancers got a 1-2-3 defensive inning in the top of the first, and they scored one run in the first and four more in the second.

Then ace pitcher Brooke Schramm, who has a sore shoulder, went to the mound for the first time all day.

"We had to (pitch Brooke)," said Menges, who saw Stephanie Kasten go 3-for-4 in the opener. "We couldn't have two losses. We came in thinking even if we lost one we're still in the thick of things in the conference race."

Valders got a tally in the third and two in the sixth, but Lutheran closed out the win with some insurance runs in the sixth and a 1-2-3 seventh.

"Since we snapped (our losing streak), our confidence is back," said Liermann, whose team lost to St. Mary Central and Algoma this week. "We have to keep going and push forward. We have to play our game the way we know we can."

The Lancers hope to maintain control of their destiny in the title hunt.

"We'll be strong the rest of the way if Brooke is healthy. I'm sure she will be; she has that mentality," Menges said. "We play good defense behind her, and we just have to hit the ball. The girls have been hitting well, but lately it's been going right at people. It's just a matter of having confidence in themselves."

Valders knows all about that.

"We've improved our record a lot over last year at this time," said Meidl, who pitched the finale while getting a single and scoring in the sixth. "We're (have four wins), and last year we only had five the whole year. We've made a big improvement this year."

NOTES: Lutheran hosts Chilton on Monday at Westfield Park. … Valders hosts Brillion in an OC doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday. … Valders' Amber Kwasny played with an ankle injury and doubled in the first game.

SPASH softball uses big fifth inning to beat West

By Kyle Means

If Wausau West coach Janna Pingel could have it her way, a Kelcie Wittman homer would have decided the softball game between the Warriors and Stevens Point Area Senior High on Friday.

SPASH, however, was hitting too well in this game to lose, and a breakthrough was bound to happen. After Wittman's second-inning shot, the Panthers rallied with a five-run outburst in the fifth, which gave SPASH a crucial 5-1 conference win.

"(SPASH is) a good hitting team. If we give them anything, then they're going to go with it," Pingel said. "(A rally) is always in the back of my mind because they've done it to us many times."

Two of the top four teams in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, SPASH and Wausau West came into Friday's game ranked No. 2 and No. 11 in the state respectively.

The Warriors' Erin Edgerton struck out three batters in a complete-game effort.

SPASH's Stacy Tuskowski was even better in her complete-game, two-hit performance, allowing West to make contact, but rarely hit the ball out of the infield.

"Stacy kept hitting her spots," SPASH coach Tom Drohner said. "The one mistake, I called a changeup and she got it up in the zone. Wittman has hurt us in the past with changeups. She got a good piece of the ball and drove it out of the ball park."

Edgerton withstood a couple SPASH threats prior to the fifth. SPASH got its leadoff hitter on base every inning, and often put them in scoring position, but the Warriors starter responded by attacking the inside of the plate and forcing pop outs.

"It's huge because you get to put a little pressure on (the pitcher)," Drohner said. "We move them over and hope for a big hit, especially in a tight game."

SPASH kept itself in the game defensively with sharp plays such as right fielder Megan Cherney's diving catch to end the top of the third inning, and a pickoff of a West player at third base with two runners on in the fourth.

The bottom of the fifth saw SPASH break through first with small ball -- the Panthers started the inning with three singles -- then with slugging -- four runs scored on two-run doubles by Emily Haluska and Jordan Kryshak.

"We just had to get the bats going. As soon as we do that, then we're the team to beat," Kryshak said. "That fifth inning was clutch for us and it really turned the game around."

Marion 6, Almond-Bancroft 5

ALMOND-- Randy Yonke said his young Almond-Bancroft team started the game flat and without emotion.

By the sixth inning, the group came alive to the tune of five runs, but it still wasn't enough to bring down Marion.

Chelsea Gendua struck out 12 batters in a complete-game effort, but she also walked nine. Six of those walks came in a three-run first, where Marion took control.

"A play here and there makes a difference," Yonke said.

That play ended up being a double in the seventh inning that off the third baseman's glove and down the line.

Almond-Bancroft will get another shot at Marion on Monday, again at Almond.

"They know we can play them tough," Yonke said. "It should be another good contest."

Schmeltzer back in big way for Merrill softball

Wausau Daily Herald

MERRILL -- Sam Schmeltzer wasted no time in making an impact in her return to the Merrill softball team

Schmeltzer, who had missed the entire season recovering from an ACL injury, was the game's winning pitcher and had the game-winning hit as the Bluejays rallied to edge Marshfield 3-2 in 10 innings on Friday.

Trailing by 1 after Marshfield scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th, Schmeltzer ripped a single with runners on second and third to end the game. Schmeltzer was 2 for 5 for the game and struck out one and walked none in three innings of relief of Abby English.

"I wasn't worried about getting her in there," Marshfield coach Rick Bonnell said. "She's a gamer, and the therapist said she passed all her tests. She was ready to go."

Leah Krueger was 2 for 4 in the win for Merrill, while English struck out three and walked two.
