Three of Eight Beats Four of Four: A Quick Look at Some Personal Bests & High Notes

This post is for those of you who aren't going to win Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009 (sorry) or be ranked No. 1 in the state or nation (sorry again). It concerns a topic to which Cheese & Volleyball gave considerable attention during the club season -- and one we figured might be worth exploring over here during the high school seasons.

Here's the basic idea: While it's nice to be named the absolute best of the absolute best (OK, really, really nice), it's certainly not the only way to enjoy a volleyball season. Heck, if it were, most of us would be mostly miserably most of the time. And we've seen enough of you to know you're not.

That's because almost every day in Wisconsin, players, teams, coaches, parents, family, friends and assorted fans are experiencing and witnessing personal bests and high notes. Here are just a few random examples:

Finishing Third of Eight at Your Own Tournament One Year after Finishing Fourth of Four
Read this tweet by Brian Zimmerman, head coach of the Neenah boys team. He's clearly excited about the progress his program is making, a program which we believe was near extinction just a few years ago. And with that as the alternative, every small step is reason enough to celebrate.

Making It Out of a Three-Team Pool When the Other Two Are Ranked No. 1 in the State That's what Waunakee was able to do on Saturday at the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Invite after they found themselves in a three-team pool with the No. 1-ranked teams in both Division 1 and Division 2. Thanks to a 27-point cap on pool play games, their victory over Catholic Memorial was by a grand total of two points: 27-26, 27-26.

Starting a Season Stronger Than Most Were Expecting You to Start a Season We're referring to UW-Parkside and, yes, we know this is supposed to about high school sports. But it's exciting to see so many former Wisconsin prep stars doing well at the only NCAA Division II school in the state. Wisconsinites on the roster include Tami Gleason (Cuba City), Andrea Gust (Kettle Moraine Lutheran), Cassy Marx (Kettle Moraine Lutheran), Jennifer Johnson (Racine Horlick), Abby Beilke (Waterford), Rebecca Kelly (Kenosha Tremper), Addie Kramer (Appleton Xavier), Caroline Langer (Pius XI), Vicki Hart (Greendale), Cassie Wilkens (West Bend East) and Rachel Burmester (Greenfield).

Sure we're only tapping the surface, but that only means it's now your turn (yeah, you) to share personal bests and high notes that have occurred so far in your season. Leave them as a comment to this post or e-mail them to vbuberalles@gmail.com and we'll share them as a comment to this post. Thanks.
