Team Performances:

Elkhorn- The Elks got out to a slow start in 2011, going 2 and 2 through their first 4 games. That trend has since been reserved. In seven games, Elkhorn has gone unbeaten, tearing through each of their opponents they faced. Last week was no exception, beating up their competition by an average of nearly 6.5 goals a game in route to a perfect 3-0 week. More importantly, the Elks have maintained their undefeated conference record by dispatching Burlington 6-0 and Lake Geneva Badger 6-1 respectively bringing their Southern Lakes record to 4 and 0.

Middleton- The Cardinals may be the hottest team in the state as of late. Not only have they been undefeated in the last seven games, but they have been unscored upon in the last three. However, what makes Middleton’s most recent win streak even more impressive is how well they have performed against quality opposition. Last week alone, The Cardinals handed two top 5 teams, in Kettle Moraine and Madison West, shutout losses. They gave Madison West its’ first loss of the year, in dominating fashion, by defeating them 4 to 0. In a non-conference match up against Racine St. Catherine’s, Middleton proved too much, cruising to an easy 7 to 0 victory.

Hortonville- Sometimes quantity is better than quality. In the case of the Polar Bear soccer team, they had a bit of both last week. Hortonville played five games, coming away with four wins and one tie. Obviously that is a large win total in just one week worth of play, which in itself is worth spotlighting. However the high point to the week came in the only game that the Polar Bears did not win, against Green Bay NEW Lutheran. In a game that saw Hortonville as the underdog, the Polar Bears played one of the top teams in division 3 to a 2 to 2 tie, giving Hortonville a quality result against a quality opponent.

Chippewa Falls- The Cardinals kicked off its week four schedule with a win over conference rival Eau Claire North 3 to 1. Over the weekend, the Cardinals tested their grit in the Wausau West Invitational, where they came away undefeated. After beating an overmatched Waupaca team 4 to 0, Chippewa Falls saw a step up in competition, playing Mosinee. Coming in to the game the Indians had been unbeaten and relatively untested, but that all changed, as Chippewa Falls prevailed in a 3 to 1 contest. The final game of the invitational proved to be the toughest for the Cardinals, facing then 8-2-0 and host Wausau West. The results remained the same, another victory for the Cardinals, in a close, hard fought 1 to 0 win, capping off a perfect 3 and 0 sweep at the Wausau West Invitational.

Evansville- Last week’s results may not have been overly flashy, but Evansville’s performance in those contests was impressive. In what was arguably the toughest stretch in the Blue Devils season schedule, Evansville came away with one win, one loss, and two ties. Not what one would call ideal, but nevertheless, a small victory for the Evansville team. The Blue Devils squared off against Badger South combatant Monroe, which resulted in a one to one tie. In a pivotal early season Rock Valley match-up, Evansville defeated division 2 rank McFarland 3 to 2, proving they belong in the conference championship discussions. At the Milton Invite, playing against larger schools, the Blue Devils showed the ability to play up with the level of competition, losing a tough 2 to 0 game with Lafollette, and earning a scoreless draw with Waterford. Last week verified that Evansville is a legitimate contender in division 2.

Player Performances:

Erik Boese, Wisconsin Lutheran – Sophomore forward Erik Boese was heavily involved in the Wisconsin Lutheran offense last week. Boese either scored or assisted in all of the Vikings 8 goals in their four games. He totaled 5 goals, one of which ended up to be the game winner, and added 3 assists in three victories and one defeat.

Shane Hanna, Aquinas – In a three game stretch which saw Aquinas’ offense explode for 26 goals, Shane Hanna was able to stand out as a key playmaker for the Blugolds. In the three games, Hanna netted 8 goals, and assisted on five other Blugold scores, as Aquinas won all of their contests. Shane stood out because of versatility on offense, allowing him to be equally as effective as distributor and as goal scorer.

Sean Taylor, Kenosha Christian Life – If the Eagles had voted on who was the team’s Most Valuable Player last week, the award would have gone to Sean Taylor. The senior accomplished what all coaches expect from their forwards; create scoring chances for their teammates and themselves, and that is what he did. Evident by his 9 goals and 4 assists output.

John Winter, Living Word Lutheran – The Sophomore goalkeeper stopped 25 shots on goal in two games and recorded a shutout victory for Living Word Lutheran. He allowed only two goals, both coming against Dominican in a 2-1 loss. However he made a staggering 16 saves, keeping the Timberwolves in a game that could have been a blowout. Winter had a 93% save percentage in Living Word Lutheran’s most recent contests.

Bernabe Barba, Saint Anthony’s Roman – Barba provided an offensive spark for his Saint Anthony’s team last week. In 4 games, Barba scored 5 goals and 2 assists in two victories and two defeats. Bernabe’s production was a welcomed surprise for the Legion, as he did not have a single point in the previous 9 games before scoring his first goal against Milwaukee South last Wednesday.
