THE DIVISION 1 FIELD: Defending champion Marquette qualifies for State for the 12th straight year, which is also its overall number of appearances. The Hilltoppers have won seven of the last 11 championships, winning four consecutive crowns from 2000-03 and adding titles in 2005, 2008 and again last season. In addition, they finished runner-up in 2004 and 2007. They qualified by virtue of their 2-0 win over Whitefish Bay in the Whitefish Bay Sectional final. Brookfield East is making its second straight appearance and its 15th overall, which ties Neenah for the most of any member. The Spartans won State titles in 1995 and 1997 and finished runner-up seven times (1982, 1987, 1989, 1993, 1999, 2003 and 2006). The Spartans advance as winners of the Brookfield Central Sectional following their 2-0 victory over Menomonee Falls in the final. Neenah is making its first appearance since 2008 and its 15th overall, sharing the distinction with Brookfield East of having qualified the most of any school. The Rockets won back-to-back titles in 1985 and 1986, and added another in 2007. They placed runner-up in 1983 and 1991. They advance to State following a 1-1 (4-2) shootout with Appleton North in the final of the Oshkosh West Sectional. Middleton returns to the tournament field for the second consecutive season and for the 12th time overall. The most notable of accomplishments was a State championship in 2004 and a runner-up finish in 2000. The Cardinals qualify as the champion of the Waunakee Sectional, advancing with a 1-1 (3-0) shootout against Madison West in the final. Green Bay Preble returns to the State Tournament for the first time since the 2008 season and for the seventh time overall. The Hornets furthest advance in the tournament came with a pair of semifinal appearances. They defeated Kimberly 3-2 in the final of the Ashwaubenon Sectional to earn a berth in the field. Kettle Moraine will be returning to State for the second time. The Lasers only other experience in the tournament resulted in a loss in the 2007 quarterfinals. They earned a return to the final field of eight with a 2-0 shutout over Waukesha West in the sectional final the Lasers hosted. Chippewa Falls is also making its second appearance. The first came in 2005, which resulted in a loss in the quarterfinals. The Cardinals’ defeated Wausau East 2-0 in the sectional final they hosted to advance to the State quarterfinals.
Elkhorn defeated Kenosha Tremper 2-1 in the Kenosha Bradford Sectional final to secure the Elks’ first-ever trip to the State Tournament.
THE DIVISION 2 FIELD: Defending champion Catholic Memorial is back in the State Tournament for the sixth straight season and for the seventh time overall. The Crusaders won the title last year after having placed runner-up the previous three seasons. They will contend for a repeat title following a 2-1 triumph over New Berlin West in the sectional final at Pewaukee. Last year’s runner-up Fox Valley Lutheran attempts to regain the title it won in 2009. The Foxes qualify for the State Tournament for the third straight season and for the third time overall. They advanced from the Stevens Point Sectional final via a 0-0 (4-3) shootout with Amery. Mount Horeb will make its second State Tournament appearance after experiencing its first last season. The Vikings earned the return engagement in the tournament with a 7-1 victory over Edgewood in the sectional final at Mount Horeb. Sturgeon Bay advanced to State last year in Division 3, which was the first time the Clippers had qualified for State. They fell in the semifinals to eventual champion The Prairie School. This season, they move up a division and qualify following a 3-2 win over Notre Dame in the Wrightstown Sectional final.
THE DIVISION 3 FIELD: Defending champion The Prairie School returns to defend its title. The Hawks have now reached the State Tournament five times. They made three straight appearances from 2003-05 that produced back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005, and a runner-up finish in 2003. The Hawks defeated Racine St. Catherine’s 3-1 in the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Sectional final to earn the chance to repeat. Newman Catholic qualifies for the second straight year and for the third time overall. Each of the Cardinals’ first two appearances have resulted in defeats in the semifinals. The Cardinals make a return trip to Milwaukee following a 1-0 blanking of Columbus Catholic in the Stevens Point Sectional final. Winnebago Lutheran qualifies for the State Tournament for the second time in the last three years and for the third time overall. The Vikings finished runner-up in their first-ever appearance in 2005. They defeated Kohler 1-0 in the sectional final the Vikings hosted. Central Wisconsin Christian qualifies for the State Tournament for the first time since its only other experience in 2003. That resulted in a loss in the semifinals. The Crusaders advance to the semifinals this season after defeating St. Anthony 1-0 in the Central Wisconsin Christian Sectional final.
