Matt Fosdick of Brookfield boys hockey has been selected as the Army National Guard Athlete of the Week for the week of February 20th through the 26th following a statewide vote on WisSports.net. Fosdick led his team in scoring last week as the surprise Stars advanced to the state tournament for the first time in 15 years. The Brookfield Central/Brookfield East Co-op will face off with the defending state champions Wausau West in the semifinals tonight at 5 pm after knocking out Eau Claire Memorial 3-2 in the quarterfinals yesterday. . The senior accounted for 39.4% (845) of the total vote this past week with only Sheboygan Lutheran's Sam Dekker posing any threat with 30.4% (651). The other three candidates were only able to combine for 647 total votes.
The Stars, who entered the playoffs as a fourth seed in Sectional #8, took the improbable route to the state tournament this week in Madison. Fosdick and Co. ousted top-seeded Homestead 7-2 in their February 21 match up to advance to the sectional finals against Fond du Lac, a seventh seed. The all-state defenseman scored two goals and had two assists in the Homestead game, both coming off of power plays. He kept the hot hand later that week against the Cardinals, tying up the game 1-1 with over 12 minutes left in the second period. His lone goal of the game led to Mason Kollakowsky's go-ahead score about a minute later.
Remember, the only way your favorite player can be named Army National Guard Athlete of the Week is to vote and share the word. Look for the next week's nominees to be posted Sunday afternoon.
