Below are the nominees for the Army National Guard Athlete of the Week for the week of February 27th through March 4th.  Voting is below and will be open until Thursday at 4:00pm with the winner announced Friday morning.
Mason Appleton, Notre Dame boys hockey – The Tritons finished the 2011-12 season as the WIAA state champions.  Since last Thursday the team has played three games in as many days, outscoring their competition 14-6.  Appleton,  a sophomore, was held pointless for the first  10 periods of the state tournament but came up big in the state final against Wausau West.  Almost four minutes into the second overtime, the score tied at 2-2, the forward hit a shot from near the right-side of the Warriors' net to secure the Tritons' first state title in school history.  Appleton had not registered a point since Notre Dame's second-round game against Fox Cities on February 21; he had one goal and two assists.
Ryan Bloom, Boyceville boys basketball – Fifth-ranked Boyceville is two games away from its first appearance at the state tournament in school history.  The Bulldogs went 3-0 last week to place them in the sectional semi-finals against #2-seed Chequamegon.  The 6-foot-1 senior totaled almost 50 points through the first three rounds as Boyceville beat Clear Lake and upset Cameron and top-seeded Grantsburg.  He scored just eight points in a 82-23 opening-round victory against Clear Lake, but went on to score 19 and a game-high 23 points against the Comets and Pirates, respectively.  Grantsburg (18-5) had won 11 of their previous 12 games before dropping 46-58 to the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Kristine Fonti, Central Wisconsin girls hockey – The D.C. Everest Co-op only allowed four goals through five playoff games over the last two weeks on the way to their second state title in five years.  The Storm went on a 4-0 run after two early goals by top-ranked Onalaska to cruise to a 6-2 win at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.  Fonti, a senior goalie, was impenetrable during the state tournament this past week, only allowing three goals in 102 minutes of net time.  She had 19 saves in the semi-finals against Hayward on Friday, and matched that total against the Hilltoppers the following day.

Deandre Harris, Milwaukee Washington boys basketball – The Purgolders advanced to the sectional semi-finals this past week as they took Brown Deer and bracket-buster Nicolet.  They will face-off with #5 seed Wauwatosa East this Thursday for the right to advance to the sectional finals against either Whitnall or Milwaukee Pius.  Harris was the go-to man for Washington through the first two rounds, averaging 21.5 points per game while shooting 83% from the free throw line.  He scored a team-high 18 points, and the game-winning shot, in Washington's 56-54 opening-round win over the Falcons.  The next night he scored eight of the first thirteen points of the game and closed the first half with his own seven points to put the Purgolders ahead 35-23 at the half.  The senior would go on to score a game-high 25 points in a 70-44 Washington victory.
Kenzie Perttu, Green Bay Preble girls basketball – Preble finished the regular season 15-7 (12-4, Fox River Classic) and will face the Bay Port Pirates this Friday in a regional finals playoff game.  The fifth-ranked Hornets won their last two games of the regular season by a combined 66 points, led both times by senior forward Kenzie Perttu.  The Michigan Tech recruit scored 22 and 19 against Appleton North and Green Bay West, respectively.  She now sits at 1,573 career points, which is both a school and Green Bay metro-area record.  Perttu broke the 12-year area record last week when she poured 33 points on Kiel.  Trisha Ebel, who owned the all-time scoring record in Green Bay from 1995-98, finished her career with 1,511 points, according to the Green Bay Press Gazzette.
