Madison Memorial's incredible streak of 12 straight Big Eight Conference championships appeared in jeopardy earlier this summer as the Spartans returned just one starter in a league loaded with young talent.
Most Big Eight observers figured Madison East, Middleton, Sun Prairie or maybe even Janesville Craig or Madison West had excellent shots at dethroning Memorial as league winners.
All that changed this week when junior Chris Knight, a talented 6-foot-7 forward with multiple NCAA Division I scholarship offers, enrolled at Memorial.
Due to a family move from DeForest, Knight is eligible to play at Memorial and is, in fact, already participating in football practice at the far west-side school.
"I am moving to the Memorial-area district," Knight said today. "I'm excited. I think it will help me really develop my game."
A long, athletic forward with excellent rebounding and shot blocking skills, Knight flashed plenty of promise while playing for coach Craig Weisbrod at DeForest last season. He averaged 8.9 points per game for a young, talented team many felt would challenge for the title in the Northern Division of the Badger Conference.
Knight then enjoyed a strong showing in the spring and summer while competing with the Wisconsin Swing club program coached by Justin Litscher.
He showed the ability to make strong moves to the basket off the wing and finish above the rim. He also can make mid-range jump shots.
A stellar student who is young for his class, Knight has picked up scholarship offers from Green Bay, IUPUI and Milwaukee thus far and is ranked No. 6 among prospects in the class of 2017 by WisSports.net.
Knight joins a talented junior class at Memorial that also includes returning starter Jake Ferguson (6-6) and returning letter winners Matt Caropreso (6-7), Billy Wilson (6-0) and Logan Knecht (5-10).
A frontline of Knight, Ferguson and Caropreso not only gives veteran coach Steve Collins the best size in the league, but it also gives the Spartans excellent depth along the baseline.
Indeed, the addition of Knight makes Memorial, once again, the team to beat in the Big Eight Conference. The Spartans own a 188-18 record in league play during their 12 straight league title seasons.

Lucas plans to take an unofficial visit to Illinois this weekend followed by official visits to Purdue (Aug. 28), USC (Sept. 4) and Old Dominion (Sept. 11).
