Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

Last week a Wisconsin athlete was named as a Big Ten player of the week. This week was no different. Minnesota’s kicker Emmit Carpenter earned Big Ten Special Team's Player of the Week after connecting on all 4 field goal attempts in the Gophers’ 29-26 overtime loss to Penn State. The Ashwaubenon graduate has made his first 9 field goals to start the season. Brian Smith (Brookfield East) also had 7 catches and 101 yards for the Gophers. In other Big Ten action, former Beaver Dam standout R.J. Shelton had 141 receiving yards and 2 scores in Michigan State’s 24-21 loss to Indiana.

Former Whitefish Bay punter Colin Downing booted a career long 67 yard punt for Iowa State. That stands as the longest punt in the Big 12 this year. The University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Jester Weah had a career day in Pitt's 43-27 win over Marshall. The former Madison Memorial standout had 7 catches for 176 and one touchdown.

It appears a few NFL linebackers are getting more playing time as Joe Schobert (Waukesha West) and Nick Bellore (Whitefish Bay) each put up season highs. Each had five tackles, Schobert for the Cleveland Browns, and Bellore for the San Francisco 49ers.

In WIAC action, #2 UW-Whitewater and #8 UW-Platteville squared off for a close 30-24 contest that saw the Warhawks prevail. Manny Jones (Kenosha Indian Trail), Canton Larson (Oconomowoc), and Marcus Hudson (Delaven-Darien) combined for over 200 yards receiving and a touchdown each for Whitewater.

Devon Linzenmeyer (Ozaukee) rushed for 150 yards and 3 scores, while also recording a receiving touchdown for UW-Oshkosh to earn him WIAC Offensive Player of the Week. Peter Krien (Badger) and Robbie Flom (Somerset) were named Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week respectively. Krien had 8 tackles and 1 interception for UW-La Crosse, while Flom had 130 kickoff return yards for UW-River Falls.

In Midwest Conference play, a pair of defensive linemen had big days in Macalester College’s 16-8 win over Ripon. Liam Peebles (Appleton North) recorded 3 sacks for Macalester, while Vince Stensrud (Marksesan) had 3 sacks himself for Ripon.

In St. Norbert’s 35-21 win over Lake Forest College, multiple players made big plays. Tyler Jensen (Waunakee) had 6 tackles and 2 interceptions to earn him his second Midwest Conference Performer of the Week. Alex Macke (Appleton North) also recorded an interception, while Ryan Grandic (St. Mary’s Springs), Ben Kornowski (Green Bay Preble), Stuart Kwaterski (Notre Dame), and Will Utesch (Big Foot) each recorded a sack. Waukesha West’s Elijah Fort and Plymouth’s Samuel Stahling each recorded a touchdown.

Ashwaubenon’s former quarterback James Morgan got his first start for Bowling Green in their 28-25 loss to Eastern Michigan. He threw for 250 yards and a score.  Elsewhere in the MAC, Northern Illinois got their first win over Ball State, 31-24. Offensive lineman Josh Ruka (Greenfield), Levon Myers (Franklin), Jordan Steckler (Two Rivers), and Max Scharping (Green Bay Southwest) led the push up front en route to 355 rushing yards for the Huskies.

In Upper Iowa’s 59-41 loss to Southwest Minnesota State, Skylar Lehman (Clintonville) and David Esswein (Kiel) each put up big numbers receiving. Lehman had 12 catches for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns while Esswein recorded 6 catches for 73 yards and a score. Nick Corley (Nicolet) also had an interception for Upper Iowa. Cumberland alum Brady Rose went over 2,000 career receiving yards in Sioux Falls’ 35-20 win over Augustana. Anthony Carver (Milwaukee Lutheran) recorded his first career touchdown in St. Cloud State’s 28-7 win over the University of Mary.

In Missouri Valley play, Illinois State’s safeties Alec Kocour (Catholic Memorial) and Mitchell Brees (Greendale) continue to put up big numbers, combining for 21 tackles in Illinois State’s 31-10 loss to North Dakota State. Tight end Nate Jenson (Waupaca) had a receiving touchdown for the winning Bison. Also, former Madison Memorial wide receiver Daurice Fountain had 3 receiving touchdowns in Northern Iowa’s 42-21 win over Southern Illinois.
