WIAC announces Football All-Conference and Player of the Year Awards

University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Dan Arnold and UW-Whitewater’s Brandon Tamsett were named the Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, while UW-Platteville’s Quinn Buschbacher and UW-Stout’s Drew Pearson were selected Special Teams Co-Players of the Year to lead the individuals selected to the 2016 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Football Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-Whitewater head coach Kevin Bullis was chosen the George Chryst Coach of the Year.
 
Arnold claimed first team recognition for the second straight year and leads the conference with 1,108 receiving yards and 15 receiving touchdowns, while ranking second with 90 points scored and fourth with 1,173 all-purpose yards. He has produced at least 100 receiving yards in six games, including a season-high 213 yards against UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 5. Arnold has recorded a pair of touchdown catches in seven contests.
 
Tamsett collected first team honors for the second consecutive season. He is fourth in the WIAC with 10.5 tackles for loss and eighth with 4.5 quarterback sacks to lead a defensive unit that tops the league with 83.8 rushing yards per game. Tamsett has added 22 solo tackles, 14 assisted tackles and one forced fumble on the year.
 
Buschbacher leads the conference with 31.3 yards per kick return and is third with 1,266 all-purpose yards. He had a season-high 120 kick return yards against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 8 and season-best 60-yard return against UW-Stout on Oct. 29.
 
Pearson tops the league with 16 field goals made, while ranking fourth with 75 points scored. He successfully converted all 27 of his extra-point attempts and booted a season-long 52 yard field goal against Mayville State University (N.D.) on Sept. 17. Pearson also made a 51-yard field goal against UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 1. The 51- and 52-yard field goals are the longest in WIAC this year.
 
Repeat selections on the first team from a season ago included: UW-Oshkosh’s Reese Dziedzic, Johnny Eagan, Dylan Hecker and Branden Lloyd; UW-Platteville’s Brett Jerdee; UW-Stout’s Kane’ala Atchison-Keolanui; and UW-Whitewater’s Marcus Hudson and Tony Koepnick. UW-Oshkosh’s CJ Blackburn was a first team choice in 2014, while UW-River Falls’ Robbie Flom collected first team recognition in 2012.
 
Bullis captured the coaching honor after leading the Warhawks to a 10-0 regular-season record and the 35th WIAC championship in program history. UW-Whitewater also secured a spot in the NCAA Division III championship for the 14th time.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.

Scholar-Athlete Awards

University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Branden Lloyd and UW-Stevens Point’s Kyle Larson have been selected co-recipients of the 2016 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Football Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is sponsored by Badgerland Financial.
 
A senior from Mukwonago, Wis., Lloyd is majoring in kinesiology and owns a 3.55 grade point average. He was a semifinalist for the 2016 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award (William V. Campbell Trophy) and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Lloyd has been recognized on UW-Oshkosh’s Dean’s List.
 
He has received All-WIAC first team recognition the last two years and helped the Titans secure the WIAC championship in 2015, while advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III championship. Lloyd has played in 43 career games, including 33 as a starter with UW-Oshkosh compiling a 34-9 record.
 
He has volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh, Feeding America, Old Glory Honor Flight and Be The Match. Lloyd is currently serving as a strength & conditioning intern with UW-Oshkosh Intramurals.
 
Larson, a senior from Clayton, Wis., maintains a 3.99 grade point average and is majoring in pre-physical therapy. He was named to the NCAA Division III Academic All-District™ Six Football First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America for the second straight year earlier this season. A transfer from University of Minnesota-Crookston, Larson is a two-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and been named to UW-Stevens Point’s Dean’s List numerous semesters.
 
A team captain this year, he threw for a season-high 456 yards against UW-Stout on Nov. 5 and had five touchdown passes in three games. Larson received All-WIAC honorable mention recognition in 2015. 
 
A member of Sigma Mu Tau and UW-Stevens Point’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Larson has volunteered with food pantries, youth sports and highway cleanup efforts. He has served as a tutor on campus in human anatomy and physiology.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93. He oversaw the transition of the conference from NAIA to full NCAA membership. Sparger arrived at UW-Stout in 1959 and served the institution in a variety of capacities, including as an assistant football and basketball coach, head wrestling coach and head football coach. He served as UW-Stout's athletics director from 1969-71.
