Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

The Drake football has been mentioned in past editions of the Alumni Round-up and for good reason. Two wide receivers; Mitch McFarlane of Winnebago Lutheran, and Steven Doran of Germantown have been having great seasons catching the ball through 5 games. The duo combined for 12 catches, 160 yards and touchdown in Drake’s 27-16 win over Butler this past weekend. On the year, the tandem has nearly 40 catches, over 600 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Speaking of dominating duo, Illinois State’s Adam Conley (Franklin) and Ty DeForest (Marshall) continue to wreak havoc in their opponent’s backfields. The duo had a sack each for the second consecutive game, while DeForest forced a fumble and Conley recovered one in the team’s 24-13 win over Indiana State.

In other Missouri Valley Conference play, Sean McGuire (Franklin) threw for 441 yards and accounted for another 4 touchdowns in Western Illinois’ 38-33 loss to South Dakota. Also, former Madison Memorial standout Daurice Fountain hauled in 7 catches for 106 yards and a score for Northern Iowa in their 24-17 win over Southern Illinois.

Shelby Harris, an alumn of Homestead, has been making plays recently for the Denver Broncos defense, one of the NFL’s best. The defensive tackle recorded his second sack in as many games this past weekend in the Bronco’s 16-10 win over the Oakland Raiders.

Jake Rastas has been making the most of his past 3 starts for the University of North Dakota. The New Berlin Eisenhower grad had a game high 13 tackles (one for loss) in their 48-24 loss to UC Davis. The freshman linebacker has recorded 30 tackles in the last 3 games.

Plymouth graduate and current St. Norbert College wide receiver Samuel Stahling continued an impressive sophomore season this past weekend, hauling in 4 catches for 177 yards and 3 touchdowns in the team’s 61-17 win over Knox College. That performance earned Samuel the Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. His teammate Elijah Fort (Waukesha West) also had a monster day, racking up 176 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns; while hauling in a 44-yard receiving score.

Punter Dan Rothbauer had quite a busy day for Lawrence University, punting 13 times for over 520 yards against Monmouth College. The Appleton North product’s performance and ability to hold the opponent’s return average to 1.3 yards earned him Midwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors

The University of Pittsburgh got big production again from Madison Memorial graduate Jester Weah. The wideout had 137 receiving yards and a touchdown in the Panther’s 42-10 victory over Rice.

In WIAC play, UW-Oshkosh’s 37-20 victory over UW-Whitewater had numerous huge performances. Whitewater’s Drew Patterson and Tony Gumina, both from Sussex Hamilton, had rushing scores. On the other side of the ball, Oshkosh’s quarterback Brett Kasper (Two Rivers) threw for 339 yards and 3 scores while running back Dylan Hecker (Winneconne) rushed for 190 yards and one touchdown. Wideout Sam Mentkowski (Whitnall) had the biggest day of all, hauling in 10 catches for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns. This earned him WIAC’s Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Oconomowoc graduate Brandon McKandes started right where he left off last week, recording 3 more sacks for UW-La Crosse in their 35-13 win over UW-Stevens Point. He was named WIAC’s Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Teammates Zachary Zillmer (Black River Falls), Jacob Wudtke (Bonduel), and Reese Felton (Middleton) all recorded sacks as well.

In Northern Sun Conference highlights, three teams were led in the trenches by Wisconsin-bred offensive lineman to huge days on the ground. Firstly, Nick Zimmerman (Lacona), Elijah Perine (Homestead), and Nolan Kern (Regis) helped Sioux Falls rush for 274 yards in their 24-10 victory over Southwest Minnesota.

The Winona State rushing attack was led up front by T.J. Bartels (Franklin), Carter Berlin (Augusta), Colin Valley (Oconomowoc), and Jake Gronholz (Lakeside Lutheran) to 296 yards on the ground in their 37-7 win over Upper Iowa University.

Last, but surely not least, Sam Schrauth (St. Mary’s Springs), Evan Heim (De Pere), and Hunter Toppel (DeForest) helped Minnesota State-Mankato rush for an incredible 479 yards and 6 scores in their 47-10 win over Concordia St. Paul.
