Boys Basketball Alumni Round-up: January 31st

Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. Alumni Update

Riley LaChance had started 108 games coming into Vanderbilt’s game with #22 Tennessee last Tuesday. The Brookfield Central graduate notched 25 points in the 67-62 loss to the Volunteers. Saturday, in his 110th start, LaChance put up 24 points to help Vanderbilt to an 81-78 win over TCU. He has scored over 20 points in three straight games.

Bryce Nze had two big games in UW-Milwaukee’s wins over Youngstown State and Cleveland State this past week. Nze, an Arrowhead alumn had 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the 66-55 win over Youngstown State. He shot 7 of 8 from the field. He then had 18 points and 11 rebounds in the 70-47 victory over Cleveland State. Nze is fifth in the Horizon League in field goal percentage at 57.9%, and fourth in blocks per game at 1.3.

Milwaukee South High School graduate Malcolm Mabry has been a double-double machine for McKendree University. In their 86-56 loss to Southern Indiana on Saturday, Mabry had 11 points and 15 rebounds, recording his fifth double-double of the season. He currently is fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in rebounds per game at 9.6.

The WIAC currently has five teams ranked in the top 25 in Division 3 according to D3hoops.com. This past weekend saw many great games throughout the conference.

Leading off, Ben Boots (Kimberly) had 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals in UW-Oshkosh’s 68-53 win over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday. He then notched 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists in a 78-57 win over UW-River Falls on Saturday. For those two performances, Boots was recognized as the WIAC Player of the Week. He currently leads the WIAC in free throw percentage, assists per game, and assist/turnover ratio.

Previously unranked UW-Platteville got a big 84-67 win over then #8 UW-Whitewater on Wednesday. The Pioneers were led by Matt Oesterich (Marshfield), Carter Voelker (Kiel), and Clay Gerds (Fort Atkinson) as each scored in double figures.

Elsewhere in the WIAC, Milton Cummings (Wisconsin Lutheran) had 15 points and 10 rebounds in UW-La Crosse’s 59-57 win over UW-Stout Wednesday. That was Cummings first double-double of the season. Also, Canon O’Heron (Bangor) scored 26 points, while teammates MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells) and Nate Dodge (East Troy) each had 18 points in UW-Stevens Point’s 76-62 victory over La Crosse. The combo shot 21 of 32 from the field, and 12 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Kyle Monroe has been having a phenomenal season at Michigan Tech and this past week continued that greatness. The Ashwaubenon High School product had a career high 41 points and 8 rebounds in Tech’s 71-64 win over Davenport on Thursday. He shot 6 of 11 from the three. He then had 31 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in a 77-66 victory over Northern Michigan on Sunday. For his performance, he was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the fourth time this year.

Since Whitnall graduate Kevion Taylor got his first start for Winona State on January 5th, he has been playing tremendously. He has averaged 12 points and 5.9 rebounds per game and scored in double figures in 6 of those 8 games. He scored in double figures in each of Winona State’s victories over Minot State and the University of Mary this past weekend.

Chris Knight has done nothing but impress in his freshman season at Dartmouth University. The Madison Memorial alum has scored in double figures in 14 of the 17 games and is currently second in the Ivy League in field goal percentage. He scored 12 points in each of Dartmouth’s losses this past week.

Tristan Shoup had 15 points and 9 rebounds in Beloit College’s 80-71 loss to Ripon College on Wednesday. The Fort Atkinson grad then had 22 points and 11 rebounds in an 86-62 loss to Monmouth on Saturday. In that win for Ripon, Tyler Semanas (Laconia) had 27 points, while Trent Jones (Dodgeville) and Cal Schultz (Muskego) had 16 and 10 points respectively for Ripon. They shot a combined 20 of 30 (66.6%) from the field.

Paul Miller has been nothing short of spectacular for North Dakota State. The Kettle Moraine High School product continued his recent, and season tear by recording 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists in a 73-58 win over Omaha on Thursday. He then followed that up with a 26 point, 3 rebound, and 3 assist game in the 80-69 win over Western Illinois Saturday. That makes nine straight games that Miller has crossed the 20 point marker. In those 9 games, he is shooting 53% from the field.
