Boys Basketball Alumni Round-up: February 7th

Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. Alumni Update

Bryce Nze is having a stellar sophomore season for UW-Milwaukee. This past week may have been his best yet in his two young seasons. The Arrowhead High School graduate had 12 points and 12 rebounds in a 74-56 loss to UIC on Monday. He followed that up with a career high 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 76-58 win over UW-Green Bay on Friday. Nze shot 11 of 14 from the field in that game. He currently sits fourth in the Horizon League in field goal percentage at 59.4%.

UW-Stevens Point is in the drivers seat in the WIAC after this past week’s games as they beat UW-Whitewater 74-60 on Wednesday and UW-River Falls 66-64 on Saturday. In the Whitewater game, Canon O’Heron (Bangor), MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells), Drew Frederickson (Mount Horeb), and Mark Nelson all scored in double figures. O’Heron, Delmore, Frederickson, and Brandon Spray (Sauk Prairie) all scored in double figures in the River Falls game as well.

UW-Platteville took sole possession of 2nd place in the WIAC with a 68-62 win over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday. Matt Oesterich (Marshfield) led the way for the Pioneers with 15 points, while Jack Flynn (Appleton West) had 21 for the Tritons.

WIAC scoring leader George Diekelman continued to score in bunches for UW-Eau Claire. The Stevens Point High School alumn had 27 points in Eau Claire’s 77-68 win over UW-Stout on Wednesday and followed it up with 20 more in a close 77-72 loss to UW-Oshkosh Saturday. Teammate Clay Kujawa (Greendale) had a career high 15 points in the victory over Stout.

Garrison Goode, who was a part of two of the Dominican state winning teams, put up a career high 14 points this past weekend in an UC-Davis 105-104 overtime thriller over Long Beach State. That was Goode’s first ever double digit scoring output.

Isaiah Johnson of Whitefish Bay High School averaged 17 points and 5 rebounds in three games for Northern Michigan this past weekend. Johnson currently is fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring.

Luke Worthington put up a season high 16 points for BYU in their 68-60 loss to Gonzaga this past Saturday. The Homestead High School product shot 75% from the field in the loss.

Wauwatosa East graduate Jai’Vionne Green had 20 points and 10 rebounds in Bemidji State’s 91-70 win over Wayne State on Friday in Northern Sun Conference play. Green has scored in double digits in seven straight games, while this 20 and 10 output was his first double-double of the season.

In other Northern Sun play, Brandon Myer had 23 points and 9 rebounds in Minnesota Duluth’s 76-58 loss to Mankato Friday. He followed that up with a 21 point, 10 rebound performance in an 88-55 loss to Concordia on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the Northern Sun, Harrison Cleary of Oak Creek High School had 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals in Minnesota Crookston’s 70-60 win over Augustana Friday. Teammate Gable Smith (Lodi) had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and a whopping 8 blocks. Later in the week, Cleary scored 23 points and Smith gobbled up 5 more blocks in an 85-74 loss to Wayne State. Cleary currently leads the Northern Sun in scoring and 3 point percentage, while Smith leads the conference in blocks per game at nearly four.

A couple of Division 1 players continued to put big scoring outputs for their teams. Pius XI graduate Donovan Jackson had 25 points and 7 assists while shooting 6 of 10 from beyond the arc to help Iowa State upset West Virginia 93-77 Wednesday. Milwaukee Riverside alumn James Batemon recorded his tenth 20-point scoring game by posting 28 points in Loyola Marymount’s 76-69 win over BYU.

Adam Pohlman averaged 10 points and 7 assists in two losses for Lindenwood University this past weekend. The Neenah product current has the fourth best assist to turnover ratio in all of Division 2 basketball at 3.79.

Lastly, a pair of Midwest Conference players had stellar weeks. Tristan Shoup had 36 points in Beloit College’s 95-89 win over Lawrence University on Saturday. The Fort Atkinson alum shot 16 of 18 from the field.

Tyler Semenas had 27 points on 8 of 11 shooting for Ripon College in a 76-61 win over St. Norbert College on Friday. The Laconia High School grad followed it up by scoring 15 points and hauling in 10 rebounds in a 69-64 loss to Lake Forest College on Saturday.
