Bangor knocked off previously unbeaten Black Hawk, 39-29, to capture the Division 5 state championship, its first state title since 1997.

The Cardinals led 20-11 at the half. Black Hawk battled back to tie the game at 27 with 5:36 left, but Bangor was able to do enough to come away with the victory.

The play of senior and UW-Milwaukee recruit Emma Wittmershaus was key for the Cardinals down the stretch. She was hit some clutch free throws and was big on the defensive end of the floor.

Bangor won despite turning the ball over 28 times and shooting 13-for-29 from the free throw line.

Wittmershaus finished with a game-high 9 points and added 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals and an assist.

Senior Alea Fortier tallied 7 points for the Cardinals and fellow senior Jaclynn Freit finished with 5 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Black Hawk woeful shooting and foul trouble led them to losing their first game of the season.

The Warriors shot just 12 of 62 from the floor and made 3 of 31 three-pointers.

Sophomore Natalie Leuzinger fouled out with 3:04 left and freshman standout Bailey Butler fouled out at the 2:45 mark.

Bailey Butler and older sister Hannah Butler, a sophomore, each finished with 8 points to lead the Warriors.
