Sun Prairie, Whitnall, Poynette, Horicon, and McDonell Central claim softball state titles

The 2018 WIAA State Softball Championships wrapped up on Saturday. 

Sun Prairie completed a perfect 29-0 season by defeating Burlington, 7-1, in the Division 1 state championship game at Goodman Diamond in Madison. Maddie Gardner, a sophomore, picked up the win in the circle for the Cardinals, finishing with seven strikeouts and three walks. She also drove in a pair of runs in the title game. The Cardinals defeated Appleton North in a state quarterfinal, 8-4, on Thursday, and edged Menomonee Falls, 9-5, in 9-innings in a semifinal on Friday. Gardner finished with nine strikeouts in the Cardinals' win over Appleton North and eight strikeouts in their win over Menomonee Falls. Senior Skylar Muller finished with five RBI in their win over Appleton North and three RBI in the Cardinals' victory against Menomonee Falls. The state title is Sun Prairie's first in program history; the Cardinals made four previous trips to the state tournament. 

Whitnall (26-5) captured the Division 2 state title on Saturday, beating Mosinee 3-1 in the championship game. Haley Wynn, a junior, picked up the win for the Falcons; she allowed just two hits and stuck out three and walked two in the win. In a state semifinal, the Falcons edged Portage 2-1. Wynn allowed four hits and struck out seven in the victory. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. The state title is Whitnall's first in program history; the Falcons had two previous trips to the state tournament with their last coming in 1995. 

Poynette (24-1) defeated Tomahawk 2-0 to claim the Division 3 state title. Mattie Bredeson, a senior, allowed just one hit and tallied nine strikeouts with no walks in the victory. In a state semifinal, the Pumas topped Westfield 4-3 in 11-innings. Bredesen allowed four hits, tallied six strikeouts and walked just two in the victory. Sophomore Brianna Kowald went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs, including the game-winner on a wild pitch in the 11th inning. Poynette now has four state titles in program history; the Pumas have 10 state tournament appearances. 

Horicon (28-1) was crowned the Division 4 state champion on Saturday, cruising to an 11-0 win over Thorp in the title game. Sophomore Allison Tillema allowed just one hit and stuck out five, while walking two in the victory. In a state semifinal, they defeated top-ranked and previously unbeaten Pacelli, 5-0. Tillema twirled the 12th no-hitter in state softball history in the win. Horicon now has three state titles in seven state tournament appearances. 

McDonell Central (20-1) repeated as Division 5 state champions on Saturday. The Macks posted a 5-2 victory against Oakfield in the title game. Senior Megan Baier earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and striking out four with no walks. Fellow senior Abby Opsal went 2-for-3 with two RBI. McDonell Central defeated Blair-Taylor 2-0 in a state semifinal on Thursday. Baier struck out four in the win. The Macks have three state titles in six trips to the state tournament.
