Bay Port, Brookfield Central, Notre Dame, and Kenosha St. Joseph win girls soccer titles

DIVISION 1

Bay Port 3, Sheboygan North 1

Bay Port (24-1) captured the program’s first State championship with a 3-1 win over Sheboygan North in the Division 1 final at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates’ McKenzie Johnson scored the game’s first goal on a corner kick that hooked into the goal at the 21:59  mark of the first half. Bay Port increased their lead to 2-0 at 49:07 in the second half. Erica Hess blasted a unassisted shot from several yards beyond the top of penalty box to increase the Pirates’ lead. 

The Golden Raiders responded moments later to cut their deficit in half at 2-1. Hope Garbison scored off a rebound of a Maggie Mueller shot that deflected off the goalkeeper at 49:52.

Bay Port extended its lead to 3-1 on an unassisted goal by Emma Nagel at 81:20 to complete the scoring. 

Both teams put six shots on goal during the game. Hess led all attackers with four shots on goal for the Pirates. Moyer led the Golden Raiders with two shots on goal. 

Goalkeeper Gabby Noack was credited with the victory in goal for the Pirates, allowing one goal and making five saves. Meredith Opie made three saves and allowed three goals for the Golden Raiders.

The Pirates win the title in their fourth State appearance after placing runner-up a year ago. Sheboygan North (22-1-1) finishes runner-up in its first-ever State tournament appearance.

DIVISION 2

Brookfield Central 2, Oregon 0

Brookfield Central (18-1-1) won the Division 2 championship with a 1-0 victory over Oregon in the final of the  2018 State Girls Soccer Tournament Saturday at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park.

The Lancers broke a scoreless tie early in the second half. Jenny Cape knocked in a rebound to the lower left area of the goal to give Brookfield Central the only score they needed at 48:08. Emma Staszkiewicz was credited with an assist. Staszkiewicz provided an insurance goal later in the half at 77:22. She received the assist from Sarah Knopp and placed her shot from in front to the far right side of the goal. 

Brookfield Central outshot the Panthers 14-6, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Staszkiewicz recorded a game-high five shots on goals, and Cape added three shots on target. Hanna Rohrer led Oregon with two shots and one on goal.
Goalkeeper Maggie Doyle recorded three saves to protect the shutout for the Lancers. Melia Moyer allowed a pair of goals with seven saves in 79:52 for Oregon. Kelly Kubicek made one save in the final 10:08 of the game in relief of Moyer.

The Lancers, who won the Division 1 title a year ago, dropped down a division to win their second straight title and their sixth overall. They won four consecutive titles in Division 1 from 2002-05. Oregon (12-4-6) finishes runner-up in its third appearance in the title game and its fourth State tournament experience. The Panthers won the title in 2015 and runner-up were also runners-up in 2016.

DIVISION 3

Notre Dame 1, Catholic Memorial 0

Notre Dame (17-5-1) is the new champion in Division 3 by beating six-time defending champion Catholic Memorial 1-0 in the championship final at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park Saturday evening.

The Tritons scored the only goal of the game at the 13:12 mark of the first half. Jenna Cuene found the goal on a rebound off the Crusader goalkeepers’ save of a penalty kick by Trudy Quidzinski to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal surrendered by the Crusaders in the State tournament since the 2015 championship game, which includes a span of five games in the tournament.

Notre Dame controlled the tempo throughout the game. The Tritons stymied the Crusaders by not allowing a shot on goal and outshooting the former champions 8-0 in the game.

Alana Bergin had light work in goal for the Tritons. She was not required to make any stops in the game to get credit for the victory. Lili Berg had eight saves for the Crusaders and yielded one goal.

Cuene led the Tritons’ offensive attack with a goal on two shots on goal. Grace Shaw placed three shots on goal, and Quidzinski added a pair of shots. 

The Tritons win their first championship in five appearances in the State final and in their 11th experience in the tournament overall. Ten-time State champion Catholic Memorial (21-3-2) finishes runner-up in its 14th State tournament appearance.

DIVISION 4

Kenosha St. Joseph 2, Cedar Grove-Belgium 1

Kenosha St. Joseph (17-5-1) is the champion in Division 4 after downing Cedar Grove-Belgium 2-1 in the championship final at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park Saturday afternoon.

The game-winning goal came off the foot of Grace Pechous with under two minutes to play in the game. She tapped in a rebound in front of the net off the goalkeeper’s save of a Katherine Hamm shot from the side of the box. 

The Lancers scored first at the 5:40 mark of the first half. Margaret Del Fava redirected a corner kick by Elizabeth Alia into the net to give Kenosha St. Joseph an early 1-0 lead.

The Rockets tied the game at 1-1 at 60:52 in the second half. Jessica Rose intercepted a kick by the goalkeeper just outside the top of the penalty box and dished to Brittany Teunissen, who knocked the ball into an open net from the edge of the box. 

The Lancers placed six of their 11 shots on goal, while the Rockets had three of their 10 shots on goal. Del Fava led Kenosha St. Joseph with two shots on goal, and Rose had a team-leading two shots on goal for Cedar Grove-Belgium.

Elliana Mandli made a pair of saves and allowed one goal to get credit for the victory for the Lancers. The Rockets’ Brooke Braga made fours saves on the six shots on goal she faced.

The Lancers win the State championship in their first tournament appearance, and Cedar Grove-Belgium (16-2-1) finishes runner-up in its first experience at State.
