Amherst is the only defending champion ranked #1 to open the season

Week 1 WisSports.net Coaches Poll

Please note, divisional placement in our poll is based on our Enrollment Projections done earlier this year. Divisional placement in the WIAA playoffs is not determined until after the season and these projections can and will be different than the divisions at the end of the year. We have added an 8-Man Coaches Poll this season.

Division 1

Unless you've been living under a rock or following high school football for the first time, you know that Kimberly's 70-game winning streak came to an end on Friday at the hands of Fond du Lac, who got a game-winning 25-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the Papermakers 31-28. Fond du Lac opens as a unanimous #1 team in Division 1, while Kimberly is second. Appleton North, Muskego, and Franklin round out the top five. Last year's D1 runner-up Sun Prairie dropped a Big Eight game to Madison Memorial and is unranked, while Memorial begins at #9.

Division 2

Brookfield Central, last year's state runner-up, is a unanimous #1 selection in the first Division 2 Coaches Poll of the 2018 season. The team that beat them in the title game, Waunakee, is second. The rest of the top five consists of Homestead, Brookfield East, and Menasha. Kettle Moraine's big win over Waukesha West has the Lasers at #6 to begin the year.

Division 3

Catholic Memorial received all but one first place vote in the opening Division 3 Coaches Poll. Defending champion Rice Lake is second, while the 2017 runner-up New Berlin Eisenhower Lions are third, followed by Notre Dame and Greendale.

Division 4

The voting in Division 4 was spread across a number of schools, but Saint Croix Central gets a narrow edge at the top to begin the year. Defending champion Lodi, who beat SCC in overtime in the championship game last season, is second. Martin Luther, Bloomer, and Racine St. Catherine's round out the top five.

Division 5

Division 5 is one of the most interesting in the state, where three-time defending champion Amherst gets an early edge in the voting. Last year's D6 champ Saint Mary's Springs projects to Division 5 this season and is second, as the two teams will meet this week in a non-conference showdown. State runner-up Lake Country Lutheran, who returns a load of talent and would be considered #1 in many years, is third, while Spencer/Columbus Catholic is fourth after an impressive opening win over Stratford.

Division 6

With defending champion Saint Mary's Springs projected to move to Division 5, it's pretty open in Division 6. Last season's runner-up Iola-Scandinavia begins the year at #1, with Grantsburg, Regis, Abbotsford, and Racine Lutheran rounding out the top five of a jumbled Week 1 vote.

Division 7

Defending champion Bangor opened with a 14-0 win over Melrose-Mindoro, but it wasn't enough to impress the coaches, who narrowly have the Cardinals second behind state powerhouse Edgar. State runner-up Black Hawk is third.

8-Man Football

8-Man teams are eagerly anticipating the first official playoff tournament this year, and it will be fun to see how things play out. Luck has been the most consistent program in 8-Man and opens the year at #1. Newman Catholic is second, while Sevastopol, Northwood/Solon Springs, and Oakfield round out the top five.
