Looking Back

Luck got past Bruce 38-18 in a showdown of unbeaten Lakeland-8 South squads, as the Cardinals keep churning out big-time point and rushing totals.

In another match-up of undefeated squads, Newman Catholic had no problem with Gillett, beating the Tigers 47-6. Gillett running back Bo Krueger had 157 yards and a touchdown, but it was off the state-leading pace had posted so far this year. Newman did whatever they wanted offensively, producing 255 passing yards with four touchdowns through the air for Ben Bates while the rushing attack put up 219 yards. The top-ranked Cardinals averaged 13 yards per play, with six of their seven touchdowns going for at least 35 yards.

Wisconsin Heights and Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah were involved in a low-scoring affair, with Heights leading 6-0 at halftime and 14-8 into the fourth quarter before the Vanguards pulled away for a 28-14 victory.

Looking Ahead

It is a week filled with Friday games, as 14 are on the schedule for the traditional high school football day. In fact, it's the busiest Friday night schedule we'll have all year in 8-Man Football.

Gillett and Gibraltar are two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in MOLNPC-8 play, joined by Sevastopol. It will be an interesting game between eighth-ranked Gillett and fourth-ranked Gibraltar, with contrasting styles on offense. Gillett relies on the state's leading rusher, Bo Krueger, who is nearing 1000 yards already. Gibraltar's offense is spear-headed by quarterback Trevor Reinhardt and the passing attack.

The Great-8 Conference title is likely on the line when Wisconsin Heights travels to Oakfield. Heights has a non-league loss, while Oakfield is unbeaten on the season.

Star of the Week: Javaun Mielke, Oakfield

Oakfield jumped out to a 37-0 halftime lead before cruising home for a 51-12 victory over McDonell Central on Friday night. Sophomore Javaun Mielke had three scores before halftime, all from at least 50 yards. He opened things with a 50-yard touchdown just 23 seconds into the game. Mielke added a 70-yard punt return touchdown a few minutes later, returning another punt for a 64-yard score in the second period. He'd add another 52-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Mielke finished with 170 rushing yards on 15 carries, and 337 total yards.
