Air National Guard Level 1 Team of the Week Nominees:
Arrowhead - A dominating performance by Classic Eight teams in Level 1 was capped by a 63-21 road win by Arrowhead over Verona. Now sporting a seven-game winning streak, the Warhawks are suddenly one of the hottest teams in the state after starting the season 0-3. Arrowhead jumped out 21-0 on Verona in the first quarter, though it was a 28-14 game at halftime. The second half was even more domination, as the Warhawks scored early and often. Quarterback Nic Wohlfiel completed 7-of-9 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while Josh Nielsen ran for 213 yards and four scores.
Baldwin-Woodville - The sixth-seeded Blackhawks went up 3-0 on third-seeded host West Salem in the first quarter, but West Salem would take a 14-3 lead into the halftime break. The second half belonged to Baldwin-Woodville, however, as the team got a third quarter touchdown then a field goal early in the fourth quarter to tie the game before an Andrew Klopp touchdown run put the Blackhawks ahead for good at 21-14. Klopp finished with 156 yards on the ground in the contest.
Benton/Scales Mound (IL) - Benton/Scales Mound (IL) won its final regular season game over River Ridge to secure a spot in the playoffs, and the Zephyrs were handed a road game at Trailways-South co-champion Fall River, a state semi-finalist last year. After Fall River scored first in the first quarter, it was all Zephyrs, who put the final 35 points on the board in a 35-7 victory, the first postseason victory for the team since 2009.
Pewaukee - The Pirates finished a distant fourth in the Woodland-West this year but the team did win five straight games to close the season. We knew they could pose a difficult test for unbeaten Rock Valley Conference champion McFarland, but it looked like the host Spartans had things under control with a 21-7 halftime lead. McFarland's advantage remained into the fourth quarter, when Pewaukee got a Brady Solomon to T.J. Chadwick touchdown pass to pull within 21-14 early in the period. The Pirates had one more chance late, and capitalized when Solomon found Logan Dobberstein from 13-yards out with just 19 seconds remaining. Head coach Justin Friske chose to go for the win, and Josh Geisel got in on the two-point conversion run to give seventh-seeded Pewaukee the winning points in a 22-21 upset of second-seeded McFarland.
Saint Mary's Springs - The Ledgers team and community played with heavy hearts, as the team was informed during the day Friday that junior lineman Trent Schueffner died in a hunting accident earlier that morning. His family encouraged the game to go on, and Springs made a fitting tribute to their fallen friend, scoring 62 points to match Schueffner's #62 jersey. The Ledgers' 62-13 victory over Dominican sends the team on to Level 2 to face Omro.
