Wisconsin Sports Network and WisSports.net are happy to announce Kimberly's Cody Staerkel as the 2018 recipient of the Dave Krieg Award as the most outstanding senior quarterback in Wisconsin, part of the WSN Senior Football Awards.

Staerkel was recently named a First Team All-Conference selection in the VFA-North as well as the league's Player of the Year. Not bad for someone who did not see the field on varsity last season.

"Cody has shown tremendous growth as a player and as a person over the past year," head coach Steve Jones said. "He has played his best football in the biggest games and he has made some of his biggest throws in the most critical moments of the year."

As a senior he has thrown for 2,748 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 64.5% of his passes for a 132.1 quarterback rating as the Papermakers are back in a state final.

The 6'2" signal-caller was recently named a First Team All-State choice by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association.

Finalists for the award were Staerkel, Richie Gilles of Sun Prairie, Wes Glime of Notre Dame, Logan Graetz of River Falls, Carter Robinson of Appleton North, and Jarrett Wulf of Waunakee.

Past winners of the award include Oshkosh West's Trey Demler (2009), Franklin's Lance Baretz (2010), West De Pere's Jay Tollefson (2011), Watertown's Tarek Yaeggi (2012), Xavier's Matt Ferris (2013), Brown Deer's Zack Baun (2014), Amherst's Garrett Groshek (2015), Kimberly's Danny Vanden Boom (2016), and Franklin's Max Alba (2017).

The award is named after Dave Krieg, a graduate of D.C. Everest High School who went on to star at Milton College and later in the National Football League. Krieg ranks in the Top 12 in NFL history in career pass attempts, completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his 12-year career.
