The WSN 8-Man Football Awards were launched in 2016 to recognize the outstanding players participating in reduced player football. Awards presented will be Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. All players are eligible regardless of grade level.
Each year, a preseason Watch List will be produced, then narrowed down to five finalists to be announced the week prior to the 8-Man Jamboree. Winners will be announced the week following the 8-Man Jamboree.
These awards are not associated with any conference nor the WFCA awards, and are presented independently by WisSports.net.
Ben Bates of Newman Catholic has been selected as the 2018 8-Man Football Offensive Player of the Year by WisSports.net.
Just a junior, Bates has been extremely efficient and productive throwing the football this season. He completed 185 of 288 passes, good for a 64.2% completion percentage, for 3,040 yards and 40 touchdowns with just four interceptions.
He led 8-Man Football in passing yards and touchdowns, helping the Cardinals to the state semi-finals following an unbeaten regular season. Bates added 467 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground as well.
Bates threw for more than 225 yards in all but one game for the Cardinals this season, including two contests with a perfect passer rating. Twice he threw for six touchdowns with no interceptions.
Bates was recently named one of just three, 8-Man selections to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Small School All-State Team, the only choice on offense.
Other finalists for the award included Dennis Brule of Luck, Thomas Hoffman of Clayton, Trevor Reinhardt of Gibraltar, and Elliot Samuels of Newman Catholic.
