Iola-Scandinavia races to first state title in dominating fashion for Division 6 championship

Iola-Scandinavia's Carter Kurki had 88 yards of offense as the T-Birds claimed the Division 6 title

Iola-Scandinavia scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and had no problems in defeating Racine Lutheran 43-14 to claim the school's first-ever state championship This year's Division 6 crown is the first title for the T-Birds after three previous runner-up finishes.

Senior running back Bryce Huettner, who set the state's all-time career rushing record last week, pounded away with 32 carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns.

It was Huettner who opened the scoring, plunging in from a yard out on the team's first drive.

Alex Sharp added a nine-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter. A 21-yard touchdown pass from Connor Kurki to William Cady and a 29-yard scoring play from Connor Kurk to Carter Kurki gave Iola-Scandinavia a 29-0 halftime lead.

Huettner would add a couple more short touchdowns in the second half, and his eight-yard run with 6:47 left in the game set the running clock in motion.

Iola-Scandinavia finished with 386 yards of total offense in the game, with 282 coming on the ground.

Racine Lutheran junior running back Tyler Tenner had 126 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, though his lone score came in the closing minutes when the game was well out of reach.

Iola-Scandinavia takes home a gold ball after finishing as runner-up in 1999, 2007, and 2017.
