Each week WSN will take a look at the happenings in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, which includes many of the two-year campuses in the UW system. A look back at the big performances and news from the week before, a look ahead to some of the big games coming up, plus a Player of the Week will be featured.

Looking Back

It has been a bit of a slow start to the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference women's basketball season, with most teams getting in just three or four contests to this point.

As seems to be the case every year, there are some changes within the league. Richland returns to sponsoring a women's team, but Fox Valley (who canceled after just a few games last year) and Manitowoc have dropped their women's basketball programs. As a result, the the league is down to eight women's teams this year.

Marathon dominated the league the last couple years, and despite losing Morgan Rachu to Division 1 Iona, the Huskies are expected to be one of the better teams again this season. However, they already have one loss, albeit a non-conference game, as Marinette topped Marathon 73-46 last Wednesday.

Speaking of Marinette, they are 3-1 overall to begin the season, with the lone loss a defeat at the hands of out-of-state Bay College.

As mentioned, Richland is back to sponsoring a women's program this year under head coach Mike Benson, and the Roadrunners picked up their first victory in early November over Marshfield, 67-19.

Looking Ahead

There are a total of just six games over the next week, two coming tonight, two on Saturday, and two on Monday.

Fond du Lac is 1-0 to begin the year, and the Falcons welcome in Waukesha tonight. Richland makes the trek to Marathon, as the teams are still playing what are technically non-conference games.

Marathon returns to action on Saturday with a game at Marinette, which is a rematch from last week when Marinette became the first WCC team to defeat Marathon in several years.

WCC Women's Basketball Player of the Week: Sarah Petit, Marinette

Sarah Petit of Marinette had a big game last Wednesday to help the Buccaneers defeat Marathon, 73-46. She scored 12 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, and added four steals and four assists as well in the convincing victory.
