Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays.

Alumni Update

The alumni that move on to continue their careers after high school have in some way impacted the community they came from. Whether it be their play on the court, work in the community, or drive in the classroom, it takes a certain amount of dedication and talent to make it to the next level.

Kevon Looney was one of those students at Milwaukee Hamilton. This past week, Kevon scored a season high 14 points in the Golden State Warrior’s 128-111 win over the Atlanta Hawks. However, that wasn’t the highlight of the week. The Warriors were in Milwaukee Friday for a showdown with the Bucks, and beforehand Kevon paid a visit to his old high school with his new teammates. Milwaukee Hamilton retired Looney’s number 5 jersey in a special day for all involved.

In two different WIAC games this past week, UW-La Crosse had five former in-state athletes score in double digits in those wins. In an 86-77 win over Wartburg, Ben Meinholz (Marquette), Tanner Bruchs (Poynette), and Terek Neisham (Mount Horeb) all had more than 10 points. As UW-La Crosse beat Buena Vista 85-73, Meinholz, Taulvish McCray (Neenah), and Ethan Anderson (Black River Falls) all scored in double figures.

In other WIAC play, the conference’s leading scorer John Keefe continued to be an offensive terror for UW-Stout. The former Medford High School athlete had 24 points in a 96-94 win over Silver Lake College. John hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 10 seconds left on the clock to secure the win. He followed that up with a 30 point performance in a 101-90 loss to Crown College. Keefe recently eclipsed the 1,000 point career mark at UW-Stout.

Milwaukee Vincent’s Melvin Brown had 19 points in UW-Whitewater’s 68-63 win over Calvin College. He then followed that up with 29 points and 8 rebounds in a 101-97 win over Alma College. Teammates Malik Clements (Madison West), Derek Rongstad (Middleton) and Andre Brown (Kenosha Indian Trail) combined for 52 points.

A pair of 2018 recruits took home weekly honors in their respective conferences this past week.

Oshkosh North’s Tyrese Haliburten has been a game-changer for the Iowa State Cyclones. Sunday in a 101-65 win over Southern, Tyrese had 15 points and a school record 17 assists. He was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. Tyrese currently leads the conference in steals per game (2.3), assist to turnover ratio (5.1), and is second in assists per game (4.6).

Fellow two-time all state selectee Joey Hauser was a key piece to Marquette claiming bragging rights in the in-state rivalry with Wisconsin. Joey had 15 points while older brother and fellow Stevens Point grad Sam had 13 points and 14 rebounds in the Golden Eagles 74-69 win over the Badgers. Joey was named the Big East Freshman of the Week.

Division 1 basketball wasn’t the only place where player of the week honors were being handed out to Badger state alumni.

Harrison Cleary has been an absolute scoring machine in his three seasons at Minnesota Crookston. In a 108-88 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead, Cleary notched a career high 47 points while shooting 7 of 8 from beyond the arc. He followed that up with 25 points in an 88-75 loss to Northern State. For his scoring tear and shooting display, Cleary, an Oak Creek grad, was named the Northern Sun-North’s Player of the Week.

Joe Sherburne is having a great senior season for UMBC thus far. The Whitefish Bay graduate had a game high 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in the team’s 71-60 win over Coppin State. Joe is first in the America East Conference in three point shooting percentage (50%), second in overall shooting percentage (55%), and leads UMBC in scoring at 13.9 points per game.

Tyrese Pinson (Racine Case) and Logan Hamilton (Sheboygan South) were phenomenal this past week for Marian University despite two losses. In an 115-110 loss to Rockford, Pinson had 31 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals while Hamilton hauled in 18 points and 11 rebounds. In the following 73-69 loss to Lakeland, Tyrese scored another 20 points, while Logan collected another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Lindenwood has had many in-state alumni play for its team throughout the years. This season, like last, a few are standing out from the pack. Brad Newman of Brookfield Central had 30 points and 5 rebounds in Lindenwood’s 75-58 win over Missouri Western. Teammate and West De Pere grad Chandler Diekvoss had 18 points and 6 rebounds in the win.

Keshawn Justice is another player from the 2018 class making his name at the collegiate level. The Madison East graduate had 12 points and 4 rebounds in Santa Clara’s 68-66 loss to Idaho State. Justice followed that up with 16 points and 3 rebounds off the bench in an 82-54 win over Sonoma State.

Lastly, Michigan Tech is scattered with former Wisconsin High School players across its roster. Owen White is beginning to take advantage of more playing time for the team. White had scored in double digits in both of Michigan Tech’s victories this past week. He has now scored in double digits in four of the teams last five games.
