Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. As 2018 has ended and we enter a new year, the accomplishments of former Wisconsin prep girls basketball players continues to grow throughout college basketball.

One of those players that started the new year out with a conference player of the week recognition is Youngstown State’s Chelsea Olson. Olson, a Westby High School grad averaged 15 points, 5 assists, and 9 rebounds over a four game stretch for Youngstown State. She recorded two double-doubles in those games as well. Chelsea was named the Horizon League Conference Player of the Week for the week of December 31st.

Another alumni received Horizon League recognition over the holiday season and that was Savanna Crockett. The former Milwaukee Vincent standout had 10 points and 14 rebounds in Cleveland State’s 67-65 loss to Bradley. Crockett followed that up with 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 64-62 win over Oakland. She hit two free throws with two seconds left in the game to give Cleveland State the win. Savanna was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week in back to back weeks.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has many former alumni filling many teams rosters throughout. Hannah Hobson of Stoughton is one of those making her mark for Michigan Tech. In a 66-57 win over Minnesota Duluth, Hannah had 19 points and 10 rebounds to help lead her team to victory. Hobson was named the GLIAC-North Player of the Week for her effort.

In other GLIAC action, Hannah Settingsgaard had a season high 30 points as Saginaw Valley State lost to Florida Southern 91-65. The former Oak Creek standout shot 10 of 16 from the field in the loss.

Former Green Bay Southwest star Natisha Hiedeman joined teammate Allazia Blockton (Dominican) in the 1,500 point club this past week in an 85-46 win over Providence. Natisha had 25 points and 8 rebounds in the win. She currently is third in the Big East Conference in scoring (16.1 ppg) and second in assists per game (5.57).

Shoreland Lutheran’s Ellie Harmeyer has put together a great career at Belmont University. In two games this past week, Ellie recorded double-doubles in both. She had 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-55 win over Arkansas State. She then followed that up with a 20 point, 10 rebound performance in an 84-76 loss to highly ranked Tennessee.

Kelsey Bakken stuffed the stat sheet for UW-Eau Claire in their 71-60 victory over St. Norbert College. Bakken, a Marshall alum, had 22 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals in the win. She followed that up with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals in a 76-40 victory over Beloit College. Kelsey was named the WIAC Player of the Week for her stat sheet-filling week.

In other WIAC play, a pair of UW-Stout athletes crossed a career milestone in the same game, an 86-80 overtime win loss to UW-Superior. Bailey Diersen of Fox Valley Luthern, and Kyncaide Diedrich of Athens, both scored over 20 points in the close loss for Stout. In doing so, both Diersen and Diedrich surpassed the 1,000 point mark in their collegiate careers.

Diersen and Diedrich weren’t the only girls to cross the 1,000 point mark over the holiday season. Chloe Wanink was nothing but efficient as she helped Wofford beat Brevard College 106-52. In only 12 minutes of play, the former Cameron High School standout had a whopping 31 points. She shot 13 of 15 from the field. The following game, Chloe surpassed the 1,000 point mark in her career.

Taylor Higginbotham had quite the week for Western Illinois as they picked up two victories and a loss. In an 84-72 loss to UTEP, Taylor, a Germantown grad, had a game high 24 points. She then had 16 points and 12 rebounds as Western Illinois beat Furman 85-78. She finished up the holiday season by scoring 23 points and hauling in 17 rebounds in an 87-78 win over Denver. Taylor was named the Summit League Player of the Week for her play.

A week after setting the Mid-American scoring record for points in a game (52), Mikayla Voigt was back at it for Northern Illinois. The Kettle Moraine Lutheran alum had a game high 25 points and 9 rebounds as NIU beat Eastern Illinois 78-59. She then had 29 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists in an 114-52 win over Chicago State. Teammate Ally May (Arrowhead) had 12 points. Mikayla then upped herself again as she had 36 points and 10 rebounds in a 109-102 double overtime victory over Brown. Voigt had 15 of her points in the overtime periods. May contributed 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Huskies.

In other Mid-American action, Jasmin Simz had a pair of good games for Ball State in their victories. The former Wausau West standout had 17 points and 9 rebounds in a 90-51 win over Tennessee State. She followed that up by scoring a season high 22 points in a 99-62 win over Urbana College.

It goes without saying that Megan Gustafson in a generational talent at Iowa. Already this year she has passed the 2,000 point and 1,000 rebound mark in her illustrious career. This past week saw her accomplish another feat. The former South Shore and Miss Wisconsin recipient had a season high 44 points and 14 rebounds in a 91-82 win over Drake. She was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the 16th time in her career for that performance. The next week, she had 30 points and 14 rebounds in an 84-70 loss to Michigan State. In the defeat, Megan became the all-time leading scorer in Iowa basketball history, boys or girls.
