Updated Football State Record Book following 2018 season

Iola-Scandinavia's Bryce Huettner became the state's all-time leading rusher this season

The 2018 high school football season was another one for the record books, as a number of players and teams etched their names in history.

Kevin Patrowsky keeps the State Record Book for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and has provided an updated 64-page document that is chock full of great information. Also, he's again added on to the 8-Man Football Record Book. For an updates, additions, or corrections to the Record Book, please contact Kevin Patrowsky.

Below are some of the noteworthy additions to the Record Book from 2018.

2018 Additions to 11-Man State Record Book

Passing Updates

  • Mount Horeb/Barneveld's Ethan Post threw for 471 yards in a win over Beaver Dam, placing him in the top 30 for single-game passing yards.
  • Eau Claire Memorial's Bryson Johnson tied a state record (along with three others) with eight touchdown passes, though it came in a loss to Chippewa Falls.
  • Lake Mills' Adam Moen threw for seven touchdown passes in a game, tying him with more than a dozen others for fifth on the state list.
  • While there were no 3000-yard passers this year, Kimberly's Cody Staerkel nudged his way into the top 30 for single-season passing yards with 2,932.
  • River Falls' Logan Graetz placed in the top 30 for single-season touchdown passes with 32.

Rushing Updates

  • Undoubtedly the biggest news was Iola-Scandinavia's Bryce Huettner taking over the state's career rushing record, finishing with 6,870 yards, displacing Hilbert's Mike Firkus (2000-02), who had 6,707 yards.
  • Huettner wasn't the only player to make a dent on the career rushing list, as Pulaski's Dylan Hendricks moved into the fourth spot with 6,359 yards. He also set a new state record for career rushing attempts with 926.
  • Darios Crawley-Reid of Martin Luther is 21st in career rushing yards with 5,356, while Southern Door's Derik LeCaptain is 28th with 5,199.
  • On the single-season rushing list, Hendricks is now fifth, as he finished his senior year with 2,831 yards. Huettner's senior campaign placed him 19th with 2,612 yards. He had 2,830 as a junior, which is sixth.

Receiving Updates

  • Mount Horeb Barneveld's Cade Lee caught just six passes in a win over Beaver Dam but they went for 268 yards, tied for twelfth on the single-game receiving yardage list.
  • Fox Valley Lutheran's Jacob Ulman hauled in 86 receptions, tying for 17th on the single-season list.
  • Chimere Dike of Waukesha North is 24th with 79 receptions, all coming in the regular season as the Northstars missed the playoffs.
  • Waukesha West's Trae Tetzlaff is in the top 30 for single-season receiving yards with 1,236.
  • Jared Creen of River Falls caught 18 touchdown passes, tying him with nearly a dozen others for 17th place on the single-season list.

Scoring Updates

  • Abbotsford's Joe Aguilera came within a touchdown of breaking the single-season scoring record in Wisconsin. He finished with 40 touchdowns, kicked 67 extra points, and connected on a pair of field goals for 313 points. That's just four behind record-holder Luke Hagel of Random Lake, who scored 317 in 1997.
  • Bryce Huettner of Iola-Scandinavia and Colby Argall of Black Hawk also moved into the top 50 in single-season scoring.
  • Martin Luther's Darios Crawley-Reid had a combined 99 touchdowns in his career, and his career point total of 594 is fifth. 
  • Others to move into the top 40 for career scoring include Southern Door's Derik LeCaptain, Iola-Scandinavia's Bryce Huettner, Grantsburg's Leo Chenal, Black Hawk's Colby Argall, Abbotsford's Joe Aguilera, and Pulaski's Dylan Hendricks.

Kicking Updates

  • West De Pere's Sawyer Grovogel connected on 76-of-77 extra point attempts, placing him in a tie for third for most made extra points. He is in fourth for most points as a kicker with 94.
  • Bay Port's Austin Hein and Abbotsford's Joe Aguilera are also in the top 25 for made extra points in a season.
  • Onalaska's Kaley Manglitz moved into 11th place with 145 career made extra points. She joins Lodi's Savannah Curtis (who is in the record books four times) as the only females to appear in the WFCA Record Book.
  • Aguilera is in the top 30 for career extra points as well, while a trio of players coming back next year also make the list: Lourdes' Tyler Johnsen, West De Pere's Sawyer Grovogel, and Springs' Levi Poss.

Punting Updates

  • Saint Croix Central's Derek Myer tie the state record for highest punting average (minimum 20 punts) at 46.2 yards per punt.

Team Updates

  • Eau Claire Memorial and Chippewa Falls played a double overtime game that ended 67-65 in favor of ChiHi, tying for third for most combined points in a game with 132. The 65 points for Eau Claire Memorial is the second-most for a losing team in state history. The teams combined for 1,193 yards, which is the sixth most in state history.

2018 Additions to 8-Player State Record Book

With the current incarnation of 8-Player Football still being very young, there were a significant number of additions to the Record Book this season.

Newman Catholic's Ben Bates etched his name in several places, including as the top single-season passer in 8-Player history, throwing for 3,040 yards. He's also second in passing touchdowns with 40. 

Gibraltar quarterback Trevor Reinhardt became the new career passing yardage record-holder with 4,916. Bates is likely to break that next year, as he's only 116 yards behind, and Bates also has the record for career touchdown passes with 67.

Siren's Derek Highstrom set a new 8-player record with 14 receptions in a game and six receiving touchdowns in a game. 

Elliot Samuels of Newman Catholic became the new record-holder for receptions in a season with 80, while Port Edwards' Addison Gibbs now holds single-season records for receiving yards (1,585) and touchdowns (19).

Alex Laughlin of Gibraltar just wrapped up his sophomore season but already holds the 8-Player state record for career receptions (100) and receiving yards (2,025).
