Each week WSN will take a look at the happenings in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, which includes many of the two-year campuses in the UW system. A look back at the big performances and news from the week before, a look ahead to some of the big games coming up, plus a Player of the Week will be featured.

Looking Back

Teams got back in the swing of things following the holiday break with a jamboree of sorts, held at UW-Baraboo and the JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Marinette showed why it is on top of the East Division through the first portion of the year with a dominating 86-58 victory over Rock in a non-conference contest.

Marathon and Sheboygan each won two games, playing both Friday and Saturday. It was a couple of very competitive games for Marathon, who got past Washington 83-73 on Friday as five players hit double-figures. On Saturday, the Huskies had to go to overtime to edge out Waukesha, 73-70, with five players again scoring at least ten points (seven scored at least nine).

Sheboygan had a bit easier time at the event, posting a pair of dominating victories over Baraboo and Marshfield. Dylan Martens continued to dominate, more on him a bit later.

Looking Ahead

East Division-leading Marinette looks to continue its strong season with a pair of road games, first at Marshfield this evening and then at Barron on Saturday. They are quite lengthy trips, but the Buccaneers have won eight straight games, including four consecutive on the road.

Marathon has a pair of home games, as the Husies welcome in Fond du Lac this week before a stiff test against Sheboygan on Saturday. Marathon currently sits a half game behind Richland in the West Division standings.

Waukesha has dropped three of its last four games, but the Cougars have a chance to get back on track with three contests in the next four days. Waukesha plays at Rock tonight, against the Concordia JV on Thursday, and at Baraboo on Saturday.

WCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week: Dylan Martens, Sheboygan

The second Player of the Week honor for Martens (Sheboygan South), who continues to dominate the opposition as the most improved player in the league. His scoring average has increased from 6.6 per game in his first year to 22.8 this season. Last Friday, he poured in a career-high 46 points to go along with 11 rebounds as the Wombats hammered Baraboo, 88-57. The next day he had 27 points and 16 rebounds to help Sheboygan past Marshfield by a 74-40 final.
