Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

This collegiate girls basketball season has been filled with milestones set, records broken, and all-time performances. All this, and we haven’t even gotten into February yet! This week was much like the past weeks for alumni around the country.

Kayla Goth has been mentioned in past iterations of the alumni round-up, but this week Kayla surpassed a career milestone for Kansas State. In a 96-58 loss to Iowa State, the former DeForest standout had 17 points and 10 assists despite the losing effort. In the following 86-56 win over Oklahoma, Goth had 16 points and 5 rebounds. With those 16 points, Kayla has surpassed 1,000 career points in her time at Kansas State.

A week after both Bailey Diersen of Fox Valley Lutheran, and Kyncaide Diedrich of Athens crossed the 1,000 point mark, the duo was at it again for UW-Stout. In a 73-65 win over UW-La Crosse, the duo both scored over 20 points each to continue their scoring ways.

Bailee Collins had a career day as UW-Stevens Point beat UW-River Falls 67-62 in WIAC action. Collins, a Milton grad, scored a career high 30 points while hauling in 11 rebounds. Bailee shot an incredible 22 free throws and knocked down 16 of them.

We can’t mention the WIAC without its player of the week recipient. Kelsey Bakken of UW-Eau Claire won the award for the second consecutive week after leading the Bluegolds to a pair of wins. In a 64-55 win over UW-River Falls, the former Marshall High School athlete, had 20 points and 8 rebounds. She followed that up with a 22 point, 11 rebound performance in an 85-68 win over UW-Whitewater.

Speaking of multiple player of the week winners, Megan Gustafson of Iowa is at it again. The former South Shore standout, and 2014-15 WSN Post Award winner, tallied her NCAA-leading twelfth double-double of the year in a 77-71 win over Nebraska. Megan had 28 points, 17 rebounds, and 5 blocks en route to being named Big Ten Player of the Week for the seventh time in nine weeks. On the other bench, Hannah Whitish (Barneveld) had 14 points for Nebraska.

Chelsea Brackman had a double-double of epic proportions as Bradley lost to Northern Iowa 81-78. Despite the loss, the New Berlin Eisenhower grad had a season high 22 points and an astounding 24 rebounds.

Speaking of double-doubles, Elllie Harmeyer scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds as Belmont beat Jacksonville State 66-52. The Shoreland Lutheran grad followed that up with 22 points and 9 rebounds in a 77-72 loss to Tennessee Tech. She is Belmont’s leading scorer and fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference, with 15.5 points per game.

Seeing as double-doubles seem to be the trend, Jessica Kelliher had a game high 27 points and 10 rebounds as Lewis College beat Truman State 86-56. The Waukesha North grad has already surpassed the 2,000 point mark in her college career and could very well tally 1,000 points by the end of this season.

Sticking with our theme, Ally May has been thriving lately for Northern Illinois. In a 109-102 double-overtime win over Brown, May, an Arrowhead alum, had 16 points and 17 rebounds. Teammate Mikayla Voigt of Kettle Moraine Lutheran, had 36 points and 10 rebounds. Voigt scored 15 of her points in the overtime periods. May then had 10 points and 11 rebounds in an 82-71 win over Miami Ohio.

Another pair of Division 1 teammates had double-doubles in the same game, this time for Cleveland State. Savanna Crockett of Milwaukee Vincent, and Mariah Miller of Brookfield East each hauled in 15 rebounds and 10 and 15 points respectively in a 71-53 win over UIC.

In other Horizon League play, UW-Green Bay scored an 81-61 win over Northern Kentucky behind the play of a trio of in-state alumni. Jen Wellnitz (Black Hawk), Laken James (Oconto), and Carly Mohns (Brodhead) combined for 52 points, 16 rebounds, and 13 assists.

Madison East alum Erin Howard didn’t put up a double-double this week for Auburn. However, the former two-time All State performer did get her first career start for the War Eagles in a 78-69 loss to Tennessee. Erin tallied 11 points and 4 rebounds in the game.

Kari Clements had a career day as Minot State beat Minnesota State-Mankato 93-87. The former Wilmot standout had a career high 34 points while adding 5 steals in the Northern Sun win.

In a previous game for Minnesota State-Mankato, a trio of players scored in double digits as they beat Mary 85-71. Taylor Drost (DSHA), Monica Muth (Cambridge), and Tayla Stuttley (Onalaska) combined for 38 points in the win.

In other Northern Sun play, Mallie Doucette had a game high 23 points and 8 rebounds as St. Cloud State beat Minnesota Crookston 68-58. The Colfax alum was joined in double digit scoring by Eau Claire North’s Nikki Kilboten, who added 12 points.

Without the school’s all-time leading scorer and former Dominican standout, Allazia Blockton, Marquette was led to two victories behind a pair of 1,000 point scorers and former Wisconsin High School athletes. Natisha Hiedeman of Green Bay Southwest and Amani Wilborn of Milwaukee Riverside combined for 31 points and 10 assists in Marquette’s 85-67 wino ver Creighton. Hiedeman then had 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 96-63 win over DePaul. Wilborn added 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in the win. Hiedeman was named the Big East Player of the Week for her stellar play.
