Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays.

Alumni Update

As we are now in mid-January, most colleges around the nation are in the first run of games versus conference opponents. Therefore we are beginning to see many alumni shine in big moments and rivalry games.

None may have shone quite like former Mr. Wisconsin Sam Hauser. In what might be the best college game to date, the former Stevens Point standout was right in the middle of the madness as Marquette beat Creighton 106-104 in an overtime thriller. With .08 second on the clock in regulation, and Marquette down three, Sam received a high in-bounds pass, landed, and hit an incredible three point shot to force overtime. On the game, Sam had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Later in the week, in a 70-66 win over Seton Hall, Sam recorded 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Sam became the 50th member of the 1,000 point club at Marquette.

In Northern Sun action, two teams who have been highlighted multiple times, continued to get great contributions from former alumni.

Minneosta-Duluth came up just short in a 100-98 game to the University of Mary. That was not due to former Superior grad Brandon Myer. Myer had a game high 31 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Logan Rohrscheib of Regis High School added another 20 points while Neenah’s Trevor Entwisle had 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 13 assists. Myer then had 25 points and 5 rebounds in 77-70 win over Minot State.

Kevion Taylor is having a superb sophomore season with Winona State. The former Whitnall standout had 23 points and 4 boards in a 92-79 loss to Wayne State. Teammates Caleb Wagner (Muskego) and Mason Domask (Waupun) each scored in double figures in the loss. Taylor and Wagner then combined for 31 points in an 87-67 win over Augustana.

Taylor’s teammate at Whitnall, Tyler Hero has been putting together quite an impressive freshman season at Kentucky. Hero had a team high 21 points, while adding 5 rebounds in Kentucky’s 85-74 win over Texas A&M.

The NACC was loaded with noteworthy performances from alumni across the conference. Slinger’s Josh Hau put together three, 20 point games for Concordia-Wisconsin. Hau scored 21 points in a 92-52 win over Dominican while teammates Jake Jurss (Sheboygan Lutheran), Joey Zietlow (Oak Creek), and Brandon Keller (Plymouth) all scored in double figures. Hau, Jurrs, Jordan Johnson (Cedarburg), and Noah Gosse (Green Bay NEW Lutheran) all scored over ten points in an 88-78 win over Concordia-Chicago. Finally, Hau had 21 points while Johnson added 14 in an 81-76 loss to Aurora.

Eric Nygaard (Plymouth), Zach Hasenstein (Sheboygan North), and Pat McDonald (Port Washington) combined for 40 points in Lakeland’s 82-72 loss to MSOE. The trio also combined for 58 points in a 106-95 loss to Edgewood College earlier in the week.

In Edgewood’s win over Lakeland, Jake Negus of Janesville Craig had 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Ben Seefeld (Arrowhead), Sy Staver (Mineral Point), and Emil Radisevic (Brookfield Central) all scored in double figures in the win. Negus then had 28 points while Seefeld added 20 as Edgewood beat Benedictine 75-63. Jake was named the NACC Player of the Week as he guided Edgewood to a pair of victories.

Racine Case’s all-time leading scorer Koreem Ozier has definitely made a big impact for Sacred Heart so far in his freshman season. After serving a suspension early on in the season for a violation of team rules, Ozier has begun to hit his stride again. He tallied 19 points in a 76-73 loss to Wagner and followed that up with 16 points in a 98-70 win over Bryant. Koreem currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 18 points a game.

The WIAC was full of drama this weekend as UW-Platteville pulled off a last second 75-72 win over UW-Stout. Valders High School’s Kyle Tuma hit the game winning three pointer to capture victory for the Pioneers. Teammate Carter Voelker (Kiel) had a team high 26 points and 6 rebounds. Voelker also hit a game-tying three pointer with twelve seconds left in regulation to help set up the shot for Tuma. Earlier in the week, Carter had 17 points and 12 rebounds in a 74-64 win over UW-River Falls.

In other WIAC play, Ben Meinholz recorded a pair of 20 point games as UW-La Crosse secured two victories to begin WIAC play 4-0. The Marquette High School grad had 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals in a 58-39 win over UW-Eau Claire. He then had 23 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals in a 75-60 win over UW-Whitewater. Ben was named the WIAC Player of the Week for his offensive outbursts.

In a West Coach Conference matchup where BYU beat Santa Clara 80-74, a pair of former Wisconsin high school standouts had season highs. Luke Worthington of Homestead shot 5 of 6 from the field and scored a season high 13 points for BYU. Madison East’s Keshawan Justice also shot 5 of 6 from the field as he had a season high 17 points for Santa Clara.

Ripon College was once again led to a pair of victories by a plethora of former Badger State alumni. Ryan Steffes of New Holstein had a season high 39 points, shooting 9 of 13 from three, in a 94-69 win over Cornell College. Trent Jones (Dodgeville), Kyle Rutkowski (Evansville), Cal Schultz (Muskego), and Tyson Tully (Reedsburg) combined for 51 points and 23 rebounds. Tully then had a game high 25 points in a 108-64 win over Lawrence University. Schultz, Steffes, and Beau Cary (Big Foot) all scored in double figures for the Red Hawks as well.
