Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

I’ve stated this many times over the past few months, but the talent coming out of the state of Wisconsin in girls basketball is at an extreme high and just getting better.

Cameron High School’s Chloe Wanink has been a prime example of the talent coming out of the state. In Wofford’s 91-65 win over Western Carolina, Chloe had a season high 40 points in just 25 minutes of play. She was an efficient 17 of 25 from the field. She followed that up with 28 points in 29 minutes in a 93-66 win over UNC-Greensboro. For her extremely efficient week, Chloe was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week. On the season, she leads the Southern Conference in points per game (19.5) and three-point percentage (40.6%).

The Northern Sun Conference named its players of the week and an alum was mentioned as a winner. Sammy Kozlowski of New Berlin Eisenhower had a big week to help Minnesota-Duluth to two victories. She started with 26 points and 8 steals in a 78-71 win over the University of Mary. She followed that up with 9 points and 8 rebounds in a 79-51 win over Minot State. She was named the NSIC-North Player of the Week. Sammy is sixth in the conference in assists (3.3) and leads the league in steals per game (3.1).

Elsewhere in the Northern Sun, Mallie Doucette got to the free throw line often for St. Cloud State in its two victories last week. The Colfax High School grad had 14 points in a 67-60 win over Minot State as she shot 9 of 10 from the charity stripe. Mallie then had 24 points on 12 of 12 shooting from the free throw line in an 83-70 win over the University of Mary.

Sidney Cooks had a career day as Michigan State beat Minnesota 86-68. The former Kenosha St. Joseph grad, and 2017 Miss Wisconsin, had a career high 21 points in only 22 minutes of play. Sidney added 3 blocks and 3 rebounds in the win.

2016-17 WSN Point Guard award winner, and Beaver Dam alum Cassidy Trotter had 18 points as Michigan Tech beat Ferris State 72-37. Abbie Botz (Little Chute), Hannah Hobson (Stoughton), and Elizabeth Kelliher (Waukesha North) join Trotter in the starting lineup and combined for 34 points in the GLIAC win.

In other GLIAC play, Daniell Nennig of Wrightstown recorded a career high 33 points in Purdue Northwest’s 76-67 loss to Wayne State. Danielle was 13 of 18 from the field while adding 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 blocks.

Cal Baptist’s Caitlyn Harper scored in double figures in both their games this past week. Harper, an Arrowhead grad, has scored in double figures in four of the last five games while shooting 51% from the field during that stretch.

UW-La Crosse has been aided to a 15-1 record and sits atop the WIAC standings due in large part to a number of alumni on its roster. Eamma Gamoke of Onalaska and Delaney Schoenenberg of Janesville Craig combined for 31 points in a 72-62 win over UW-Eau Claire. Gamoke, Shoenenberg, Carly Couthart (Sun Prairie) and Lexie Higgins (D.C. Everest) all start for the first place Eagles.

Elsewhere across the WIAC, Olivia Freckmann recorded a pair of double-doubles despite UW-Whitewater dropping both games. Freckmann, a Pius XI grad, had 10 points and 12 rebounds as the Warhawks fell to UW-Stout 78-68. She followed that up with 11 points and 17 rebounds in a 60-49 loss to the aforementioned first place UW-La Crosse team.

Chelsea Brackmann continued to play well for Bradley in a pair of wins. Brackmann, a New Berlin Eisenhower alum, had 15 points and 5 rebounds in a 75-68 win over Evansville. She followed that up with 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 61-45 win over Indiana State. Chelseas shot a combined 17 of 24 (71%) from the field.

Abby Monis came one rebound short of joining Freckmann with two double-doubles this past week. The Lakeside Lutheran alum had 13 points and 9 rebounds as Maryville topped McKendree 76-67. She then had 11 points and 12 rebounds in an 80-66 win over Illinois Springfield.

In another Great Lakes Valley game, Gabby Green of Pius XI had a team high 22 points and 4 steals as Lewis College fell to Drury 69-66. Teammate Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha North) added 19 points and 7 rebounds.

Arika Ogunbowale moved up the scoring ranks in Notre Dame history this past week as she had 30 points in an 82-68 win over Louisville. The DSHA standout is currently third in program history in that category.

Tina Ubl has been enjoying a very successful freshman season at NAIA Clarke College. Through 18 games, Tina is averaging 14.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. She currently is in the top 10 in the Heart of America Conference in the following statistical categories: points per game, rebounds per game, blocks per games, steals per game, field goal percentage, and double-doubles. For the week of January 9th, Tina was named the Heart of America Player of the Week.
