Boys Basketball Alumni Round-up: January 22nd

Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. Alumni Update

There’s no use in burying the lead this week as the Hauser brothers from Stevens Point put together a phenomenal week to lead Marquette to a pair of victories.

A week after scoring his 1,000th point and hitting a buzzer-beater, Sam had a career high 31 points and 8 rebounds in a 74-71 win over Georgetown. He scored the last 6 points for the Golden Eagles. Younger brother Joey had 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in the win. Sam then had 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists as Marquette beat Providence 79-68. Joey tallied 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. For the first time in Big East Conference history, a pair of brothers took home Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors in the same week; Same being named Player of the Week while Joey being named Freshman of the Week.

The Midwest Conference awarded its Player of the Week honors to a fellow in-state alumni from St. Norbert College. Connor Curtis of Green Bay Preble had 16 points and 9 rebounds in a 63-62 win over Lake Forest College. Teammates Joe Lemon (Brookfield Academy) had a double-double while Joe Ciracks (East Troy) had 13 points including the game-winning layup as time expired. Curtis then had 15 points in a 75-57 win over Ripon College to help St. Norbert remain unbeaten in Midwest Conference play. Connor shot 14-21 combined in the two victories en route to earning the Player of the Week honors.

In other Midwest Conference play, Tristan Shoup scored a combined 53 points in a pair of losses for Beloit College. Shoup, the league’s third leading scorer, and Fort Atkinson alumn, shot a combined 25 of 40 from the field.

Tyler Hero continues to progress and excel in his freshman season at Kentucky. The former Whitnall standout and three time all-state selection had a team high 20 points in an 82-80 win over Auburn. He scored 15 of those points in the second half and all in key moments for the Wildcats. Hero was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season for his stellar performance.

Fellow Whitnall teammate Kevion Taylor continues to dominate at Winona State as he poured in 25 points in an 80-66 loss to Minnesota-Crookston. He followed that up with 32 points and 8 rebounds in an 87-59 win over Bemidji State.

Elsewhere in the Northern Sun, Brandon Myer continued to be a nightmare for opposing defenses of Minnesota-Duluth. In an 80-77 win over Minnesota State-Mankato, the Superior High school grad had 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists as he shot 10 of 18 from the field. Myer followed that up with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists in a 93-63 win over Concordia-St. Paul. Freshman teammate Hunter Plamann of Xavier had a career high 31 points on 9 of 10 shooting from beyond the arc. Myer shot a combined 19 of 28 from the field as he was named the Northern Sun-North’s Player of the Week for the third time this season.

In other Division 2 action, Davis Larson of Sheboygan North poured in 24 points and 7 rebounds as Hillsdale won its fourth straight Great Midwest Conference game in a 93-82 win over tenth-ranked Findlay. Davis was named the Great Midwest Conference Player of the Week as he helped Hillsdale claim a share of first in the conference standings.

To keep with the theme of player of the week, the Missouri Valley Conference awarded Brady Ellingson that honor. The former Sussex Hamitlon standout, and Iowa transfer, was also named the MVC Newcomer of the Week. Brady had 15 points in a 69-52 win over Bradley. He then had a career high 25 points in a 74-63 victory over Missouri State. He shot 9 of 10 from the field and 7 of 8 from beyond the arc in the eleven point victory.

UW-Platteville continued winning in dramatic fashion in the WIAC this past week. In a 61-60 victory over UW-Stevens Point, Clay Gerds of Fort Atkinson, had a game-winning follow up dunk with two seconds left to seal the victory. Teammate Carter Voelker (Kiel) had a team high 22 points. Earlier in the week, Voelker had 22 points in an 81-62 win over UW-Eau Claire. Kyle Tuma (Valders) and Gerds combined for 31 points. Voelker was named the WIAC Player of the Week for his shooting performances.

UW-Oshkosh has a plethora of players that contribute to its first-place standing right now in the WIAC. Adam Fravert (Marshfield), Jack Flynn (Appleton West), Ben Boots (Kimberly), and Brett Wittchow (Laconia) just tend to get the headlines. Fravert had 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks as Oshkosh beat UW-Whiteater 82-75. Flynn, Boots, and Wittchow combined for 51 points. In a battle of WIAC undefeateds, the group combined for 58 points in a 72-66 win over UW-La Crosse. Brett Wittchow crossed the 1,000 point mark in his career in the victory.

Wittchow wasn’t the only WIAC athlete from the Badger State to cross the 1,000 point mark over the week. In the previously mentioned Whitewater loss to Oshkosh, Andre Brown scored 18 points en route to crossing the 1,000 point milestone for the Warhawks. The Kenosha Indian Trail alum then had 24 points in an 87-85 win over UW-River Falls. Brown hit a three pointer with 55 seconds left to put Whitewater up five, which proved to be the game-deciding shot.

The NACC is another conference just loaded with in-state talent highlighting each week.

Madison Edgewood College got a pair of victories to continue its recent winning ways this past week. Ben Seefeld of Arrowhead had a game high 25 points on 12 of 14 shooting as Edgewood defeated Dominican College 89-49. Jake Negus (Janesville Craig) and Avery Lyons (Notre Dame) combined for 37 points. The trio, plus Emil Radisevic (Brookfield Central) then combined for 56 points as Edgewood picked up its fourth straight win with a 75-53 win over IIT.

Luther High School’s Collin Kenendy continues to be a scoring threat night in and night out for Wisconsin Lutheran. He had 27 points and 8 rebounds in an 85-84 loss to Rockford University. Matty Farner (Muskego), Colin Biesterfeld (Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield Central) combined for 39 points. Kennedy then had 35 points and 8 rebounds in a 94-65 win over Dominican. Collin was named the NACC Player of the Week.

Concordia-Wisconsin won a pair of tight games this past week behind the play of a few in-state alumni. Jordan Johnson of Cedarburg had 20 points and 7 rebounds in a 65-64 win over Lakeland. Josh Hau (Slinger) added 17 points while Jake Jurss (Sheboygan Lutheran) knocked down the game-tying then winning free throws with under a minute to go. Jurss followed that up with 31 points in a 90-83 win over Rockford. Portage’s Taylor Krocker had a double-double for Rockford by tallying 19 points and 11 rebounds.
