Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. Another week of mother nature rearing her head and causing chaos for the high school basketball schedule in the state of Wisconsin. As for the college side of things, the wheel kept turning and with that comes many performance to highlight.

Jordan McCabe and Tyrese Haliburten last faced off on February 16th of last season as Haliburten’s Oshkosh North squad beat McCabe’s Kaukauna team 88-67. Last Wednesday the two squared off for the first time in Big 12 play as Tyrese and Iowa State beat McCabe and West Virginia 93-68. The matchup was the first start for Jordan at West Virginia.

Fellow Oshkosh North grad Blake Marquardt was huge in Lake Superior State’s 87-72 win over Saginaw Valley State. He had a game high 20 points while coming off the bench.

Lamonte Bearden is beginning to get back into the swing of things for Western Kentucky as he sat out most of the season due to an injury. In his first start since being back, the Germantown alum had a season high 22 points and 7 assists in a 96-88 overtime victory over UTSA. With 8 seconds left, Bearden hit a game-tying free throw to force the overtime period.

The weather not only knocked out many high school schedules around the state of Wisconsin, but many WIAC schools were forced to reschedule games due to the conditions. However, there were still a few games on the docket.

Ben Widdes scored a game high 26 points, while also hauling in 6 rebounds, as UW-Eau Claire beat UW-Whitewater 78-74. Widdes, a Rice lake grad, shot 11 of 15 from the field.

In a matchup between UW-River Falls and UW-Stout, which saw River Falls get a 96-73 win, Noah Hanson scored in double figures for River Falls. The freshman and Eau Claire North grad had 10 points in 12 minutes of play. Luke Geiger (Burlington) and Jon Ciriacks (East Troy) each had 16 points for Stout.

Chris Knight continues to impress in his sophomore season at Dartmouth. In a tight 60-58 loss to Brown University, the Madison Memorial grad, and 2016-17 WSN Defensive Award winner, had 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He followed that up with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and another 2 blocks in an 89-68 loss to Yale. Knight is currently fifth in the Ivy League in scoring (15.6 ppg), and fourth in both rebounds (7.7) and blocks (1.5) per game.

Mukwonago High School graduate Brandon Hau has been great through his freshman season for UW-Parkside. As Parkside beat Michigan tech 82-74, Hau recorded a career high 20 points on 6 of 8 shooting. Brandon was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-North Player of the Week.

Keshawn Justice is another freshman who scored a career high in points as Santa Clara beat Portland 69-63. Justice, who went to Madison East High School, had 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals in the victory.

The Midwest Conference once again showcased many in-state talent playing well for the respective teams.

Deryk Ruple scored a team high 14 points and Knox College fell to Illinois College 96-60. The Kenosha Indian Trail grad has now scored 10 or more points in three straight contests.

Ripon College may have lost to Lake Forest College 73-69, however Muskego grad Cal Schultz did all he could to will his team on. Cal had a season high 33 points and 7 rebounds in the tight loss. Schultz then add 17 points and 6 rebounds in an 84-73 win over Lawrence University. Cal crossed the 1,000 point milestone in the victory.

UMBC is looking to make another tournament appearance this season as they currently are second in the American East Conference. Joe Sherburne of Whitefish Bay is a key reason to that. In a 57-49 win over Stony Brook, Joe had 17 points and 11 rebounds to pull UMBC within one game of American East first place, Vermont.

The NACC slate of games pitted many in-state talent up against on another this past week. Marian University went 1-1 on the week. In an 80-72 loss to Rockford, Pewaukee’s Will Olewinski had a season and team high 12 points. Tristan Van Ess (Oostburg) and Tyrese Pinson (Racine Case) both had 11 points. Van Ess then had 25 points and 12 rebounds as Marian took down Edgewood 76-72. Ben Seefeld of Arrowhead had a team high 19 points and 12 rebounds for Edgewood.

Like Marian, Concordia-Wisconsin split a pair of games last week. First in an 85-68 loss to MSOE, Joey Zietlow (Oak Creek) had a career high 16 points. Teammate Jordan Johnson (Cedarburg) also had 16. MSOE was led in scoring by Bailey McDaniel (Kaukauna). Johnson then had 19 points and 11 rebounds as Concordia beat Lakeland 83-66. Lakeland was led by Pat McDonald (Port Washington) with 15 points.

Cody Schwartz played a huge role in UW-Green Bay’s 90-74 win over UW-Milwaukee last week. The De Pere grad tied a season high with 18 points as he shot 6 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Brandon Gilbeck has been a steady force defensively for the Western Illinois Leathernecks in his collegiate career. In a 74-70 loss to North Dakota, the River Valley High School alum had 13 points while adding 10 rebounds.
